The great wonder car by Tata’s has stunned the entire world. Critics who often said that it was not possible to make a car at a price below $3000 were taken to a back sit when Ratan Tata the chairman of Tata Motors unveiled this car in New Delhi at a price of $2500. Since then it has been in lime light and has been making news in the auto sector throughout the world.
Much of India's low-cost production edge comes from cheap labor and a large part of the low-cost assembly in factories and plants is done through manual operations. However this situation is changing fast with companies wanting to increase productivity by automating their lines. Tata cut costs by minimizing components, particularly steel, and taking advantage of India’s low production costs. Because of its size, it requires less metal, has a smaller and lighter engine than other cars, smaller tube-less tyres and a basic interior. Tata divided the components into two types – proprietary designs and Tata Motors design. For proprietary design components, Tata went with established suppliers who then worked on the development from Indian technology centers hence saving further cost. The cost associated with employing engineers in international development centers was a costly affair which made Tata’s use local design capabilities.
For components and systems designed in-house, Tata Motors chose suppliers with strong process capabilities who could give valuable suggestions and improvements in the designs. Nearly everything has been sourced locally and the Nano boasts of greater than 95% of content sourced locally since day 1. Tata’s suppliers were an integral part of the design and development process. Tata not only worked on its own processes but also helped its vendors innovate. Instead of annual contracts, Tata went with long term volume contracts with its suppliers, driving down the costs even further. A three-shift operation and consolidated purchasing with suppliers allowed for a further reduction in costs.
Impact on 2 wheeler Industry
Nano is expected to change the automobile market in India. It would cater to a typical middle income Indian family of four who wants to avoid rain, wind and dust. Its freedom for four. Currently, the middle income family cannot afford a 4 wheeler and are forced to go for a two wheeler option. But things might change once Nano enters the market. Nano is far safer than two-wheelers where the fatality rate is double that of cars.
However, RLK’s competitors are downsizing and outsourcing R&D and exploiting on the cost advantages. If RLK decides to invest more money into R&D and should the new product stall on launch, they face the danger of becoming bankrupt.
New businesses will take longer to thrive with the United States falling economy. The faltering job market and the deepening slump in housing threaten to hurt consumer spending. Consumers are becoming more conscious of their spending and therefore using cash to pay for smaller necessary purchases. The cost of entertainment and other presumed luxuries may be pushed to the background by most families, when having to choose whether to pay for a bill or treat the family out. Thriving businesses will understand the need to provide a service or product at affordable prices.

The current trends in emerging markets have led companies to centralize production of imperative product parts. Although outsourcing may have been beneficial in the past, bring production “close to home,” allows companies to have more control over the production process. More control over the processes translates to more control over the product. Customers demand higher quality at a lower price, so companies have to do whatever is necessary to compete.

Starbucks has many business-level strategies, such as cost leadership strategy. Starbucks focused on increasing its profits and compete with other competitors (Starbucks,n.d). According to Starbucks (n.d), “a cost leadership business strategy focuses on gaining advantage by reducing its economic costs below all of its competitors. Although Starbucks targets product differentiation as their main business strategy, they have also implemented cost savings strategies in an effort to maximize profitability. An example of Starbucks cost saving strategy can be identified between 2007 and 2008 when their operational expenses increased by more than $125 million while sales for the same time period were beginning to dip. Internationalization advantage of Tata motors will help them in having better control over the manufacturing units as licensing option which are issues related to transfer of technology or technology theft. To expand in the U.S. market and open new stores, Aldi should continue to execute a Niche Cost Leader strategy with a bit of revision to its promotional activities. Aldi’s cost leadership orientation and low prices will enable them to gain a competitive advantage in the U.S. market, gain market share, and subsequently expand and open new locations.
Without a successful business strategy put in place the company would fail and be unable to compete with competitors. There would be on way of knowing what resources are required. No planning for the future of the business. If there are no targets set out to achieve there would be no way of measuring how successful the company has been.
The overall purpose of cost accounting is to advise top administration and the management team on the most suitable and cost effective methods and actions to employ based on cost, capability and efficiencies of a given product or service. It can be defined as the method where all the expenditures used during execution of business activities are gathered, categorized, examined and noted down (Horngren & Srikant, 2000). Once these numbers are gathered and recorded the information is used to determine a selling price and/or to identify possible investment opportunities. If asked what strategic planning is one could interpret it as simply a road map that can guide the organization in the right direction. It is very unlikely that an organization would know which direction to take without a sense of direction. Managers are faced every day with decisions that have a major impact on the direction the organization must take, therefore, strategic planning can play an important role in guiding managers in the right direction. In other words strategic planning is a tool that management can use to give them a sense of direction that will guide them in doing a better job and to ensure that all the members of the organization are working toward the same goals
