To be able to bounce back from horrible events, obstacles and work to improve the condition of life. The courage to achieve the end goal no matter how hard the task may be. Having the confidence and bravery to stand up for what is right and just. All of these are examples of what grit truly is. Many americans have gone through bad situations thus challenging whether or not they have grit, and Britney Spears and Marilyn Monroe both came from broken families and both have had struggles with mental illness; however, they both have overcome their struggles and became the most iconic transcending women in Hollywood due to their grit.

every American aspires to achieve true grit. Not all people can achieve this goal due to multiple obstacles in life. However Marilyn Monroe and Britney Spears have gone above and beyond by overcoming their struggles in life. They truly demonstrate just what American grit is. Grit is a personality trait possessed by individuals who demonstrate passion and perseverance towards a goal, despite being confronted by significant obstacles and distractions. The American dream is to come to America and achieve great things. In order to do this you need grit to develop and follow through with your aspirations to ultimately achieve the American dream. People from all around the world leave their countries and work from the ground up. These people start off in part time jobs and work themselves up to corporate full time jobs, this all has to do with the motivation to create a better life for themselves which essentially is the American dream. An American who has true grit is Marilyn Monroe. Marilyn Monroe is a film actress and model from the 50’s. She has remained one of Hollywood's most iconic sex symbols with her eye-catching style and champagne blonde hair. Marilyn Monroe had a very troubled childhood, she spent two years at a orphanage and spent most of her young years in foster homes where she was mistreated and experienced sexual abuse. Her mother was severely mentally ill as well. Due to moving around so much Marilyn Monroe only graduated from middle school. “Norma Jean Baker, better known as Marilyn Monroe, experienced a disrupted, loveless childhood that included two years at an orphanage. When Norma Jean, born on June 1, 1926, in Los Angeles, California, was seven years old, her mother, Gladys (Monroe) Baker Mortenson, was hospitalized after being diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic, a severe mental condition. Norma was left in a series of foster homes and the Los Angeles Orphans' Home Society. The constant move from one foster home to another resulted in Norma's "sketchy" educational background.” ("Marilyn Monroe Biography.") As already stated, grit is being able to bounce back from horrible events and work to improve the condition of life. This is exactly what Marilyn Monroe did, instead of letting her trauma affect her and live her life feeling sorry for herself or angry towards those who hurt her, she got better. After she was discovered by a photographer she then became a model and prepared to become an actress by taking acting lessons with Lee Strasberg, a teacher and a acting theorist who worked with some of the most remarkable actors. Marilyn Monroe also struggled with mental illness. She had depression, borderline personality disorder. “What is clear is that Monroe suffered from severe mental distress. Her symptoms included a feeling of emptiness, a split or confused identity, extreme emotional volatility, unstable relationships, and an impulsivity that drove her to drug addiction and suicide -- all textbook characteristics of a condition called borderline personality disorder.”(Genova) A part of what stemmed Marilyn Monroe’s depression is her divorce with Arthur Miller and Clark Gable’s death, Clark was Monroe’s costar in the movie “The Misfits”. Clark died from a heart attack, it was said that 10 days before he had the heart attack he expressed his thoughts about the movie when he said, “ On the last day of filming, Clark Gable said regarding Marilyn Monroe, "Christ, I'm glad this picture's finished. She damn near gave me a heart attack." (Trivia). It was rumored that Kay Gable, Clark's wife, said that Marilyn Monroe was the reason for her husband's death. “Rumors began flying that Kay Gable, Clark's young widow who was pregnant with his first child, blamed Monroe for her husband's death. Kay claimed that the stress Gable had had to endure during the filming of The Misfits, including the daily delays in excessive heat, had led to his heart attack.” (Doll) Marilyn Monroe was so distraught that she went into seclusion and developed depression. “Upon hearing this, Monroe spiraled into a dark depression -- the thought that she had caused the death of the man she had idolized since childhood was too much to bear.” (Doll). As mentioned, Grit is being able to overcome obstacles, Marilyn Monroe had mental illness and great distress from her friend dying and instead of staying in seclusion forever and not going back to work and making movies, she starred in another movie called “Something's Got To Give” and received the Henrietta Award for World Film Favorites. In despite of all the horrible things happening in her life she didn't let it hold her down and prospered. Another American who has grit is Britney Spears.
Britney Spears is an American singer, dancer and actress she is most famous for her tracks “Baby One More Time” and “Oops I Did It Again”. She is also famous for starring in the movie “Crossroads” which was a box-office success with over $61.1 million worldwide in three months. Britney Spears also had a troubled child like Marilyn Monroe, Spears's father Jamie Spears was very violent at home. Spear’s uncle often recalled times when her father was violent. “ Her uncle Willie Spears - who is Jamie's brother - revealed in Steve Dennis' new book 'Britney: Inside the Dream': "I was at the house and Jamie walked in drunk and called Lynne a bad name. She was in the kitchen drinking water and he grabbed the glass, walked into the lounge and just hurled it. It was rough, but the sad thing is that it became normal life." ( Britney Spears Suffered Turbulent Childhood) As said, to have grit is to being able to bounce back from horrible events and work to improve the condition of life. Children of alcoholics are said to have low self esteem. Instead of giving in to that low self esteem and doubt that life isn’t going to get any better, Britney Spear’s worked and pushed herself toward her goal of being a singer so that she could become famous and get out of that way of life and prosper. Another thing that Britney Spear’s has in common with Marilyn Monroe is that she also has mental illnesses. Britney has bipolar and depression. “Sources very close to the family told ‘People’ magazine over the weekend that they believe that Britney has been suffering from bipolar disorder for a very long time, also postpartum depression,” he said. “That may explain this behavior. (Sources: Spears Suffering from Bipolar Disorder) Spear’s had a breakdown in 2007 in which she shaved her head and attacked paparazzi with an umbrella. In between rehab stints in 2007, the bald-headed pop star blew up at a paparazzo tasked with chronicling her increasingly
bizarre exploits. Brandishing an umbrella, Spears — after issuing a desperate plea for privacy — attacked the photographer's car.(“Top 10 Celebrity/Paparazzi Showdowns) This caused a lot of humiliation for Spears, all of the nation was commenting on her actions and assuming her character negatively. Even through all of this, Spears demonstrates grit by not letting these things get to her, bounce back from this obstacle in her life and have confidence to perform again. She had the perseverance to work hard and find her passion again to perform and worked hard to come back strong. She demonstrated this by working extremely hard on her new album entitled “Glory” which has become significantly successful. “While Britney has always been known as a hard worker and talented artist, she’s particularly proud of how much effort she put into making “Make Me” a new classic! “She really put her all into this new album and took her time choosing the songs,” our insider continues. “She worked on it for almost two years because she wanted it to be perfect. Britney would be the first to tell you she is a perfectionist.” (Mckinney) Instead of letting her demons win, Spear’s found the motivation and persevered and learned to live with her mental illnesses. Every person fails in order to succeed. Britney Spears and Marilyn Monroe displayed this in their lives. Despite all the hardships like having a bad childhood or dealing with mental illness, they persevered. This is how they are the accurate representation of what true American grit is.
