The United States has the highest number of students who are coming to study abroad than any other countries. Each year, the number of international students coming to the United States to obtain degrees is increasing by thousands, and home countries of these students are primarily India, China and Korea, all located in the whole different continent. But what are the motives of students who are crossing the sea to study? Their goal of studying abroad is to experience diversity and to adapt attitudes and perspectives that are helpful in understanding a new culture. It may seem nice to go to a different continent, and hear and see new things; however, students find that achieving their goal is an oppressive process. Due to the distinct cultural differences between the continents, most international students face problems in communication, academic and financial pressure, and cultural adjustment while studying abroad.

An average of 10% of students in universities all across the UK are international students from countries all over the world. (Accessibility Navigation, 2014). Although the experience is different for each individual student, there are many common problems that international students face. Those problems include: culture shock to varying degrees coupled with emotional issues(Bailey, 2005), Language barriers along with other communication problems (Sherry et al, 2009), and academic problems due to a change in school curriculum (Ramachandran, 2011). This essay will expand on the common problems faced by international students in the UK, offer solutions for handling the problems, and making the process of acclimating to a new environment easier for students.
In Taiwan, English not only was introduced as a new class for students since grade one, but it is also provided at cram school for one to be better at it. In the article, Studying Abroad: Competition for Taiwan Students, it mentioned that over 90 percent of the student who choose to study abroad came to the United State, and more than half of the 90 percent are in the ages between 23 to 28.The people who travelled are mostly attending to University/college, and some are for master and Ph.D programs. International students battle with several different obstacles in the process of moving to the United States to seek a better education. The number of international students studying in the United States, as of today, is 975,000 (Turner). Many international students have the desire to study in the land of opportunities for its quality of education, which allows them to obtain a respectable degree in their choice of major. Many of them come to America not knowing the English language very well, but still, challenge themselves because they are devoted to learning. College can be stressful, especially when you are being exposed to a new environment with people who speak a different language than your first language.
Oxford College and many other American institutions are culturally diverse. English is the formal language for American education system. At the same time, English is the lingua franca, hence widely spoken across the globe. Nevertheless, English has hundreds of dialects and thousands of accents which sometimes make communication between two English speakers ineffective. Non-native English-speaking students at Oxford College and many other American learning institutions have poor learning experience. This is due to the restrictive nature of English as the only language of instructions. However, as integral factors for provision of a better or a higher education, multilingual lessons, and a new pedagogy are required to fit the need for a continuously
The student living in the foreign countries have to adapt to the new country and its cultures. This ability to adapt to the new and very different environment is vital to their wellbeing during their stay as students. While this may seem like a daunting and difficult task, thee risks are worth taking. Exposure to a new culture and environment brings a closer bond among the concerned individuals. The foreign students get a chance to interact and know each other’s cultures (White, 361). This exposure to new cultures fosters bonding and friendship among the students that sometimes are long lasting. However, this is a dying trend because current trends suggest that the foreign students align themselves with students from the same community. They identify with those whom they share a similar culture and shut out the rest of the students body. These international students should not segregate themselves in this manner for several reasons; instead, they should mingle freely with the perceived “local” students.

Although the school policy of international student admission is enrolling students with TOEFL scores above forty, the majority of international students didn't provide TOEFL score when they attended school. When Nathan interviewed several international students, they said the way we talk to people is extremely different from their country. “For the international students I interviewed, American college culture is a world of engagement, choice, individualism, and independence, but it is also one of cross-cultural ignorance and self-delusion that cries out for remediation (Rebekah Nathan).” Most American’s are ignorant to other cultures, and international students in My Freshman Year confess to our ignorance. In universities, most international students admit to not having any help from their former professors. “American students answered and asked questions, even offered opinions, but the foreigners - half the class, most from China - sat in silence.” (New York Times) This information is completely accurate in my opinion, because if I was a foreigner I would keep my mouth shut in fear of appearing ignorant.
