Standing at the starting line of the race there are hundreds of other runners that surround me. As my eyes search the mass of people and I can clearly see how each one of these runners differ from the others. Some of the most distinguishable in the crowd are the Overly Dedicated, the Average Runner, and the #runner. All of these types help to create the great diversity of runners with their distinctive qualities and their imaginative views towards the running world. Starting with the most fanatical of the bunch the Overly Dedicated comes into play. These runners are clothed in every piece of equipment from high-tech electronic gear to the newest shock resistant footwear. These runners run just for fun or to pass the time between race days. They live for race days and it by far is their favorite day of the week the rest of their week they spend preparing for this day. They usually run about five miles every practice, but never more than ten which would put them into the Overly Dedicated´s zone. Weight training and carbo loading on the days leading up to race day is essential, but their intense desire to eat everything in their path usually ends up derailing their plan. These runners lose all ambition when having to anything by themselves because they are team players who need others to help them keep going and take many aspects of what the team does very seriously. Average Runners are commonly surrounded by others of their kind being that 90% of their friend group consists of other runners and most of them are on the same team or running group as they are. They consider the act of running to be one of their hobbies and only participate in the physical movement when they are in the right mood, either bored or extremely bored, or when they are at practice. Average Runners do not own much for gear besides their immense collection of race shirts. They are easily identifiable in the average social setting, they can usually be found wearing a pair of sweatpants, one of their numerous race shirts and a cheap set of brightly colored running shoes. All of which pairs perfectly with their trusty water

Race day will either be filled with one race of a few, very fast miles or a fraction of that in dead sprint. While a track athlete can always count on racing around the oval in track, and never lose sight of the finish line; cross country sees a course of winding hills and trails that can leave me wishing it were track season. Though it’s true that humans naturally desire patterns, structures and standards in their lives, the underlying intention for these patterns isn’t to provide shelter or refuge, but to rather provide a pathway to function and achieve various goals, moral or immoral.

The Commander is the one most fear, the one who calls the shots and who usually gets what he wants but that is also the case for Serena Joy, the Commander’s wife. Both Serena Joy and the Commander have control of what goes on in the lives of the Handmaids.
Communication is difficult when Donny is angry or wants to teach members the hard way. Being publicly humiliated for weights and performance is not useful to build team member’s confidence. Nowadays, there are so many new technology that can help improve the ability of runners and coaches. Life as a handmaid is described throughout the text with such vile descriptions, the idea of it alone would be hard to swallow, nonetheless living as one. At the end of the day it is government sanctioned oppression, where these women are stripped of all basic rights and freedoms and are reduced outlets that produce children . The handmaids are brainwashed and subjected to torture as a means of their indoctrination, justified by a false divine declaration to battle the falling fertility rates. The are given away to wealthy families, and this is where their handmaid duties began, reduced to servants and surrogates of the house. This is an onslaught of adversity many of us do not face, but even in the sense of the real world, unfortunately exists.

Going into the first race we had not expected much since Susan and I had never run this type of race. There were so many crucial things that we had to remember. It wasn't just to get out of the blocks and burn up the track; there was a baton involved, a certain amount of steps to take, and even a certain way to hold the baton.
