Over the decades, many people have migrated to the United States of America seeking freedom and the opportunity to achieve a better life that is otherwise unachievable in their motherland. These desires and actions morphed into the American Dream we know today. The American Dream is the search for good fortune and success that motivates people to test their own limits and endure in order to lead accomplished lives and achieve whichever goals they set. The American Dream is a reality; every United States citizen has the chance to achieve no matter what prejudices they face, depending on their determination and luck.
The American Dream is a controversial subject when considering what it actually means and whether or not it still lives. It has endless interpretations however, the one outlined by the Founders of America themselves can be used as the general definition, “ Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” This dream most Americans strive for. In simple terminology, The American Dream is the opportunity for the pursuit of freedom, attainment and satisfaction of needs and desires. Thomas Wolfe stated, “ ...to every man, regardless of his birth, his shining, golden opportunity ...the right to live, to work, to be himself, and to become whatever thing his manhood and his vision can combine to make him” (www.loc.gov, 2014). This quote explains how anyone has the right to grasp this American Dream in the United States, to function in modern society and to pursue hopes and dreams. If you immigrate to America underprivileged, you have the chance to change your standing through motivation and determination. Mostly, people end up gambling themselves to bankruptcy. If relying solely on luck and ignoring perseverance, then gaining the American Dream will often become impossible.
The American dream is having opportunity and successfully accomplishing goals. It is the freedom that everyone in America has to follow their hopes and dreams and to lead a full life. Even if coming to America as an impoverished immigrant, you still have the opportunity to climb the ladder of success and get a better financial and living status. The achievement of the American dream almost always relates to your own willingness to work. If you work hard and have enough perseverance, you may be lucky enough to snatch up success.
