Comparing Service Providers ISP vs ASP
In today's society, technology is the wave of the future. With the invention of the Internet, the world seems to get smaller and smaller, minute-by-minute. When using the Internet, one must have a service provider to access any information that is out there on the information superhighway. The two service providers I will be explaining in this report are Internet Service Providers (better known as ISPs and Application Service Providers (better known as ASPs). There is a big difference between Internet Service Providers and Application Service Providers. An internet service provider (ISP) is a company that provides individuals and other companies access to the Internet and other related services such as Web site building and virtual hosting. An application service provider (ASP) is a company that offers individuals or enterprises access over the Internet to applications and related services that would otherwise have to be located in their own personal or enterprise computers. In this report I will talk about the vast differences in these two service providers including their history, their current uses, and their future directions.
ISP
The most common way to access the Internet from home is with a modem and a phone call to an Internet Service Provider (ISP). Your computer connects via modem to the ISP, which in turn is connected to the Internet with a high-speed link. An ISP has the equipment and the telecommunication line access required to have pop on the Internet for the geographic area served. The internet is expanding every day to new heights never reached before. To accommodate this new growth, internet service providers are needed. One of the largest internet service providers today is American Online, otherwise known as AOL. AOL has created a friendly atmosphere where online users can easily navigate their way on the internet. There are many reasons as to why AOL is one of the leading internet service providers. By clearly gathering and evaluating these reasons, it is obvious they have made all the right choices in building a successful company.
The Internet Era is here and the advances in digital technology are completely changing the way we live. From digital cellular phones to handheld computers not much bigger than a stack of playing cards, digital technology has created an unprecedented explosion of new products that allow consumers to communicate with one another as well as integrate the numerous products they use in their daily lives. This increase in integration along with the increased speed of communication has created the “global” economy in which most business must operate to remain competitive. “Hardly a day goes by that we do not encounter products that are enabled by DSP technology. From consumer electronics including cell phones, toys, TV’s DVD, answering machines, to military, scientific, medical and infrastructure applications. DSP’s are showing up everywhere.”(Frantz, 2000) Let us take a look at one company that is heavily involved in the Internet Era.

The Internet has revolutionized the computer and communications world like nothing before. The Internet enables communication and transmission of data between computers at different locations. The Internet is a computer application that connects tens of thousands of interconnected computer networks that include 1.7 million host computers around the world. The basis of connecting all these computers together is by the use of ordinary telephone wires. Users are then directly joined to other computer users at there own will for a small connection fee per month. The connection conveniently includes unlimited access to over a million web sites twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. There are many reasons why the Internet is important these reasons include: The net adapts to damage and error, data travels at 2/3 the speed of light on copper and fiber, the internet provides the same functionality to everyone, the net is the fastest growing technology ever, the net promotes freedom of speech, the net is digital, and can correct errors. Connecting to the Internet cost the taxpayer little or nothing, since each node was independent, and had to handle its own financing and its own technical requirements.
The Internet has become a key ingredient of strenuous and busy lifestyle. ‘Internet’ has become the central-hub for communication, explorations, connecting with people or for official purposes. Resultantly, Internet growth has led to a plethora of new developments, such as decreased margins for companies as consumers turn more and more to the internet to buy goods and demand the best prices.
