There are five pillars of Islam written down in hadith; Shahada, Salah, Zakat, Sawm and Hajj. These five pillars are the necessary steps for a Muslim to perform his obligations to the full. By applying these pillars in the daily life, a Muslim can achieve complete peace and fellowship in his life.
Shahada being the first and most important one. It states that there is only one God, Allah, and that Muhammad (PBUH) is his messenger. When a person recites this text, normally spoken in Arabic, he declares himself as a believer of Allah and only Allah and prepares to follow all the teachings and acts of His Prophet, Muhammad (PBUH). Fasting in the month of Ramadan is the act of abstaining from any type of food and water through the duration of dawn to dusk. Before dawn, the act of Sehri is performed, during which Muslims eat food to allow their bodies to be ready for the next several hours till the time of Iftar at dusk. During this time, Muslims are supposed to not eat, drink, speak foul language, look at un-religious things, think about un-religious thoughts and participate in any act that is forbidden or not suggested in Islam. And apart from abstaining from eating or drinking, the rest of the acts are to be followed all the time throughout the month. Ramadan teaches a person several virtues and principles. The main ones being, to feel the hunger of the poor and needy and to feel for a month what they feel throughout the year; to relieve yourself of all impurities and wrongful thoughts and practices which allows you to become pure at heart and worship Allah with your full intent and gratification. Such things allow Muslims to give more to the poor because of knowing and reminding themselves of how they suffer, and move further to cleanse the body and mind of the people of all worldly matters and property. Haj is the most powerful unifying force in Islam. There is no greater display of Muslim unity than the Haj. It is a grand manifestation of Muslim brotherhood without social and national boundaries. It provides once-in-a-life time opportunity to all Muslims who can afford it wherever he maybe to assemble at the holy city of Makkah where the holy Kaaba is located, for a five-day rituals of worship. Muslims regardless of nationality, color and creed get a unique opportunity to meet and exchange views. There is a will to forge the much-needed unity within the Ummah. We do perform all the rituals with religious devotion and spend most of the time in the worship of Allah. The Haj provides a lesson one quality and brotherhood. A sea of pilgrims descends upon the holy city of Makkah. All the men are dressed in two pieces of white cloth; the idea being that one should not be able to tell a prince from a pauper. It shows we are one nation bound by religion. It provides us with a Universalist view of mankind. Allah wants us to think and behave in universal terms and the Haj is one of most potent signs of Allah's will. In short, the Divine Law which prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) brought with him is so comprehensive and practical that it covers all temporal and spiritual affairs.
