A Confessional Poem
There are many ways to write a poem. Poets who write poems uses tone and rhythm to attract the reader’s attention. A poem is all about describing the emotions and feelings the author is feeling in stanzas. Once such poet is Theodore Roethke, who was born in an era when confessional poems were embrace by the readers. Confessional Poems are poems which the writers talk about their inner struggles they are facing and real life. They write about their daily struggles to cope with life and the outside world. One of his poem, My Papa’s Waltz, is about a drunkard father and his son, which is connected to his own personal life and by that he writes an entire poem which is relevant to his life.

The boy’s father is tired from his hard and extreme labor, so when he comes home from work he gets drunk to cool off. Roethke has wrote it like that they are waltzing, instead the father his beating the boy, while the mother is watching on the side. Relating to Theodore Roethke’s biography, although not directly mentioned in the poem, his father and uncle owned a twenty-five acre greenhouse which required extreme labor to maintain and run the place. As it was a confessional poem which is writing about yourself and the struggles in your everyday life. Also, about subjects that are considered taboo in the society back then, like depression, alcoholism, love, divorce, and other tragedies (Class Notes). In “My Papa’s Waltz”, Roethke writes a poetry about alcoholism and abuse, which is connected to him as he was also an alcoholic. Just like in the poem, the father in the poem and Roethke’s own father were both similar, as they both did extreme labor which made them exhausted.
