On May 16, 2014 I attended my very first concert. A jazz concert. I wasn't sure what the experience would be like, but to my surprise it was fantastic! I enjoyed it immensely. The part that I liked about it most was that I was able to support my wonderful school, professor, and a great ensemble. The event was at the college Mount San Jacinto in Menifee, California at 7:30 p.m. The ensemble is Menifee Jazz ensemble which consisted of outstanding instrument players. The instruments included were trumpets, trombones, saxophone, drums, congas, piano, bass, and guitar. Menifee Jazz Ensemble collectively performed 10 pieces, but the three that stood out and stuck to me the most prominently for different reasons that I'll explain why were "What is hip", "Baby Brown", and "I'll Take Les."
The first piece that really got me into the performance was "What is Hip." It was a great surprise of a jazz song. I'd usually listen to some tracks in jazz class or at home but none like this. I didn't know jazz could be groovy and funky. This is exactly what I thought of when I heard this piece. It started of with some cool riffs from the guitar and then the trumpet player, John Hess, had a solo and used a mute. It sounded incredible. There was another distinct moment and it was when all the members from the ensemble yelled out "huh!" in unison. Then the saxophone player, Kasey Cothran, started playing a solo and would switch off with the guitar player, C.J Lajeunesse, and then it would come back to the saxophone player. It was great to see that interaction between them and I could tell they were really into it because there was an amusing moment that I noticed, at the beginning, the saxophone player got carried away and forgot to share the spotli...

...nist also started slowly and builded up to really fast playing where it was a note right after the other and then died down to slow notes once again. Then the song continued on to the end with the same melody and rhythm from the beginning.
All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed the performance and I was very pleased to have attended. All the members in Menifee Jazz Ensemble are uberly talented and I felt proud for them because they did a fantastic job. This concert was an eye opener because I never really enjoyed listening to jazz as much as I did that night watching it being played live. I now have found a new respect for it. Thankfully for my class though, I was able to identify what instruments were being played and look out for special moments in the performances. I definitely now will be a fan of jazz and continue to listen and attend more concerts in the future.
