Social media is something that has been around ever since the 1970s. It all started when the telegraph was invented. The telegraph allowed people to send messages anywhere across the country faster than it could be delivered by hand. Giving people the opportunity to deliver news, messages, and stay connected. Throughout the year’s social media has evolved significantly, and now it’s something that it’s used every day by 78% of people that live in the United States (1). I am a user of social media, and throughout the years I have experienced many bad times while using it. Everything from bullying, frauds, and harassment. This are some of the reasons why I strongly agree that social media is harmful and should be restricted to those who aren’t ready to use it.
It all starts with Facebook, Facebook is the place where people go to socialize with others around the world. Many adults and teenagers join it so that they can make friends and interact with other in a way that they feel comfortable. Many of this user do not

Yes, there might be some misleading information, but they are more helpful information that is true than fake information. For example, when it comes to medical research and patients searching up personal symptoms social media is a quick and very helpful place to acquire this information. According to the article “A New Dimension of Health Care” an article on how social media has benefit the health communication system by Moorhead SA, Hazlett DE, Harrison L, Carroll JK, and Irwin A, Hoving C “Social media brings a new dimension to health care as it offers a medium to be used by the public, patients, and health professionals to communicate about health issues with the possibility of potentially improving health outcomes” (7). Social media is a place where anyone can go and find someone who to talk to and express their feelings and not be shy about
In the last few years social media and technological tools have become a significant part of communication and their popularity has expended to the all areas of our life. The youngest generation of "always on," those who are always connected, post, like, comment, and provide information about every aspect of their life (Imaging the Internet, 2012). This phenomenon, has expanded also into professional lives, business, and health care environments (Randolph, 2012). Undoubtedly social networking like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest or many different blogs are an indispensable part of our reality, however as the most popular modern communication tools are also not free from abuses and carry some ethical issues. A proper use of social
The growth of the social media has blurred the distinction between public and private and personal and work life. It is becoming specifically a challenge for teachers whose comments and photos can enrage students and parents. The social media is no longer private for teachers because their posts are scrutinized by not only the administrators but also by the parents and the media. There are an increasing number of cases where teachers have been fired from their jobs because of the social media posts. As indicated in one of the class readings, a Florida teacher Jerry Buell was fired by the school board by posting comments in opposition to the legalization of gay marriage in New York. In another case, a New York City teacher Christine Rubino was
“Social media, a web-based and mobile technology, has turned communication into a social dialogue, and dominates the younger generation and their culture. As of 2010, Generation Y now outnumbers Baby Boomers, and 96% of Gen Y has joined a social network” (Qualman 1). Social media now accounts for the number one use of the Internet, and this percentage is rising bigger every day (Qualman). As a consequence, people are becoming more reliant on social media, which has a led to a number of advantageous as well as unfavorable effects. The world is more connected today than it has ever been in the past, and this is all because of growth in technology. What has yet to be determined though
Social media is so popular that according to a recent article published by forbes.com, “72% of American adults are currently using social media sites; that figure has gone up 800% in just 8 years”(Olenski). Social networking was originally created to simply reconnect people with old high school pals, but in recent years it has evolved into a completely different operation. When social media first originated it was also intended for adult usage, which has in recent years expanded into the usage of all ages. Social media can create a negative affect on lives because it has been proven to be a dangerous addiction, for it takes away interpersonal relationships that are essential in life, and it has been proven to prevent people from being productive in life.
These four features – profiles, photos, friends and news feed - differentiate Facebook from other types of computer-mediated communication. Many young people join SNS to maintain connections with their friends. While viewing profiles, they are given links to their friends’ friends and so they can spend hours surfing the network, clicking from ‘Friend’ to ‘Friend’. By looking at others’ profiles, young people often get a sense of what types of presentations are socially appropriate; others’ profiles provide critical cues about what to present on their own profile. (Boyd D., 2008) Many young people also manipulate the profiles to express themselves with the choice of pictures and the answers to questions.

Social media has been growing at an explosive rate over the last decade. Within just the last five years, social media has gained more than 1.3 billion users, which is an 88% rise since 2012 (Kemp). According to Merriam-Webster, social media is defined as forms of electronic communication through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content (Social Media), the most popular including Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, and Snapchat. Social media has allowed for news distribution, traffic message delivery, increased teen awareness, increased marketing exposure, and global natural disaster relief support (Agrawal). However, with all things good, there is always some bad, such as a decrease in physical socialization, lack of actual productivity, higher expectations of how things should be, loss of privacy (Benson), and the worst off all, manipulation of the masses.
In our day to day lives we socialize and interact with many different types of people, including family, friends, colleagues, or even complete strangers. Before technology people stayed in contact via regular mail, writing letters, telephone calls and face to face communication. Today the way in which we relate to others is completely different. We use social media for finding romance, seeking employment, or getting advice. This is where social networking and social media come into play. Many people may think that the use of social media is making them more social and more interactive with society. But others question if that is really the case. Is social media making us more or less social? Is it changing the way we interact with people on a daily basis? Is it having a more positive or negative impact on society?
In today’s society there is a lot of controversy about how blogs and news are getting passed around there are no more newspapers being purchased at coffee shops, or delivered to your house. This has been caused by the increase in technology and smartphones taking over the lives of millions of us Americans. People are realizing that political blogs, Twitter, and YouTube are posing a threat to regular journalism. These forms of media are going to ruin the way people see most things on the news and it could be fake. Due to the rise in blogs and social media it will make people become more susceptible to news that’s not real.
In this day and age, many individuals simply cannot go without some sort of socialization. Specifically speaking, most participate in online social networking sites. The most popular and used one is commonly known as Facebook. Facebook was created in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg. By 2007, Facebook had over 21 million users, adding up to 1.6 billion page views every single day. The typical user spends over twenty minutes per day on Facebook and two thirds of the users log in every day at least once. It is not questionable as to why many people have a Facebook account. Facebook is generally efficient, easy for socialization, and not difficult to manage. Most organizations are affiliated with Facebook, as “almost 22,000 organizations had Facebook directories,” as of November 2006. A year after that in 2007, Facebook was named the seventh most popular website (Ellison 1). However, with anything well known, many oppose to using Facebook and hold criticism against the popular network. There are many flaws in the website and the relationships it starts online. Facebook is risking dangerous activities, ignoring privacy laws, and demeaning healthy socialization.
Social media has caused a substantial decrease in face-to-face time, stopped people from working effectively, and has caused an increase in bullying. Social media as defined by dictionary.com is “websites and other online means of communication that are used by large groups of people to share information and to develop social and professional contacts”. People use social media for networking, education, and entertainment. Some of today’s most popular social media sites include Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, Vine, YouTube, and LinkedIn. Facebook is used as a basic social media site.
Our society today has become dependent on social media to entertain, excite, and inform each other on the newest and latest hot topics of today’s world. Some people cannot go as long as an hour without checking their social media websites whether it is on the phone, computer, Ipad, or any other electronic devise with internet. The creators of social media have made it easier to recognize and draw the user in with notifying pop-ups every time something new happens in the cyber world. The easier it gets, the more addicting it makes it to check every second. Also, it’s not only the youth and teenagers using these social media cites; it also claims adults as well. One of the main reasons people make social media accounts is because people are nosey about other people’s lives. They get a social media page such as Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram to monitor people and see what they are missing out of in the world. People post pictures to their “page” for everyone to see how good they look or how funny they are. Since everyone has a social media account, others feel obligated to make one, two, or even three accounts. What used to be rare is now typical for a normal person to have at l...
Think of a time when people didn’t have technology and how they had to interact, whether it had been from writing letters to using telegraphs, communicating with people was hard to come by back then. Of course times have changed and now technology has made it easier over the years, social media has become an essential part of our life whether it be on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and many other websites. Now days everybody is using it whether its companies using media to promote its products or even teachers to tweet out what last night’s homework was. Social media is a great tool that helps us connect with the world and communicate our ideas. Yet there are some people who believe that social media has a negative impact towards our society as they believe that people can get addicted to it, it causes them to get easily distracted, and many other dangers. Even though people have different opinions on whether social media has a positive or negative impact on society, it can be said that social media has a positive effect on society as a whole because it lets people communicate with each other easily, it has been said to improve education among children, and has helped improve the economy in the world.
There are about one and a half billion users of social media worldwide. It can be used to meet new people, find old friends, chat the day away, join interest groups, or even to share pictures. Social networks were mostly created so people could meet and find new friends. What most users of social media don't know, are the dangers of using social media. One example is when you meet a person online, because they are not always who they say they are. If someone is not who you may think they are, who could they be? They can be a stalker or a person that wants to steal your identity; which could be done easily thanks to new developments of new technology. Also thanks to new technology it is now easier for people using your information to track you. Posting personal information can risk your family and friends lives. Social media can be used as a weapon against you. It can even lead to a kidnapping, or even someone's death. Many people use social media to help to waste time, but could also become an unhealthy addiction. Also social media can damage your future. When you are a teen you tend to post pretty much anything you want. This is dangerous because you can post too much personal information. What most teens don't realize is that what they do on social media now can affect them for the rest of their life. It can even come back to haunt you in the future. Social media is dangerous because it makes it easier to be stalked, identity theft to happen, kidnappings and murders, and also can ruin your future.
