A creation myth is an explanation of how the world began and how people first came to inhabit it. Every creation myth is different, but there is similarity in most of them. Motifs are recurring ideas that help develop a theme and these motifs are common in many creation myths. Three similar motifs are the idea of a supreme being, the idea of people being created from organic material, and the idea of rulers being overthrown. These concepts appear in the Inuit, Greek, Hindu, Chinese, Norse, and many more myths. These three motifs connect to one another and are common in many creation myths.

majority of these people have complete control over all forces. Large amounts of powers are possessed by the supreme beings and they are not easily defeated by opposing rulers. The supreme being ideology appears in creation myths such as the Inuit, the Greek, the Egyptian, and the Chinese. In the Chinese myth, Pan-gu is the supreme being who created Earth and mankind. The power of Ran-gu still has an effect on people because he is commonly worshipped by the Zhuang people to this day. Raven is a mighty and ruling man-bird in the Inuit creation myth. This creature has the ability to change between a man and a bird, making him more compelling than regular humans. Atum is the genderless, supreme being in the Egyptian myth. Atum created Shu and Tefnut who eventually created man and the rules of life. Zeus is the most obvious monarch in the Greek creation myth because he rules over the other gods. Zeus is the god of the sky who is worshipped in fear of his vigorous lightning bolts. I believe this motif appears in several creation myths because a distinguished leader wasn’t present. In other words, humans shared the same characteristics making them equally powerful but, a god was much more superior than regular people, which made them a leader. The idea of people being created from organic material is prevalent in the Chinese, Norse, and Inuit myths.
This varies from an ash and elm tree to pea-pod plants. In the Chinese creation myth, Nuwa went to the Yellow River and formed humans from clay after Ran-gu the dragon dies. Nuwa than realized how long it would take to make enough humans to inhabit over the very vast Earth so, she began flinging mud across the land. Mankind in the Inuit creation myth arose from a pea-pod plant placed by Raven. The offspring of the pea plant was believed to be the first creatures that the Earth possessed. The Norse believed the human race was initiated when Odin lifted an ash and elm tree which produced the human race. This tree was made from the cruel god Ymir’s hair after he was brutally killed. The concept of people being made from organic material is most likely the cause of early being’s dependence on nature. Many people during the time period of this belief used organic material to create shelter which was a long and difficult process. These ancient people believed that the process of creating mankind was lengthy, as the house, therefore, they must have been derived from the same product used to create their
homes. In many creation myths gods are taken over and removed from their power. This branches off from the supreme being belief. One God feels that they are much more of a supreme being than the other, so they take over. This is apparent in the Greek, Norse, and Hindu creation myths. In the Greek myth, Zeus felt that he was much more of a supreme being than his own father, Cronus, and overthrew him. The Hindu creation myth demonstrates this motif while incorporating a story of vengeance. Prajapati committed a forbidden and disgraceful act which caused him to be slain by the other gods, who took his power sanctuary. The Norse creation myth is an example of this motif because Ymir was the ruling god but, he was overthrown and murdered for being cruel and evil. I believe this motif was a common belief because treason was punishable by death and no one during the time period was brave enough to overthrow their ruler. Creation myths are used by many cultures to address unanswered questions about how the world was created and how humans began to live on earth. These myths have been developed over time to explain concepts that are difficult to understand. Motifs have become an important part of these myths. Three similar motifs are the idea of a supreme being, the idea of people being created from organic material, and the idea of rulers being overthrown. These three motifs are a part of different mythological creation stories. However, many myths have supreme beings who often move into heaven after they have used all of their supreme powers to create the world. Many myths include younger gods who become stronger and more powerful than the other gods and they fight against them to create a more peaceful world. Throughout these different myths, humans are created through organic material that has formed, explaining why we have humans on earth. These three motifs connect to one another and are common in many creation myths.
Most cultures have a creation myth, a story of how humans came to exist in the world. Often, they involve Gods of some capacity who exist without much question or explanation. Many myths have a common idea for the origin of the world, like Earth being born from water, a golden egg, or a great monster. The Mayan creation myth and the Babylonian creation myth are similar in that they both begin with water, and account the creation and purpose of man. They also differ, as the Mayan Popol Vuh chronicles a peaceful tale of trials to forge the Earth and sentient beings to worship the gods, while the Babylonian Enuma Elish tells of wars between gods that lead to the creation of Earth and of man as a servant to the gods.
Myths recur across cultures and times because they are narrative and iconic manifestations of psychological archetypes which are themselves universal across times and cultures. An archetype is a universal symbolic pattern that is a motif, theme or character or image that repeats itself in many different cultures. It can be compared to a blueprint or a prototype that gets re-visited many different times. Some of the most popular examples are stories of great floods, initiation, creation, the underworld and motherhood. Archetypal characters and stories appear consistently in myths across many various cultures. Archetype myths explain the nature and creation of the world how life came about. Creation myths are made to explain how the Earth was created and to introduce information on the relationship a group has with their creator. In both Iroquois and Babylonian creation myths, the gods do not find the Earth below as their first priority. In the Iroquois myth, the gods only help out the Earth when they are needed, but in the Babylonian myth, humans have more of a relationship with gods as the god that created Earth is willing to go beyond what is needed to help better the human experience on Earth.
As human beings, we are designed to belive in something. Although the belief in a higher power or religion is diverse, many theologies share common themes. “The Epic of Gilgamesh” and the Hebrew book of “Genesis” are seemingly polar opposites. Christianity, demonstrated in Genesis, is monotheistic, and the Hebrews base their faith on their relationship with God. On the other hand, Sumerian philosophy, found in Gilgamesh, is polytheistic, and the Sumerian people base their theology on fear. Ancient polytheistic literature forms an archetypical pattern of the mortals trying desperately to please the gods. A mortal’s entire existence rests in the hands of the sometimes childish gods. Myths – as they are known to most of the world – give insight into the pasts of various countries and religions as the people saw them. They have been used to explain phenomenons in nature or describe the tales of courageous and important men and women throughout history. Creation myths in particular define how the Earth itself was created, along with the universe, heavens, hell, people, and creatures that exist today. Genesis of Christian mythology, for instance, tells the story of how the single deity God spoke and formed everything from day and night to man and woman. Various African creation myths, such as with the Yoruba, explain the creation of the Earth through at least a couple gods working together and all life sprouting from a seed. But all share a common themes, such as a form of chaos or nothingness before life is created. Joseph Campbell notes that “... the idea of an absolute ontological distinction between God and man – or between gods and men, divinity and nature - first became an important social and psychological force in the near East, specifically Akkad, in the period of the first Semetic Kings, c. 2500 B.C.,” showing another similar trait – a god or set of gods exists to create in each story (626). Joseph Campbell makes a comparison of how both Genesis and the Book of the Dead of Egypt share the same idea of their bodies belonging to their god in some way, or being reabsorbed into them at death (630-631). Others, like the Japanese and Iroquois creation myths, claim the Earth was once covered entirely of water before land was formed. Adam and Eve of Genesis and Izanagi and sister Izanami of Shintoism provide examples of myths that share both a passive and active pair of people who eventually create the Earth's population. In any case, certain popular creation myths, some closely tied to prominent religions, share more common characteristics than others. An entire sub-study, called comparative mythology, gives insight into this subject.
There are various diverse creation myths from Native American cultures, though many hold similar characteristics. One of the more common forms of creation myth seems to be emergence myth. Generally, in the emergence myth, instead of seeing how the world is created, we see how the people arrive in an already created world. This particular story type is commonly found in Native American cultures from the southwest (Ryan). The Tewa Pueblo version of this myth, entitled How the People Came to the Middle Place, has been collected and written down by the anthropologists Alice Marriott and Carol K. Rachlin in their book, American Indian Mythology. The myth was told to them by two separate sources, Maria Martinez of San Ildefonso and Leonidas Vigil of Nambe Pueblo. This myth helps to illustrate important parts of their culture and probably held multiple functions for the Pueblo people.
Throughout the world there are various cultures with varying religions and creation stories to explain the creation of the Earth and it’s inhabitants. Of these creation stories two with similar and also different characteristics is the Creation story in the book of Genesis which is a part of the 1st Testament in the Hebrew Bible and explains the creation of Earth and humans, and the Theogony which is the greek creation story that describes the origins of the Earth and the Greek Gods. Both the Theogony and the Creation in Genesis show nature as a blessing for humans but it can also affect them negatively, However the myths differ in the ways that the Earth and humans were created and how humans interact with the deities of the creation stories.
The Maori myth is a Polynesian story about the creation of the universe which according to Rosenberg was different from other creation myths because it begins with nothing and then progresses through a process of “nonbeing to thought to the creation of the universe and human beings” (351). Even though it may be different because it goes from “nonbeing to thought” instead of nothingness to a spoken word or action, it has many similarities to other creation myths in how it explains the origins of the Gods and how each one represents a natural event or aspect of nature and humanity. The myth begins with an “idea” that “was remembered” and then “became conscious” and then “a wish to create”, all of which created a “power to live and to grow, even in emptiness” (352). At this point there was still no being, only thought and desire which gives the idea that what is being addressed are the human attributes of feeling, sensing, desire and thought, this is where this story is different from other creation myths.
Organic material The most commonly noticed motif is how humans always seem to come from some kind of organic material. The Yoruba and Inuit created humans out of clay; although, in the Inuit myth, only women were made out of clay. Also, in the Inuit creation, men came out of pea plants!
The creation myths that I have studied are similar in many ways. They also have differences that show an inherently different way of thinking about the world. All have creators-gods that make the world into what is now. There are conflicts within their world, and these conflicts change the face world. God to god or human to god maybe be involved in these conflicts. Their bloody struggles prove who is more powerful, causing change in the control of the world. Some gods are beneficial to man and others are self-serving, using man only as a tool.
Throughout history man has searched for an explanation of our origins and why we are here. Many creation myths are attempts of our ancestors to do just that. I have found in reading many of these creation myths, that there is also an attempt to explain why human existence is imperfect. The following essay will compare and contrast four creation myths and their explanation of how mans imperfection came to be.
Just look at two creation stories side-by-side and you should easily see their similarities. Perhaps the easiest way to do this would be to take one unknown creation story and compare it to one from one’s own culture. Below is an example of a Mongolian creation myth:
Mythology is defined as a collection of interrelated stories of a given culture. Myths are intended to explain and describe the mysteries of nature and give understanding about the world that surrounds us. Each culture has their own mythology that reflects their values and beliefs. Myths were also generated to tell the story of the first people to inhabit the earth. The Egyptian mythology elevated these people to the level of Gods and Goddesses by giving them supernatural and special powers. These myths of creation were passed from one generation to the next, either orally or by hieroglyphs painted in sacred temples, pyramids, and sanctuaries.
Creation myth is a basic type of myth. Normally, creation myths contain information and describe how the world is created in different ways, based on the country’s culture and geography. The countries that are located in the same area may have the same or similar myth, while the countries that are located in different area may have different myth. In almost every myths, magical or supernatural elements are included, and that make the story fun and interesting. Japan and Greece are located in different parts of the world, so their myths have many different parts.
Within the texts of Genesis which belong to the biblical scriptures of the Hebrews, and the myths of Egyptian origin, there are a multitude of similarities and differences. When compared side by side, the most obvious factor of both texts is that a single God was the creator of all that we know today. In Genesis that creator is simply referred to as God, while in Egyptian mythology, the creator is known as Neb-er-tcher. Both creators have striking resemblances, such as the ways they went about the production of the world.
