Concentric: Movement where the agonist muscle (prime mover/s) shorten or contract. Any action where the muscular tension results in the shortening of the muscle causing a rotation around the involved joint.
In strength training or resistance exercise, the concentric action is the “lifting” part of the exercise. In the apparatus I performed, the part where I pressed against the weight to move it upwards by extending my legs was the concentric part of the exercise.
Eccentric: motion of an active muscle while it is lengthening under load
In a Leg/Knee Extension exercise, the action of lowering the leg back down from the lift is the eccentric phase of that exercise. This leg must be lowered slowly rather than letting it drop to allow the leg muscles
