Romeo and Juliet is a beloved story that has been told and retold over and over again. There are many different stories and versions of Romeo and Juliet, and they are all quite different. Some of these differences include time period, characters, and setting. Despite these differences, all these stories revolve around the same theme(s).
There are many differences between Luhrmann’s 1996 and Zeffirelli’s 1968 versions of Romeo and Juliet. One of these differences is the setting and time era. Zeffirelli’s version is more fitting of Shakespeare’s idea of the time era – it is all very renaissance. They start out with a tournament, they use swords, and they dress to their part. Another difference is culture. In the new version, the movie starts in the city, and it is a fight between the Montague’s and the Capulets. Perhaps the most important between the two versions is the religions and beliefs of the people as a whole.
Another big difference is the “appeal” of the movies. Zeffirelli’s version is more fitting of Shakespeare’s time era, and clearly illustrates the factors of the renaissance. Zeffirelli’s interpretation also makes it easier to envision the setting, actors, and culture that are part of the classic Romeo and Juliet. In fact, there have been many different interpretations and stories that have all come from Romeo and Juliet; but in spite of these differences, they all have one thing in common: their theme. For example, in Luhrmann’s version, Paris is killed, and Rosaline attends the party. Zeffirelli’s version, however, is almost the complete opposite of this. Despite these differences, they both end the same way, and they both have the same theme: love. No matter who the characters are, they sacrifice everything for each other.
