1. Contextual factors are things that either promote development or do not promote good development. Risk factors are objects that have the potential to cause bad development on the child. Julian only participates in individual play not cooperative or parallel play like most children his age does. This could lead later on as he gets older to not have developed social skill needed to talk and interact with other children. His mother is recently separated from his stepfather and it is taking a toll on Julian. Julian could have a hard time trusting others and building strong relationships as it seems to be happening in his classroom. Julian has a teacher who cares very much about his social development. She made time each day to sit by him at the very least once and asked questions or made comment trying to engage him in thoughtful conversation. This promotes Julian to be able to converse well with others, and engage in talk or even play in the future. Even though his mom and stepfather are separated, his mom takes the care of him the best that she can. She makes sure he as somewhere to go when she is at work, fed, a place to sleep, and someone that cares for him. This gives him a sense of love and belongingness, also a good relationship with his mother. Julian has great manners, and engages in conversation with him mom and guests also helps clean up after dinner and gets his clothes ready to go to the laundromat. Permissive parenting style is when parents appear to care about their children, but the relinquish important decisions to children. Julian’s mother shows this type of parenting style because of what notes Ms. Olufson took when she went to visit the home. Julian uses proper manners at the dinner table, and engaged in conversation with her and his mother. Also once dinner was done, he helped clean up and got his clothes together for him mom so she could take them to the laundromat. Julian does not go to bed when his grandmother goes to bed but instead stays up until 10:00 p.m. each night. At school, he is somewhat aggressive with the other children, such as knocking down their blocks, and hitting them when they try to take one of his. Children who are in the Early Childhood stage need the guidance from parents and some sort of structure not only just love. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is a pyramid with different levels of which have different ideas that people need to complete before they can advance to the next level. Julian’s physiological needs are met, and so is safety and security. The problem is in the belongingness and love needs. He does get love but not probably as much as he use to before the divorce between his mother and stepfather. His mother does not have as much time since she has to work but also is trying to get through it too. Julian is probably feeling like he does not belong anywhere since the separation because his life was altered too and he lost a good
