Nowadays, traveling abroad is encouraged. Universities are encouraging students to travel abroad for a few weeks to a semester to even for a whole school year. Here at Buena Vista University, they strongly encourage traveling. They offer many different chances to travel abroad throughout the year. Many people have learned the language of the country that they are traveling to so they will be able to understand what is being said. With this, English is becoming more commonly used, not just as a foreign language to learn, but for education, medicine, and even diplomacy reasons. In his essay, when he was talking about the United Arab Emirates, hitching also mentioned that Arabic is their language for school, religion, home, and culture, whereas learning English over there is “symbolic of modernity, work, higher education, commerce, economics, and science and technology” (271). This associates English with a more advanced outlook if one would want to get a higher education or find better work. English is getting a name for itself and it is not a bad name. People are not just learning it for a class, they are learning it for business, higher education, and many more reasons around the world. Education is widely spreading worldwide for people learning English. The reading of “Operation Mind Your Language” by Pallavi Polanki, he talked about the English language overseas in Afghanistan. The government in Afghanistan is working hard at trying to strengthen the English department at schools and colleges (290). It also talked about how the Afghan government is widely hiring English speakers to teach in the schools. English is becoming more widely used in Afghanistan as time goes on. Even though the English teachers can be at high risk at times, and some of the students are also at risk, it is still being taught. Polanki talks about how most of the teachers and students have chilling stories to tell if they are willing to talk about them. Polanki and Hitchings have the same concept in their essays. As a country, it feels as if the USA is too young to even begin to comprehend world culture. By studying abroad, it is my hope that I can begin expanding my understanding of the world. I also wish to learn about my home country in a new light. I await making new friends, and I expect that studying abroad will open my mind and deepen my longing to learn about other cultures. This experience is one that will lessen my narrow-minded cynicism.

The United States has the highest number of students who are coming to study abroad than any other countries. Each year, the number of international students coming to the United States to obtain degrees is increasing by thousands, and home countries of these students are primarily India, China and Korea, all located in the whole different continent. But what are the motives of students who are crossing the sea to study? Their goal of studying abroad is to experience diversity and to adapt attitudes and perspectives that are helpful in understanding a new culture. It may seem nice to go to a different continent, and hear and see new things; however, students find that achieving their goal is an oppressive process. Due to the distinct cultural differences between the continents, most international students face problems in communication, academic and financial pressure, and cultural adjustment while studying abroad.
In Taiwan, English not only was introduced as a new class for students since grade one, but it is also provided at cram school for one to be better at it. In addition, international schools were built for students who will be studying overseas. In the article, Studying Abroad: Competition for Taiwan Students, it mentioned that over 90 percent of the student who choose to study abroad came to the United State, and more than half of the 90 percent are in the ages between 23 to 28.The people who travelled are mostly attending to University/college, and some are for master and Ph.D programs. The unprecedented global spread English has experienced in the last years has paved the way for changes in the sociolinguistic profile of the language. In addition to the fact that new varieties have emerged, the number of functional domains in which English plays a role has increased significantly (Sharma, 2008). Currently, English is not only a tool serving national purposes, but also a language institutionalised in several former British and American colonies, and a lingua franca used worldwide. This phenomenon has raised concern about the classification of World Englishes, as well as, about the need to adapt English Language Teaching (ELT) to the new reality. Assuming Kachru’s Concentric Circles Model, this paper will argue that pedagogies based on English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) would be more consistent with the functions of English in Expanding-circle countries than native-centered teaching methods. With this objective, this essay will first give an overview of Kachru’s model, secondly, it will consider the implications ELF methodologies have for classroom practices, and, finally, the advantages and drawbacks of such a pedagogy will be evaluated.
