The relationship between conscientiousness, openness to experience, and right-wing authoritarianism Hypothesis Hypothesis One There will be a significant, positive relationship between mean conscientiousness and mean right-wing authoritarianism scores. Hypothesis Two There will be a significant, negative relationship between mean openness and mean right-wing authoritarianism scores. Results A Pearson correlation test was conducted. The results show a significant, weak, positive relationship between conscientiousness and right-wing authoritarianism (r=.159, p<0.01). These results indicate that lower levels of openness are associated with higher right-wing authoritarianism scores. Discussion As expected, the results show that there …show more content…
This association has garnered several possible explanations from empirical research. Altemeyer (1981 as cited in Heaven & Bucci, 2001) suggested that parental treatment of a child plays a huge role in forming a prejudiced personality. That is, children who are treated harshly by their parents tend to rank higher in conscientiousness, and hence come to believe that the authorities are “always right.” These early forces are suggested to link to higher RWA levels in individuals later in life (Altemeyer, 1981 as cited in Heaven & Bucci, …show more content…
McCrae believed that openness is a major psychological determinant in developing political ideologies. Those who have high levels of openness tend to lean towards left-wing, liberal views, while those low on openness have an affinity to conservative, right-wing views (McCrae, 1996). Just as people who are open tend to seek novelty and variety in their experiences, those who are conservative prefer familiar and simple situations (McCrae, 1996). Due to this simplicity, conservatives tend to draw strict lines between what is right and wrong. They expect everybody to obey the rules set by authorities and will endorse punishments if these rules are broken (McCrae, 1996). Future studies could explore this further, looking at relationships between personality and political ideologies along a spectrum- not just
and Altemeyer’s approaches to authoritarianism share many similarities, such as the more descriptive approach to their work than explanatory route, where neither clearly identify the source of authoritarianism. (Jones, 2002. Cited in The Open University, 2015, p50)
When it comes to my political beliefs, I am indecisive between being a Republican or a Democrat. The reason for this, is because I never really showed enough interest into learning more about politics. As for my politically ideology, I feel that I am more liberal than I am conservative. In theory, ideology is defined in two ways, “(1) Organized set of political attitudes based on underlying principles”, and “(2) a cohesive set of beliefs that form a general philosophy about the role of government” (McAtee). An Individual’s political ideology can be formed from public opinions and agents of socializations (McAtee). According to the quiz I took on “Politopia.com”, the results showed that I was “Centerville”, which means that I am in between of being a Democrat or a Republican, or that I support both sides and yet oppose to both sides.
In the Political Compass quiz, it states that I am Authoritarian right. The members of Authoritarian right group are people who have a high degree of willingness to submit to authorities they perceive as established and legitimate. They support what is fair and justifiable. Besides that, the people who belong Authoritarian right group usually show a tendency toward authoritarian submission and conventionalism.

When Ezra was eight years old, he had a psychologist report done that asked a set of questions not only to him but also to myself about my parenting style. I scored high in the top 15 percentiles in not only warmth and affection but also discipline and control. Being high in all four aspects of parenting styles puts me into the authoritative style (Bee & Boyd, 2012). In The Developing Child, the authors describe the parents with this parenting style as those that are “setting clear limits, expecting and reinforcing socially mature behavior, and at the same time responding to the child’s individual needs (Bee & Boyd, 2012, p. 326).” As I reflect on certain situations, I can tell that this style guided my parenting. For example, when Ezra was 6 he frequently cheated at games if he knew he could get away with it. My response, with accordance to my authoritative parenting style, was to beginning teaching him right and wrong, not getting upset, but to bring up the cheating and tell him to play by the rules despite him not having a “strong sense of mortality (Manis, 2008).” I decided to use that option because I wanted Ezra to learn from the experience but continue to play the game and have

Before we ask ourselves why ideology has become such an important concept in the modern age, let’s first see how different authors in different times have defined ideology. I combined the most thoughtful and influential definitions that circulate within the social sciences in the postwar decades. All these definitions have revealed the extent to which ideology remains a very flexible conceptual tool. To some of the authors, ideology is dogmatic, while the others say it carries connotations of political experience. Others think its basis is of concrete interests of a social class while others say it is a characteristic of an absence of economic interests. In the book titled “The Authoritarian Personality”, ideology has been defined as an organization of attitudes, opinions and values. It is a way of thinking about people and their society with respect to the different areas of social life: economics, politics, minority groups, religion and so forth (Adorno, 1950). Loewenstein also defined ideology as a consistent integrated patterns of belief and thoughts that explains man’s

A psychological construct called the authoritarian personality believes that a person’s upbringing can result in intolerance as an adult. The rigid personality type dislikes people who are different. “A child with an authoritarian upbringing obeyed and then later treated others as he or she had been raised (Schaefer 39).
Numerous studies have been conducted on each factor and their subsets within the Five Factor Model; however, most studies have focused on extraversion, neuroticism, and their contributions to understanding an aspect of personality due to the ease in which each factor can be observed. The study of the Five Factor Model personality trait, conscientiousness, and its sub factors began to gain recognition as a meaningful and practical personality trait in the 1990s, and have been extensively studied and will continue to be studied throughout the twenty-first century. This paper examines how conscientiousness and its sub factors affect personality psychology based on scholarly literature and scientific research that thoroughly explains the role
