The popularity of blogs, twitter, and YouTube has grown throughout the years. These certain social websites have been able to let people converse with people all around the world with just a click with a button. For example, blogs have let people write their stories and share them with the world to either helps others that are having the same issues or just to get their experiences and writing out there in the world for someone to read. In the end blogging helps others communicate and connect with others in surrounding areas or with shared interest. Twitter has the same concept as blogging does. Although blogging doesn’t have a limited amount of words you can write, twitter does. With twitter you use a story that you have and or something you want to say and say the important facts within 140 characters. This allows bloggers and other people out in the world to share important things fast and easy. Twitter, just like blogging allows one to share information to others in common interest and or others around the world. YouTube on the other hand, is just like twitter and blogs except you can actually video yourself and or whatever it is you want to share with others. Technology today is more relied upon than ever before. If one needs to call someone half way around the world, simply take out a cell phone and dial their number. Within thirty seconds, one can be speaking to that person just as if two people were conversing face-to-face. I started reading blogs when I was taking a class on digital media. As part of the class I was introduced to Lankshear and Knobel‘s (2007) The New Literacies Sampler. Social media has become a major epidemic in today’s society. According to millions of people have signed up on social media websites, allowing their basic information to be shared with the world wide web. Two of the biggest social media websites today are Facebook and Twitter. The new generation tends to use Twitter over Facebook, the older generation prefer Facebook over Twitter. Though Facebook and Twitter serve the same purpose and have many similarities, they both differ in many ways.
Newspapers have been around since the early 18th century, gaining prominence after 1790 during the colonial era. Magazines followed right behind newspapers and gained popularity as well, television followed last, booming with popularity in the 1960’s. Television is still the most often used source for news and other information such as the weather. But new forms of mass media are on the rise, such as channels, blogs and podcasts, which have been around since the early 2000’s but are now picking up momentum and gaining prominence as a news source. Online journalism is a media with a mixture of internet, photographs, and videos. On the online articles, there are additional links for transparency, information that explain the articles and exchange different opinions on the internet (Humprecht and Esser 1). The problem of online journalism is that people cannot figure out if they are reading a real article or a tabloid. Katharine Viner, a Guardian writer, assets that people likely spread alternative facts without noticing. Also, she points out that news industries struggle to increase their profits. Technology advancement causes online stories to spread out and people overlook those fake facts without doubting. In order to solve this problem, online news must tell the truth (Humprecht and Frank 16), news industries need plans to maintain their position as news providers (Viner) and people need the skill to find which articles are true. People use social media for networking, education, and entertainment. Some of today’s popular social media sites include Facebook, twitter, pinterest, instagram, vine, YouTube, and LinkedIn. Facebook is used as a basic social media site. People can share pictures, videos, and “status updates” to let people know how they are doing or exciting things going on in that person’s life.
