It is the reader and his or her interpretive community who attempts to impose a unified reading on a given text. Such readers may, and probably will, claim that the unity they find is in the text, but this claim is only a mask for the creative process actually going on. Even the most carefully designed text can not be unified; only the reader's attempted taming of it. Therefore, an attempt to use seams and shifts in the biblical text to discover its textual precursors is based on a fundamentally faulty assumption that one might recover a stage of the text that lacked such fractures (Carr 23-4).

In the book “The Art of Biblical Narrative” by Robert Alter, there is one chapter (Chapter 3) titled “Biblical Type-Scenes and the Uses of Convention” (Alter 47). Alter describes several different stories (but similar in some ways) in the Old Testament that can be difficult to interpret in today’s culture. Alter describes how reading any book (more specifically the Bible), requires use of conventions, which he describes as “… an elaborate set of tacit agreements between artist and audience about the ordering of the art work is at all times the enabling context in which the complex communication of art occurs” (Alter 47). In other words, an agreement of how the writing is done; it can be pretty complex as well. He states that there are stories in the Bible that have the same stories of narrative, but there are different characters, they often are told several times in the Bible. Alter uses several of examples, like how patriarch is driven by famine; or where someone is found and is invited to eat with them, or a betrothal (engagement) near a well/body

The Hebrew Bible, better known as the Old Testament, is a collection of tomes that form part of the Biblical canon. Many scholars around the world do not think that a single author wrote the books contained in the Hebrew Bible, but rather that it represents centuries of stories frequently compiled after the events they describe . The stories were created with visions for the future, in order to allow audiences insight into communities and beliefs that were common thought during their era. The stories responded to the issues and problems of their time, but also addressed contemporary climates. While the stories themselves may not be true, they convey truth without needing literal readings. For example, the creation stories in Genesis, portray God as creating the universe, and while this is considered as not ‘literally true’; the stories communicate theological truths about mankind’s relationship with God through the eyes of Hebrew writers .
Viewing a work of art is a multidimensional phenomenon. There is the primary act of looking, wherein one sees a combination of shapes and lines and can immediately identify it as a familiar object. For example, the red, rounded figure on the table in a given painting, whose circumference lessens towards its bottoms and which protrudes a thin, brown stem from its top, is fairly quickly identifiable to the viewer as an apple. However, there is a level of looking at art that is secondary to this, which was notably commented on by German art historian Erwin Panofsky. Artists use certain visual motifs that refer to a theme or concept -- which Panofsky refers to as an image. The study of these images, alone and in collection, is what the historian uses to define iconographic analysis or, in more simple terms, iconography. By understanding the ideas that are denoted by the imagery in art, the viewer is better able to understand the meaning of the artwork itself.

One must hone in their vernacular skills in order to participate in discussion as well as accurately describe the landscapes they are witnessing. Throughout his essay Lewis make the importance of vocabulary abundantly clear. Lewis’ belief I that without the ability to recognize patterns one cannot adequately discuss on any subject let alone a subject a complicated a human landscape. To be able to recognize similarities and differences and identify design motif a student should first cultivate the vocabulary necessary to do so.
For centuries now Christians have claimed to possess the special revelation of an omnipotent, loving Deity who is sovereign over all of His creation. This special revelation is in written form and is what has come to be known as The Bible which consists of two books. The first book is the Hebrew Scriptures, written by prophets in a time that was before Christ, and the second book is the New Testament, which was written by Apostles and disciples of the risen Lord after His ascension. It is well documented that Christians in the context of the early first century were used to viewing a set of writings as being not only authoritative, but divinely inspired. The fact that there were certain books out in the public that were written by followers of Jesus and recognized as being just as authoritative as the Hebrew Scriptures was never under debate. The disagreement between some groups of Christians and Gnostics centered on which exact group of books were divinely inspired and which were not. The debate also took place over the way we can know for sure what God would have us include in a book of divinely inspired writings. This ultimately led to the formation of the Biblical canon in the next centuries. A formal analysis of these works of art gives an understanding of the role each of these elements plays in delivering Giotto’s intended theme. A formal analysis of an art entails an examination of its element and the principle of design. The elements are the building block that an artist uses to create a piece of art. These include aspects such as line, space, shape and form, texture and colour.
Answering these questions is the purpose of this essay. I begin by arguing that the Bible cannot be adequately understood independent of its historical context. I concede later that historical context alone however is insufficient, for the Bible is a living-breathing document as relevant to us today as it was the day it was scribed. I conclude we need both testimonies of God at work to fully appreciate how the Bible speaks to us.
