Cost Of College Textbooks

College is expensive, this is a fact. The cost has begun to intrude on the quality of the students’ education. This is a conflict that many college pupils are now experiencing early on in college. The price of textbooks each semester has commenced to infringe on students’ grades. On top of having to pay thousands upon thousands of dollars for college tuition, students are also paying hefty prices for their textbooks. Some professors require specific textbooks for their course, but only refer to them a few times. This causes students to only use their books a handful of times. Not only are students discouraged to purchase their school books for these reasons, textbooks are also difficult to obtain and may not be available to purchase or rent;

College textbooks cost more than your average reading book. Unfortunately, individuals enrolled in college courses need specific textbooks because they are more detailed. In order to reach the target of obtaining a college degree, students will have to do extensive reading at some point in time throughout their college years. If students have anywhere from two to seven classes per semester, with a book for each class, the cost begins to add up quickly. The Daily Dot made a comment about textbooks saying that, “After high school graduation day, unless students are lucky enough to find low-cost, used, or free books for classes, they’re often forced to pay hefty prices,” (Clifton par. 7). Although there are various websites and locations to purchase textbooks, students may not be finding the best deal. Students are often forced to buy expensive book to meet the requirements of their course. The Daily Dot continued to expand on this subject stating, “According to a report from the Chicago Tribune, the College Board says that students at a four-year public college pay an annual average of $1,200 dollars on books and supplies alone,” (par. 7). The Daily Dot made a comment that said that “American students work hard enough to afford college—and they need a break,” (par. 1). Before coming to college, many students enter the workforce in high school to save for college and other expenses. From there, now college students, continue working to be able to pay for a number of costs, such as rent, phone bills, and groceries. Tyler Kingkade from the Huffington Post conducted a poll on college students that have jobs throughout the school year. Research showed that “Nearly 4 out of 5 college students are working part-time while studying for their degrees, averaging 19 hours a week, according to the survey, but just 18 percent pay their way through school.,” (par. 2). Due to these facts, 82% of students are unable to pay their way through their schooling. This is not because these individuals are lazy, but due to the price of their schooling. As stated before, college is expensive and by having the price of textbooks at sky high prices, students are not able to pay for everything needed. This factor may also lead to why people drop out of college. However, college may not be the first time students were required to pay for the use of textbooks.
