1. Contextual factors are things that either promote development or do not promote good development. Risk factors are objects that have the potential to cause bad development on the child. Julian only participates in individual play not cooperative or parallel play like most children his age does. This could lead later on as he gets older to not have developed social skill needed to talk and interact with other children. His mother is recently separated from his stepfather and it is taking a toll on Julian. Julian could have a hard time trusting others and building strong relationships as it seems to be happening in his classroom. Julian has a teacher who cares very much about his social development. She made time each day to sit by him at the very least once and asked questions or made comment trying to engage him in thoughtful conversation. This promotes Julian to be able to converse well with others, and engage in talk or even play in the future. Even though his mom and stepfather are separated, his mom takes the care of him the best that she can. She makes sure he as somewhere to go when she is at work, fed, a place to sleep, and someone that cares for him. This gives him a sense of love and belongingness, also a good relationship with his mother. Julian has great manners, and engages in conversation with him mom and guests also helps clean up after dinner and gets his clothes ready to go to the laundromat. Permissive parenting style is when parents appear to care about their children, but the relinquish important decisions to children. Julian’s mother shows this type of parenting style because of what notes Ms. Olufson took when she went to visit the home. Julian uses proper manners at the dinner table, and engaged in conversation with her and his mother. Also once dinner was done, he helped clean up and got his clothes together for him mom so she could take them to the laundromat. Julian does not go to bed when his grandmother goes to bed but instead stays up until 10:00 p.m. each night. At school, he is somewhat aggressive with the other children, such as knocking down their blocks, and hitting them when they try to take one of his. Children who are in the Early Childhood stage need the guidance from parents and some sort of structure not only just love. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is a pyramid with different levels of which have different ideas that people need to complete before they can advance to the next level. Julian’s physiological needs are met, and so is safety and security. The problem is in the belongingness and love needs. He does get love but not probably as much as he use to before the divorce between his mother and stepfather. Even tough, Julian and his moms’ views were completely different they still were a like in some way. For example, both Julian and his mom cared much about their appearance. The movie begins with the family and parenting styles concept of child development by introducing the audience to the main character James and his parents. James lives in a two-parent household with his authoritative parents who are providing him with warmth, love, and encouragement (Levine & Munsch, pp. 521-522). This concept of parenting styles is shown as the movie begins and James is seen spending time with his parents. Then suddenly, James’ world changes and he is abandoned as a result of his parents being killed. This causes James to become orphaned and forced to live with his authoritarian aunts, Spiker and Sponge. Aunt Spiker and Aunt Sponge are very controlling towards James and expect him to obey their rules without allowing him to express his feelings. This authoritarian behavior is seen throughout the movie. Aunt Spiker and Aunt Sponge are also uninvolved, neglectful, and abusive, using verbal and physical punishment on James when they feel it’s necessary, which is also seen throughout the movie (Levine & Munsch, p. 522). In permissive parenting, the guardians are more of the child’s friends and not a disciplinary figure. Permissive parenting embraces avoiding confrontation and being lenient as the key to success. Imagine a trip to the grocery store. You are walking down the cereal isle and you approach a child screaming because he wants his favorite marshmallow filled cereal, rather than a healthier choice. Fulfilling the child’s want in order to appease the child, rather than being assertive and making a healthier choice is a perfect example. A second contrast of permissive parenting is expectations of education. We saw that in authoritarian parenting an A plus grade is expected. The dissimilarity between parenting techniques would be that a B minus would bring praise in permissive household. This is similar to how I was raised. As a child, my siblings and I were expected to achieve good grades but that did not translate into an A plus on every exam. Our academic achievements were to be considered excellent and praiseworthy even if we brought home a B on a test. In hindsight, if we were to earn a C in a class we could expect some sort of restriction and forced remedial training in that area. This parenting style is very undemanding but also very responsive. Permissive parents tend to shower their children with love and affection and involve themselves in their lives. Human development has been a subject of interest since ancient Greece and Rome. Different approaches derive from two basic directions: the nativists` and empiricists` ones. Telling your child's hobbies, pets, as well as learning difficulties and strengths will provide for a more intimate school year (Spencer, 2001). One of the ways in which parents play a critical role in their children?s social development is by encouraging their interactions with other youth (Updegraff, 2001). If children are able to work in group settings, this will not only help the child get along with other students, but it will also lessen the amount of disruptions in class thereby making it easier for the teacher to teach (Barbour, 1997). Parents need to stress the importance of little things your child can do to smooth the teacher?s day and help himself learn, such as listening when classmates answer questions, writing his name on assignments, and keeping his desk and work area tidy (Spencer, 2001). Parents can help your children avoid interrupting. Teachers love enthusiasm but yelling out too often will cause unneeded disruptions. Explain the good times to speak, such as when the teacher is inviting questions and the not so good times, such as when the teacher is talking to another student or giving directions (Spencer, 2001). Practicing these classroom manners will help with less disruptions and a better teaching and learning environment. Parental involvement promotes emotional growth of a child. The attachment between a child and parent is a long-lasting, emotional, learned response. It is the attachment in a parent and child relationship that forms the basis for a child to trust or not to trust their environment (Gestwicki, 2000). This proper attachment is essential for a child to trust other adults, such as their teachers and also to trust other students and make friends.
As I personally take the time to have a reflection over the course of “Child and Adolescent Development” I find myself intrigued with the amount of knowledge I gained during this course this semester. I wanted to take the time to concentrate on three specific areas in which I felt I had the most growth, but also came as a challenge to me as well. It is important when reflecting over a course that I look at what I found to be challenging, as this was an opportunity of growth for me individually. In this paper I will review some of the main topics that I found to be interesting but also resourceful for my future aspiration not only as a family life educator but also a mother one day.
