Target Corporation main competitors are Walmart and Sears. While Walmart is leading their industry of major retail chains, Target is not far behind as they are currently ranked second amongst the major retail chains. In order to maintain their growth and competitive advantage, Target needs to pay close attention to their competitor’s market share, product quality and unique selling proposition in comparison to their own. Target should be analyzing their competition using metrics that will allow them to use that information to set objectives, rate their own performance, and plan for future success for the organization.

Second is the importance that Target shows on being a leader in the industry when it comes to customer satisfaction and care. Superiority for Target is the need not only to offer quality products but to also to remain active in communities, take a stand on social concerns and topics such as gay marriage and transgender rights, even if it poses a financial and physical risk to the organization. For instance, in April of 2016, Target announced that any transgender guest can use the bathroom that corresponds with their gender identity. The aftermath of the statement and stance on the social issue resulted in a bombing of one of the company’s retail stores restrooms and guest boycotting the company. However even though there are risks, Target seems themselves as being above the norm and identifying and showing support for all.
