Sex. It is a natural human act that has been socially normalized outside of the context of marriage. However, many people are scolded, rejected, and shunned from their families if this act results in an unwanted pregnancy, sexually transmitted disease, or HIV. But what are we doing as a country to educate citizens properly about sexuality and intercourse? Research has shown that sex education has been proven to reduce STD, HIV, and teen pregnancy rates. Traditionally, the government has funded Abstinence- only sexual education for the children in America. While this has shown to be effective, we currently attain the title of the highest teen pregnancy rates in the world. Background on this type of education states that sexuality is healthy, and a normal part of life. It allow individuals to explore their own values and beliefs about sex. Surprisingly, comprehensive sex education does emphasize that abstinence from sexual intercourse is in fact the most effective and encouraged method of preventing sexually transmitted diseases, unwanted pregnancy, and HIV. This type of education covers a wide variety of sexuality related content including; culture and society, human development, sexual expression, sexual health, interpersonal skills, and relationships. Comprehensive sex education includes religious values and the important role that can play in making sexual decisions. The education curriculum also provides factual medical information about STDS, and how to avoid them. Comprehensive education include the education of types of birth control, including pills, diaphragms, intrauterine devices, and how condoms and their application is a way to significantly reduce sexually transmitted disease, and also an effective way to prevent unintended pregnancy. It allows for teens to ponder their morality with options that women have when an unintended pregnancy occurs such as the options to raise, give for adoption, or abort the baby. Lastly, comprehensive sex education provides factual information on abortion, sexual orientation, and masturbation.
