Jane Austen worried that she made, “a heroine whom no one but [her]self will much like” when in fact Emma became considered her masterpiece. While Jane Austen feared the worst for her novel, “she could hardly have been more mistaken. Not only is the novel usually seen as her masterpiece, but her heroine has won innumerable friends”. Sir Walter Scott wrote in 1816 that Jane Austen’s, “knowledge of the world, and the peculiar tact with which she presents characters that the reader cannot fail to recognize, reminds us something of the merits of the Flemish school of painting. Elton in the middle which Emma was at the higher end of the class. Emma was a fool to suggest a match between the two because Mr. Elton was looking for an advantageous marriage and Harriet could never provide him with that. Moreover, Mr. Elton and Harriet are not an ideal match because their personalities are too opposite. While some differences in a couple are good to challenge and balance each other, Harriet and Mr. Elton are two extremes and could never complement each other and be a happy couple. Harriet is silly, impressionable, and sweet and Mr. Elton is serious, ambitious, and determined. Churchill do not end up together because while they are too similar in their in class, personality, and not similar at all in their values; they do not balance each other out. Emma and Frank Churchill are very similar in age, beauty, wealth, personality, and marital status, and subsequently they were coupled by the town long before they ever met. (quote) Frank and Emma are imaginative, amiable, witty, playful, frivolous, and lighthearted. As Frank is comparable to the male version of Emma, so they would not have made a successful couple because they do not balance and ground each other. If anything the two make each other more playful and imaginative so they would never take anything in life seriously. In the novel, Emma, Austen introduced her audience to a new idea of patriarchy. While she is known to satirize society for the “faulty education of female children, limited expectations for girls and women, and the perils of the marriage market” (“Austen, Jane”). Austen expresses the irony of the men of her patriarchal society and proposes the ideal gentleman in Mr. Knightley. In Emma, Austen moves away from “a traditional idea of 'natural' male supremacy towards a 'modern' notion of gender equity” (Marsh). Jane Austen is a revolutionary in the way she transforms the idea of Nineteenth Century patriarchy by not “reinforcing the traditional gender stereotypes” (Rosenbury) but instead challenging the status quo. While her characters still hold some ties to traditional ideals, Austen proves to be ahead of her time, influencing the way gender is regarded today.
A total of ten characters are mentioned by name in the first chapter of Emma, though of these only three speak, the dialogue of each of the three serving to reinforce the description of each which is given in the narrative (Austen 362-67). Emma, the eponymous character, is introduced in the first sentence of the novel as being a young woman who is “handsome, clever, and rich,” a character who seemed to unite some of the best blessings of existence” (Austen 362). The story of Pride and Prejudice starts with a ball, this is the first time that Elizabeth and Jane met Mr. Darcy and Mr. Bingley . While Jane and Mr. Bingley immediately began to take a liking to each other, Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy certainly did not enjoy each others company, as upon their first meeting, Mr. Darcy had gravely insulted her with comments about her looks and also by not asking her to dance. It is not unusual for an individual to disagree with social customs or expectations. Some people are only happy when they can rebel against society. Most mature adults eventually realize that compromise is necessary to achieve happiness. This is the case in the early nineteenth century England setting of Pride and Prejudice, by Jane Austen. In the novel, Miss Elizabeth Bennet is a lively, independent woman, whose family's financial situation and whose strong mindedness suggest that she may never marry. Mr. Darcy, is a rigid and proper man, who falls in love with Elizabeth, despite their differences. By the end of the novel, Elizabeth and Darcy learn to compromise, and, in doing so, become truly happy. In marrying, they not only fulfill themselves as individuals, but also affirm the principle values of society. The marriage at the end of the novel shows Jane Austen's ideal view of marriage as a social institution.

Emma's personality is largely shaped by the nature of her upbringing. Emma had no motherly figure guiding her as she grew up, due to the fact that her mother passed away at a young age, and her governess, Miss Taylor, became her best friend instead of an authority over her. At the start of the novel Miss Taylor gets married to Mr. Weston, leaving Emma with her despondent and hypochondriac father, Mr. Woodhouse. Although Mr. Woodhouse often confines Emma to the house because of his paranoia of her being harmed, he gives her little guidance. Emma becomes accustomed to being the "princess" of her house, and she applies this role to all of her social interactions, as she develops the ability to manipulate people and control them to advance her own goals. Emma views herself with the highest regard, and feels competition and annoyance with those who threaten her position. The theme of social status and society is prevalent in the novel of Emma, through the characters Emma, Mr. Knightley, Mr. Churchill, and their situations and perspectives on life. Austen describes Emma as, “handsome, clever, and rich, with a comfortable home and happy disposition, seemed to unite some of the best blessings of existence; and had lived nearly twenty-one years in the world with very little to distress or vex her” makes her outlook disparate from characters such as Harriet (Austen, Emma 3). Immediately through her description, Austen indicates Emma’s haughty perspective on society through her referencing her friends as “first set” and “second set.” Through Emma’s classification of her friends by their social status and importance, first set being the superior and second set being the inferior and locum, the reader is able to have a glimpse of Emma’s outlook on society and it’s classes. As the novel progresses, Emma becomes more mature, and realizes how silly she had been in the past. In the end, she finally stops matchmaking others and marries Mr. Knightley, who was perfect for her all along. Mr. Knightley: Mr. Knightley is another main character in the novel. He is quite a bit older than Emma, at 38. He is also Emma’s brother-in-law.
In Jane Austen’s social class and coming of age novel, Emma, the relationships between irony, insight and education are based upon the premise of the character of Emma Woodhouse herself. The persona of Emma is portrayed through her ironic and naive tone as she is perceived as a character that seems to know everything, which brings out the comedic disparities of ironies within the narrative. Emma is seen as a little fish in a larger pond, a subject of manipulating people in order to reflect her own perceptions and judgments. Her education is her moral recognition to love outside her own sheltered fancies and her understandings of her society as a whole.
