In the beginning of the semester, my ideas about child abuse and neglect were very plain and simple. I honestly really only took into consideration physical and sexual abuse because those are the types of abuse you really can see and it’s a clear sign of what is going on. I never really thought about all of the different types of abuse such as neglect, psychological, exploitation, verbal, abandonment, self-neglect, and fiduciary. People really need to become more educated on all the types of abuse for many reasons. First of all, they will know what they can all do to help prevent it from happening and they will know how to put an end to it. Also, they will be more aware of any red flags they may see and they will know what to do when they …show more content…
Another article I read over the semester was by Christine Hauser. The article was about four men who chose to rape a 9-year-old girl. To me, it is unbelievable how these men think it is acceptable to do that. That little girl is never going to forget what they did to her, she’s going to live with that her whole life. It is great how in this situation with the rape occurring, the community all came together and was all affected by what happened. Many people were mentioning how these four men should not even go to jail because the community wanted to punish them on their own. It helps to have a good support system, and with the whole community available to defend you really does make a difference. If only people stood up more than they do now, it could all reflect back on who we are and how we should treat …show more content…
In Denver, Colorado a couple had absolutely neglected to parent their children. With feces piled high, trash spread throughout the house, and communication occurring through grunts and gestures, these parents needed a reality check. Not all parents choose to take parenting classes, in their case, they were assigned to. I believe all parents should take one, because not everyone is prepared for children. When one of their sons needed to go to the doctors for a cut he got on his head, the doctors were surprised to see a bruise on his ear and he reeked the smell of cigarettes. A cop and human services worker were sent out to their house and discovered the horrible environment. I am glad that from taking this class I was able to learn more about mandated reporters and their duties. Before, I never knew that a doctor could be the one to see all of this happening and be the one to bring others attention to the
Saisan, MSW, Joanna, Segal, Jeanne, Ph.D., and Smith, Melinda, M.A.,. "Child Abuse & Neglect: Recognizing and Preventing Child Abuse." Helpguide.org: Understand, Prevent and Resolve Life's Challenges. N.p., n.d. Web. 7 Jan. 2014.
Child abuse in the United States is a growing epidemic. Every year the number of reported cases, and missing children go up. This is caused mostly by lack of education about the different types of child abuse, and the signs that go along with it. Communities need to provide more resources to better educate the public about the types of abuse, and the signs that go along with it. Child abuse and neglect can be lessened by more resources, more education and to reach out to others.
Child abuse and neglect is a very serious issue that can not be taken lightly. We need to provide continuing public education and professional training. Few people fail to report because they want children to suffer abuse and neglect. Likewise, few people make deliberately false reports. Most involve an honest desire to protect children coupled with confusion about what conditions are reportable. Educational efforts should emphasize the conditions that do not justify a report, as well as those that do.
In conclusion, Child abuse and neglect is more common in children’s lives today. A child may be harmed and be right in front of us and we do not even know it. We have to watch out for the signs and symptoms to try and help a child out. We may not even realize it till it is too late. The effect can appear in all aspects of life, rather it being psychological or behavioral. These effects can range from anything such as minor physical injury, not getting along with others, or become aggressive and affect them later on in life.
As reported in Child Maltreatment 2013, out of the estimated 905,000 victims of child abuse and neglect reported in the United States in 2013, 8.8% were victims of sexual abuse. 1 This means that in that year over 79,600 children were sexually abused in the United States. “There is general agreement among mental health and child protection professionals that child sexual abuse is not uncommon and is a serious problem in the United States.” 2
In American society today we fail to address several issues that need to be addressed. Unfortunately, child abuse is one of the major issues that our country is plagued with, yet we neglect to bring this to the attention of the entire nation. It is often over looked because everyone has a different view of what exactly defines child abuse. The International Child Abuse Network (ICAN) uses four basis categories to docunment the child abuse cases. They are: emotional abuse, neglect, physical abuse, and sexual abuse. I will be describing the first three.
In this second paragraph I will be talking about what abuse does to the children. Some may say that one type of exploitation is worse than others when it comes to adolescents. I feel as if no abuse should occur. After years of mistreatment children may have low self-esteem, the feeling that they have no way out, and may even try to commit suicide. It is very impo...
Since the beginning of time, children have be an integral part of our world. They act as the pillars of our society, knowing that the future of the world’s society will one day be in their hands. The rights of children have always been minute compared to the rights that adults have. For many centuries, people failed to recognize that children could fall victim to the abuse of an adults, just like adults can. During the 19th and 20th century, the fight again child labor was in the limelight, but rarely did people think that kids could be victims of physically or sexual abused. As time progressed, the criminal justice system began to identify that children needed to be protected from being a victim of physical and sexual abuse. Today, the court systems have distinctly identified what child abuse is and measure in place in an attempt to identify, prevent and treat abused children. Special teams are established for the sole purpose of investigating these crimes, because working with children demand a different protocol than adults. Interview children demands a special attention, because they are subjected to more trauma than an adult would, due to their developing mind.

The primary method was conducted using a series of distributed questionnaires to children for my research. The reasons why I used questionnaires are because I think I will obtain appropriate and honest responses which relates to their personal experiences. The data collected was then categorized by data into gender, age from age 8 to10, age 11 to 13, age 14 to16, age 17 to 19 and type of abuse. The surveys were equally distributed, a total of 13 surveys were handed out to children between 8-18 years of age that have been victims of child abuse/ neglect. The questionnaire consisted of 22 questions divided into five parts: multiple choice, background, open, rank order and attitude questions. The answers to most questions were suggested for consistency, and they could be ticked in boxes in a multiple choice format. This survey looked at two different groups of children, males and females. The aim of this research is to find out if child abuse has an effect on the intellectual and emotional development of the child and if it has effect on their adulthood.
Today child neglect is the largest part of child abuse in the United States, and almost two-thirds of all reported cases in child protective services is neglect (Dubowitz). Before the 1970’s child abuse mostly referred to physical abuse; however, now it encompasses physical, emotional, and sexual abuse as well as neglect (Compton’s). Physical abuse is when a child is hurt by getting hit, punched, kicked, or any other form of beating by an adult (Compton’s). This abuse will only harm the child physically and though it is horrific and can lead to long term effects it will normally only lead to violence. Emotional abuse is when an adult is hateful to the child by calling him names, and another form of emotional abuse is when an adult is punishing a child in a way that will cause him mental trauma (Compton’s). Emotional abuse is terrible for the child’s self-esteem however they can go and learn that they are important to the world by their contributions. Sexual abuse is when a child is touched inappropriately or molested (Compton’s). This is detrimental to a child but in most cases the child will block this out for when they grow older it is like it never happened which will cause no harm to their mental state. Neglect is when an adult will not seek medical help for their child and will not provide them with food, shelter, clothing, or emotional support (Sullivan). This is where the real trauma takes place on a child. The child will not suffer from being hit but they suffer from starving until someone is kind enough to feed them or they die from malnutrition. The child will not suffer from a parent calling them names but they might never know if their parent knows their name or cares to even speak to th...
Child abuse has become a chronic and common issue in the country today. In the United States of America, an estimated three million children are victims of abuse every year. Whether the abuse is physical, emotional, sexual, or neglect, the scars can be deep and can have a negative effect on a child’s education. According to academic research preformed at Brown University in April 1996, it was noted that abused children have a harder time maintaining good grades in school due to their stressful home lives, which leads to a lack of focus in the classroom. These issues are severely hurting the education of many children which damages their conscious development. Unstable households are the number one cause of children not performing at the level of proficiency in the classroom. (Family Mobility Helps) There are four different types of abuse, but the effects are similar, which is physical, or emotional harm placed upon the child. There are certain types of abuse that are often harder to identify. Neglect is the most common form of child abuse. Family members and caregivers are the abusers in most cases. Research has shown there are three major reasons why abuses children suffer academically. The reasons are withdrawal, poor communication/social skills, and behavioral problems. Child abuse does not only hurt a child’s education, but can lead to deaths. Therefore prevention is the key to the success of a child’s future. (Rynders)
Child abuse is one of the highest growing social problems in the United States. A social problem is, “a condition that a significant number of people believe to be a problem. A condition in which there is a sizable difference between the ideals of a society and its actual achievements” (Coleman et al. 2006:2). However, society has changed the way it views the issue, and is working towards finding a solution to this awful problem. Child abuse encompasses four main areas: physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, and neglect. Child abuse is considered a sociological phenomenon because it is a learned behavior. Learning the social patterns as to why people abuse will give a better understanding to its reasons, and also the development of society in the way that it views children. 3.6 million children were victims of abuse in the year 2006. Sixty four percent were victims of neglect, sixteen percent suffered from physical abuse, and eight percent were sexually abused. Also in 2006, 1,530 children died as a result of abuse; an average of four children everyday (Child Welfare Information Gateway 2008).
What is child abuse? Child abuse is when a parent or caregiver, whether through act or fault to act, causes harm, death, emotional harm or risk of serious harm to a child. There are many forms of child abuse, including neglect, physical abuse, sexual abuse, mistreatment and emotional abuse. Every year, more than 3 million reports of child abuse are made in the United States alone. Those are the only ones that are on record, but how many more cases are there that Child Protected Services aren’t aware of.
