The nursing profession is becoming an increasingly stressful occupation, with increasing rates of conflict, burnout and mental fatigue (Larahjeira, 2012). According to estimations, more than 20% of a manager's time is devoted to conflict management (Kaitelidou et al., 2012). If conflict exists in health care settings, it can damage long-term professional and interpersonal relationships, which results in having a negative impact on patient care and stress to the health workers due to gap in communication to transfer accurate information (Larahjeira, 2012). According to Giltinane stress is a natural human response to its environment. In fact, moderate levels of stress are considered essential motivations. However, high levels of stress have …show more content…
However Guidroz (2012) stated that some time nurses are working under pressure and stressful situation, which can lead to destructive interpersonal relationship with other colleagues, and they are so occupied in their work to reflect upon and to resolve it. As a result patient care will be compromised and organization would lose its productivity (Larahjeira, 2012). Kunic & Jackson (2013) also suggested that Conflict and stress is the root cause for any hazard in patient care, there are medications error, improper communication, lack of respect, delay care, cultural and religious values violation, which would have a direct impact on image of organization, as a result employee turnover and job dissatisfaction will be escalated (Kunic & Jackson, 2013). According to Smith et al. (2010), a cooperative activity among nursing staff members and leadership to present health care that is economical, impressive, and appreciated to all participants involved, including the patient. This cooperation must be established on an individual level, organizational level, and system wide level to succeed maximum prosperity (Smith et al., …show more content…

Nurses should foster collaborative planning to provide safe, high-quality, patient-centered health care. As nurses, we probably know the patients the best since we spend much more time with them than any other members of the care team. We are the liaison between the patient and the rest of the care team. We need to identify a potential problem or issue, and bring it to the attention of the whole care team. We should facilitate mutual trust, respect, shared decision-making, and open communication among all relevant persons in the care of the patients. With the collaborative support of the whole care team, the patients are in a much better position and are more likely to make an informed and deliberate decision. Besides, the collaboration among the care team can facilitate communication among the care providers, and provide a channel for the care providers to vent their stress caused by the ethical dilemmas that they encounter in work. The support from peers is very important for care providers to maintain their emotional and psychological
To attain this goal, nurses must work in collaboration with other members of the health care team. To improve efficiency, the health care environment must foster the development of collaborative relations among health care professionals. Trust, open communication, commitment, and shared goals must be present to support collaborative relations and effective teamwork. Health care organizations continue to place a greater demand on health care professionals while often working with limited resources. In a recent study focused on determining if there was a current or impending shortage of nurses in care settings throughout the United States, 81% of the 178 hospitals sampled indicated they have or are an... ...
1.Conflict Theory: Conflict theory is based off of ideas from Karl Marx (Tischler, 2014), and its focus is on the struggle between societal classes to obtain limited resources (Morris, 2015). They believe strongly that those whom are in power will use any means necessary to maintain it (Tischler, 2014), thus reinforcing the “have” and “have not” mentality (Morris, 2015). They act usually not out of benevolence, but with what will get them the furthest ahead, focusing little attention to constancy within society (Tischler, 2014). Functionalist: Functionalism is a macro-level theory (Morris, 2015), that is primarily based off of Durkheim and Spencer (Tischler, 2014). They believe that different groups within society exist in order for us to see

Nurses Joe and Sarah have been working in a medical surgical unit that has been experiencing a nursing shortage, which has led to an increase in the workload. Sarah has been feeling the physical effects of the stress and feels there is a lack of management support, while Joe experiences some feelings of being overwhelmed, but tries to use it as learning experiences. Joe has developed positive methods of coping, while Sarah is quickly heading towards burnout. Implications and Conclusions The information provided in the literature has great implications for practice in many units, including the writers. It is with great hopes that the research published can be presented to the committees on the unit in hopes that some of the workloads can be decreased to help with staffing and retention rates.
One of the most serious issues in nursing, that can affect a nurses career is nursing burn- out. According to the article “Where have all the nurses gone”, current nurses that are practicing, report high rates of job dissatisfaction (which is part of burn out) and 1 of 5 nurses may quit nursing in the next 5 years (Dworkin, 2002). Burnout is associated with nurses not coming in to work, not feeling satisfied when doing their job, high turnover rates and a lack of commitment to the work (Katisfaraki, 2013). If a nurse becomes burned- out, they may not take care of their patients as well and could make mistakes with medication administration. A study performed in the United States by Dr. Jeannie Cimiottti, shows that hospitals with high burn-out rates among nurses have higher levels UTI’s, and surgical infections (World, 2012). Nursing burnout not only affects the nurse, but it also affects the patient, the nurses’ colleagues, and the nurses’ family; nursing burn out often leads to emotional exhaustion and depression, that can effect relations and communication between the nurse effected and the person they are communicating with. This paper will cover what burn-out is, who is susceptible to burn out, and treatment and prevent nursing burn out.
Besides assertive communication, the nurse should take a collaborative approach to conflict management. Both strategies empower individuals to work together and accomplish goals successfully (Cherry & Jacob, 2011). Considering the healthcare community is composed of such a large and diverse population, a nurse must realize that conflicts will arise, but more importantly the nurse must effectively manage those conflicts. Having an understanding of the differences which exists between varied cultures, generations, and disciplines will guide the nurse in resolving conflicts. This foundation allows the nurse to better understand how people perceive and respond to others and the environment during a time which resolution is needed. Establishing trust with ones colleagues is another step toward resolving conflicts. Team members are much more likely to be open and motivated to come to a resolution when they trus...
Nurses are always exposed to situations or often interact with others where their values or belief might contradict with others. Conflict can often lead to distress and increases stress in the workplace environment, however if handled appropriately it can promote growth and understanding amongst the staff.
Nurses want to give complete and quality care, but are unable to, due to the constant needs of their workload and inadequate staffing. They have to prioritize their patients needs based on the most critical treatments first. Then whatever time is left, they fill in what treatments they can. Some reasons that nursing treatments are missed include: too few staff, time required for the nursing intervention, poor use of existing staff resources and ineffective delegation.” (Kalisch, 2006) Many nurses become emotionally stressed and unsatisfied with their jobs. (Halm et al., 2005; Kalisch,

(2015) implies that the unit manager together with work environment, greatly influences the nurse’s overall job satisfaction, and has little to do with the stress of caring for patients. Furthermore, studies show that stronger relationships amongst management, staff, patients and families, allows for bonding between each component of the healthcare pyramid and makes the job more “enjoyable”, thereby reducing the emotional fatigue associated with burnout. Research also states that changes in organizational policies such as nurse to patient ratio, short staffing, etc., reduce this risk (Australian Nursing Journal,
Collaboration is an effort of multiple members of a healthcare team to achieve a desired outcome. It is partitive that in healthcare the goal of the patient is centered around the patient needs. Here should be open dialogue and shared decision making amongst all members of the healthcare team and the patient (Davis, 2010). Professional boundaries are the intimate nature of nursing and often present challenges as nurse’s share problems and difficulties with patients that can be quite stressful (ANA, 2010). When the nurse finds that professional boundaries are becoming endangered the nurse should seek assistance from peers or supervisors or seek to remove themselves from the situation (Olin,
The lack of support, the lack of recognition and appreciation and fewer resources to be able to do their job correctly is frustrating and causing problems physically and mentally for the nurses and hindering patient care. The impact on nurses is very individualized to them so not one person can react the same or heal the same. Symptoms unfortunately caused discerning fatigue emotionally and physically, relationship struggles and burnt out nurse syndrome to the point of wanting to leave the profession (Mendes, 2014). The preventive measures must continue and be creative on ways to allow the nurse to distress. Extreme fatigue emotionally and physically can cause anger, tears for no reason, pain and a foggy memory (Peate, 2015). It also caused a negative reaction on personal relationships as wanting to be alone, divorces and just became uninterested in anything that came up. Although nurses are multi-taskers, they take the risk of patient safety every time the nurses reach the point of nurse burnt out or compassion fatigue. Burnt out and compassion fatigue can cause exhaustion, dissatisfaction and low capacity to even physical ailments such as crying easily, changes of personality, palpitations, breathing difficulties, high blood pressure, headache and
Conflict has been an issue for man since the dawn of civilization. In today’s fast paced world conflict, especially in the workplace, is a frequent occurrence. When that workplace is a health care environment where lives are at stake, emotions run high and collaboration with many different disciplines is required conflict often becomes a prevalent part of everyday life. Conflicts in the workplace can lead to reduced morale, lowered productivity resulting in decreased patient care and can cause large scale confrontations (Whitworth 2008). In the field of nursing whether a conflict is with a peer, supervisor, physician, or a patient and their family, conflict management is a necessary skill.
