Comparison between a Discount Store and Department Store When you walk into a discount store such as Ross, you will notice rows and rows of clothing racks. If you look down you will see tile floors. Ross has several different sections. They have a men’s, sports ware, women’s, juniors, children’s, under garments, electronics, luggage, kitchen accessories, shoes, accessories, bed and bath, and seasonal. These sections are all scattered through out the store. When you walk into a section, you will notice the aisles are very close not allowing carts east access between them. If you are looking for a specific item be prepared to search for it. Since all their clothing is on rows of racks all the different types of brands and styles are all together, not allows a quick walk in grab what you want and leave type of deal. All of Ross’s registers are in the front of the store. So if you in the back of the store and ready to check out you must first walk to the front of the store. If you want to try something on before you purchase it you must walk to the back of the store where the fitting room and bathrooms are. Now if you compare Boscovs to Ross they have a lot of differences. When you walk into Boscovs you will see all the clothing nicely placed on clothing racks spaced fairly far apart. Their floors are half tile and half carpet. The walkways are tile but where their clothing is a nice comfortable carpet was placed down. They also have different departments which is similar to Ross. They offer a men’s, boy’s, women’s, children’s, juniors, petites, misses, formal, toys, electronics, furniture and appliances, fine china, candy, hunting and exercise, linen, bath, perfume, jewelry, cosmetics, shoes, accessories, and seasonal. All their different brands of clothing and styles are placed on different racks making easier for a quick grab what you want and leave. They are well organized and a nice layout for the store. They have fitting rooms and cash registers through out the store making it easy to purchase your items. You don’t have to walk very far before you find a register.
As I have outlined in the charts below, there are various similarities and differences between Wal-Mart and Target. Wal-Mart is Target’s primary competitor, and vice versa. Wal-Mart has a strong market presence in its global markets and has a diverse range of products and services that are affordable and available in stock. Target, on the other hand, does not have a strong market presence or efficient product supply; however, Target’s physical environment and innovative products further the brand’s image and value. Unfortunately, Target and Wal-Mart are both e-commerce laggards with major competitors such as Amazon. Determining product positioning requires the analysis of target customers, the market competition, the definition of competitive advantages, and the communications needed to deliver the chosen position to the consumer. Kohl’s is an example of a department store that has successfully deployed a pricing a retail strategy, which evaluates and incorporates price, place, product, and promotion.
Nordstrom’s retail positioning strategy provides it with the competitive edge it needs to differentiate it from competitors who also serve similar markets.
In this wholesale retail industry, the major key players are Costco, Sam’s Club, Walmart, and Target. Other e-commerce businesses like Amazon are also considered the rivals of Costco and other primarily brick-and-mortar businesses. The level of rivalry among existing players is high due to many reasons. First of all, it is easy for the customers to switch their memberships if they are unsatisfied with the company’s products or services. Since the annual fee of membership at Sam’s Club is ten dollars lower than that of Costco, Costco customers can switch their membership to Sam’s Club anytime they want. Over the years, the American department store has developed and evolved as not only a commercial business but also a cultural institution. While it has weathered many storms and changes since its inception and throughout history, its most predominant enemy has been a change in the lifestyle of the American people (Whitaker, 2013). As the customer’s needs and wants have shifted, department stores have struggled to keep up with demands. It has been argued that the decline of the department store has been ongoing for the last 50 years (Whitaker, 2013). This dissertation aims to understand how the department store has historically played a role in consumer culture and spending, and additionally, how this has evolved and changed in today’s retail market. Although department stores may not be able to take all the credit for inventing modern shopping, they certainly made its conventions and conveniences commonplace. They set a new standard for the way the consumer should expect to be treated, the type of services that should be provided, and the convenience that should attend the process of acquiring the necessities and niceties of life all in one place. They made shopping into a leisure pastime. This environment meant shopping was a means of freedom to look around, pick up objects with no obligations to buy. As one historian remarked, department stores: “encouraged a perception of the building as a public place, where consumption itself was almost incidental to the delights of a sheltered promenade in a densely crowded, middle-class urban space” (Whitaker, 2006). Although this perception and view of the department store has changed over the years, this paper aims to follow the trail of how and why that happened.
Wal-Mart as we know it today evolved from Sam Walton’s goals for great value and great customer service. Mr. Walton’s competitors thought his idea that a successful business could be built around offering lower prices and great service would never work. Mr. Walton also credited the rapid growth of Wal-Mart not just to the low costs that attracted his customers, but also to his associates. He relied on them to give customers the great shopping experience that would keep them coming back. Sam shared his vision for the company with associates in a way that was nearly unheard of in the industry. He made them partners in the success of the company, and firmly believed that this partnership was what made Walmart great.
