Most Egyptians do a tradition where kids will go out every night with lanterns singing the lyrics for Ramadan. However, the problem is that people take the month of Ramadan as a celebration and then forget that Ramadan is not only about celebration but also about religion. They also fight about whether the Christians celebrate with the Muslims or not. “Revivalist attempting to paint the holiday as an ascetic, spiritual experience, destroying the mixed religions secular culture that has been an Egyptian tradition for the past century or more” (Krieger). I believe everyone has rights to celebrate if wanted. The problem here is what is the celebrating. The Muslim’s celebrate the month of Ramadan for the revelation of the holy book to Prophet Mohammed during that month. In the last fifty or so years, we have turned fasting into a way to lose a few pounds for a big event....or as a way to bounce back after weeks of "splurging". There are fasts (aka cleanses) that range from only drinking water, to drinking water/lemon/cayenne pepper, to only juicing, to now only brothing.
Ramadam is the Islam holiday or Muslim holy month. It takes place during the ninth month of the Islam year. Because the Islam calendar is Lunar (has to do with pattern of moon) Ramadam falls at different times during the year. It is a time for spiritual reflection, worship, renewal of faith, and charity. The Muslims get this holy day from the Koran. It is found under Surah: 185 which states:
Fasting is a way of life for most people. For them it is a way to preserve certain things, which helps them enjoy them better. To make life enjoyable people should fast more often, so that they can enjoy the simpler things in life and live a fuller life. The people that know this the best are hunters, and sailors, because they have to give up aspects of their life on a daily basis. For example, sailors have to give up their family when they go out for a voyage but when they return and see their family the feeling is intensified because they have lived without them for a while. Fasting also helps people understand and appreciate the value of things in their lives. One very popular Muslim holiday is Ramadan. Ramadan is the ninth month on the Islamic calendar, during this month Muslims are expected to fast during the day. Next my gaze is drawn upward to the golden dome and crescent moon covering the Mosque. Many non-Muslims are of the belief that Muslims pray or worship a "moon god". We do not. We believe in the same God as Christians and Jews. We believe in the oneness of God', the Creator of Abraham, Moses, and Jesus. The crescent moon reflects our practice of adhering to the lunar calendar, or God's calendar, rather than the Georgian calendar, or man's calendar. This is why many Mosques will have a crescent moon topping the domes.
Both Islam and Christianity have practices or duties, which are central to the daily routines of life. The five pillars of Islam are the foundation of the way Muslims live. The first pillar of Islam is the Shahadah, the Declaration of Faith. This says; ‘There is no God but Allah and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah’. The second pillar is salah, which says that Muslims should pray five times a day. This applies to all Muslims, except Shi’is are permitted to combine the five prayers into three sessions. The third pillar is zakah, which means giving money to people who are poor or in need. The fourth pillar is sawm, which means fasting. Every year, during the month of Ramadan, Muslims fast during hours of daylight. The fifth pillar is Hajj. This is the pilgrimage to Mekkah, which
The Qur’an is believe to the ultimate source of God by many Muslim believers. It contains 114 suras for the believers as the core practices of the Islamic religion and Muslims throughout the world recites its verses (Chang, Lecture. 1/21/14). They believed the prophet of Allah was Muhammad, who received the words of Allah through Angel Gabriel, and was passed on with the Qur’an during Ramadan. Angel Gabriel one night came to Muhammad “in clear human form” (“Scripture and Tradition in Islam- The Qur’an and Hadith” 104), and gave the messages from Allah to him. From the establishment of the Qur’an, Muslims have viewed the book as the last revelation of their god Allah, and thus are the true words from God for their ways of life and in reaching Allah in their afterlife. The book also teaches “mankind’s responsibility assigned by God” (Gordon 115). Therefore, Muslims practices in ways to prove their devotion towards the new religion of Islam by being faithful, and performing religious practices.

But the reality of the matter is that religion is still a prominent authority in society and the world. Just with holidays alone, what religion you are deems what holidays you celebrate because of religious ideology. Even though Hanukkah, and Christmas are seen as the same, they are different celebrations for different religions, and are also based off of different sets of ideologies. One of the most important holidays for people who are Jewish is Yom Kippur or Day of Atonement which is a holiday that strictly Jewish people celebrate. Ramadan which is a whole month of fasting, because fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam, is a holiday that only Muslim people partake in. Even if you don’t practice Christianity or Catholicism chances are you still celebrate Christmas and Easter which are religious holidays. No one really gets the opportunity to choose which holidays that they want to celebrate because there are already set holidays for people to celebrate based on their religion and what area of the world that they live in. A lot of people do not get to form their own basis of beliefs because one is already chosen for them by their parents or location. Although many countries have the freedom of choice, many people do not exercise that freedom on holidays.
