Advertisers all have one goal in common, that is an ad that is catching to a consumer’s attention. In today’s fast paced society there are so many selling products and charities. As I exam the advertisement for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty for Animals (ASPCA), I will show how they use the pathos, ethos, and logos – also known as Aristotle’s Theory of Persuasion.
In their advertisements, the St. Jude Children’s Hopsital Research Foundation packs their thirty second commercials with as many rhetorical appeals as possible. The purpose of these celebrity-endorsed commercials is to encourage viewers to donate to the foundation, and the producers have creatively inserted various rhetorical appeals in hopes to sway viewers to open their wallets. By using an immense amount of rhetorical appeal; including ethos, pathos, logos, and kairos, the St. Jude Children’s Hospital Research Foundation has successfully created an informative and heartfelt commercial that has inspired many to donate to medical research for children.
This advertisement features Pathos, because the little boy in the advertisement will probably make people feel guilty, because they spend a lot of money on unnecessary things and waste it, but this child says “Don’t I deserve a happy life?”, and this will probably make people from our society want to spend money to support this cause. This advertisement also features patriotism, because it suggests that purchasing this product will show the love, and support you have towards your country. This company makes people from America want to support this cause. It says in the advertisement,” Help stop child poverty in America”. This advertisement also features Transfer andWeasel Words because it uses positive words, and positive images to suggest that the product being sold is also positive.
Advertisements are one of many things that Americans cannot get away from. Every American sees an average of 3,000 advertisements a day; whether it’s on the television, radio, while surfing the internet, or while driving around town. Advertisements try to get consumers to buy their products by getting their attention. Most advertisements don’t have anything to do with the product itself. Every company has a different way of getting the public’s attention, but every advertisement has the same goal - to sell the product. Every advertisement tries to appeal to the audience by using ethos, pathos, and logos, while also focusing on who their audience is and the purpose of the ad. An example of this is a Charmin commercial where there is a bear who gets excited when he gets to use the toilet paper because it is so soft.

Social workers use theory in order to understand, as well as, introduce interventions and solutions to their client’s individual situation. It is important for students entering into the social work profession to have a base knowledge of theories, with basic understanding of their similarities and differences to appropriately apply theory in practice. In our society we are exposed to somewhere between five hundred and six hundred advertisements a day whether we consciously notice them or not. Since we are exposed to so many advertisements every day, companies have to get creative for us to pay attention to their advertisements. One advertisement that certainly caught my attention was one I saw online from the Lung Cancer Alliance of America. In the series of advertisements, called “No One Deserves to Die”, shows stereotypes such as hipsters, cat lovers, people with tattoos, and the genetically privileged, among others, with large print with the words “(stereotype) deserves to die.” On their website, the advertisement goes on to say, in smaller print, “If they have lung cancer.” According to the website of the Lung Cancer Alliance of America, the advertisement was meant to bring awareness to the public that many people do not do anything to cause their lung cancer and that it can happen to anyone. Although it caused uproar in the process, this advertisement was successful in achieving its goal: raising public awareness about the causes of lung cancer.
Parenting is exhausting and frustrating. Most parents re just trying to make it to the end of the day. In many homes, expediency takes precedence over consistency. You may get very frustrated that your child won't clean her room, but after asking her multiple times, you get fed up and do it yourself. We are all human and will make mistakes, but making an effort to be consistent is essential to raising confident, secure children. Choosing expediency over consistency has an effect on your child’s behavior and character. Being consistent is time-consuming and requires thought and patience, but it is an investment in your child's development and will make your relationship stronger as your child grows.
