The main causes of child abuse from a conflict theory perspective would be an imbalance of power relating to economic issues, legal or political actions that deny equal rights, a cultural issues that enable violence. The conflict perspective views society as groups engaged in a continuous power struggle for the control of scarce resources. From that perspective, child abuse may be a result of social inequality. In family groups, there is usually a pecking order and children are at the bottom of that pecking order and therefore the most likely to be abused. Children in society are powerless. They rank below their parents and are easily exploited by the parents who hold the power within a family group. This inequality in the family group could
increase the likelihood of child abuse within a family. The dominant parent may use abuse and violence to maintain their dominant position. Some of the effects of child abuse are a disruption in a child’s normal development, social withdrawal, and low self-esteem, sleep difficulties and in extreme cases the development of personality or mental disorders.
Child abuse is caused by a parent, for many reasons, and can lead to many kinds of problems for the child. Parents impose child abuse for many reasons such as psychological problems to low self esteem to alcohol or drug abuse.4 Child abuse happens for many different reasons but all the reasons are still child abuse, and are taken seriously. Child abuse can also occur when parents have too high of expectation of their kids which then leads to abuse. "Abusive parents may show disregard for the child's own needs, limited abilities, and feelings."5 Disregarding children's needs can include a neglect ion. Children need parental advice and for parents to fulfill all their needs.

Child abuse occurs in families of all different social classes and of all different cultures. According to the Heritage Foundation, abuse and neglect of American children has increased 134% since 1980 ("The Child Abuse Crisis”). No excuse for child abuse exists. Children are among the most defenseless group of people in society, and to harm those who are defenseless is simply unacceptable. Abusers may make excuses for their actions or even deny they are harming the child, but they are wrong. Child abuse causes significant damage to the victim’s physical and psychological health, the victim’s behavior and social skills, and society as a whole.
With the very high divorce rates in America, one could assume that this is a beneficial solution to marital conflict. However, according to Janie Sarrazin and Francine Cyr (2007) research shows that “24 to 33% of the families who go through a divorce continue to undergo significant conflicts lasting up to two years after the marital separation” (p.78). Despite issues, many parents decide to stay together, “for the children’s sake.” Some research has focused on comparing the effects of divorce with the effects of parental conflict on a child’s well being. As expected, results indicate that both divorce and marital conflict impact different areas of a child’s development. The intensity and area of development effected depends greatly on the quality of the marriage; For children exposed to high levels of conflict, the separation of parents is seen to have positive effects, whereas children in families with low levels of conflict, negative effects may be seen (Cyr, Sarrazin, 2007). Focusing specifically on marriage quality and its effects on children’s development, Paul Howes and Howard J. Markman (1989) examined the impacts of marital satisfaction, conflict and communication in both mothers and fathers pre-marriage and post the birth of a child. Relationship satisfaction, high levels of communication, low levels of conflict and the ability to handle negative affect can characterize high quality, or “good” marriages. High quality marriages are associated with the parents’ ability to handle negative emotions related to conflict, linking marital quality to the development and functioning of the child. We’ll start with child abuse victims and the affects and reasons of this abuse. There are four types of child abuse and I will list them in order from least to greatest, neglect, physical, sexual and emotional abuse. Neglect takes first with the NCVS having 54% reports of child neglect in 2007. Domestic abuse and child abuse have widespread social and emotional costs. Family violence affects all segments of the family. The impact of violence on childrens' lives appears to be far more substantial than the impact on adults lives(Family, Pg. 1). In most cases of family violence the family has conformed to a pattern in which the line of family violence started generations ago. This pattern must be broken before more children growup and live in a family that resorts to violence. But there are also children who live in loving families who do not resort to violence and as these children mature they start resorting to violence to help solve and deal with their problems. Studies show that physical punishment could cause aggression in children, but other studies show that even abusive parental violence does not always lead to an increase in children's aggression. Only by recognizing and addressing the multifactorial roots of violence in our society can we move closer to living in peace.

When we talk about the conflict theory perspective, this refers to power and social inequality as the major cause of societal problems. The elite people of the world use power to obtain privileges and to protect themselves by using the very criminal justice system that is meant to protect everyone. When someone commits a crime such as breaking into a person’s car and stealing valuables such as a computer, means they are breaking the law. The law is a written rule that tells people in a society what they can and cannot do and there to protect everyone and if broken people are punished.
The effects of child abuse are multiple. The pain and trauma the abused child goes through is just a small part of how this cauldron of hidden depravity in our society affects all of us. Wrecked lives can be seen in persons of all ages and in all walks of life. Society as a whole is also effected by child abuse both in negative and positive ways. According to the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) (n.d.), the causes of child abuse are 1) poverty, 2) less education, 3) unemployment, 4) changes in address, 5) marital problems, 6) lack of support, and 7) isolation. These factors are not only individual problems, but also social problems. Also, factors are considered to be interrelated to each other. For instance, parents in poverty are at higher risk of abused their children because they are more likely to struggle with economic problems because of unemployment. I honestly really only took into consideration physical and sexual abuse because those are the types of abuse you really can see and it’s a clear sign of what is going on.
