APLANG By Whitney Wright A1 Mankind has always wondered about the future and what is in store for society. The key to success makes us constantly remind ourselves how we working towards a tomorrow that is not guaranteed or question everything about our world reveals much about character. We must not be mistaken; we are in a building oppression created by our corrupt system of government that has made people of the world. In Postman’s assertions we see him contrast the belief of both Orwell and Huxley. I believe that Postman’s Assertion of Orwell is inaccurate because of my own observation of the world and the history of our country, especially within the last twenty years. In Postman’s Assertion, he says that Huxley’s vision is far more …show more content…
relevant than Orwell’s being based on what Orwell thought would happen in a certain year. Orwell’s point was that our society would no longer be ran by Big Brother, but controlled.
I stand by Orwell’s belief on what we have become because it has truth. Orwell talks about how we have been burdened by an oppression of a higher power, and he is right. People are controlled by our government. One of the biggest things that is controlled by the government is how much money is granted to those in “need”. Sadly, our government bases need off income but doesn’t control how it is spent rather than what it is spent on. I know this part of the problem because people have become so dependent on money, but not on how we get it. When people or unable to make money for themselves, the government steps in to help. But Big Brother can only help so much, and will only help so much. Government funded money is based off of how much income is made. But in some cases they make people who work professional Jobs everyday (and still qualify for welfare) lopeing them in the same groups as people who don’t work every day and use their checks for things outside of what they know the government would never fund for them, like illegal narcotics. This proves how much respect people really even have for this higher power. Money controls the people and Our Government controls the
money. The Governments control of the people has really gotten stronger as our society has intermingled with the advancing of technology. At any time, The government is able to tap into phone calls, read your personal emails, check your history on your computer, and essentially know everything about you. This includes things done in privacy that you would not intend for anyone to take part of in the business. Our Government has eliminated the right to privacy that was once something cherished and respected as a right. Becoming a captive culture is what Orwell feared and it’s what has become of us. The “Orwellian Nightmare” is upon us as predicted. Hate and greed are running the world, and love is nowhere in sight in a place of coldness and vacancy due to the higher power from there flawed system.
To conclude, Postman's analysis that Huxley's vision of the future has become more of a reality than that of Orwell's. Although the present day is not exactly how Huxley had envisioned it, our society will soon reflect the one created in Brave New World if it continues to progress as it had in the past few decades. Orwell's prediction does not hold much relevance in today's society. Our government is not constantly watching over us, they have more important difficulties to overcome. Government is not concerned with the actions of individuals; they base their decisions on the opinions of the masses. Huxley's travesty holds far more relevance than the prestigious social theory of Orwell.

...n a government is the group that states what is to be socially acceptable and what is not, it greatly hinders a person ability to act as an individual. Whether it is the fear of being classified as abnormal, false or unjust imprisonment, or making a show out of large groups of the abnormal people, it is all in order for the government to maintain control. Within both of these contexts it is more important for there to be a strong central government than to allow a person to truly be an unique, which in return takes away what is considered to be a persons right.
Postman then goes on to acknowledges that there are several different places that exist in the world where the totalitarianism of thought control exists. Another well-known author named George Orwell describes this in his fantastically written book ‘1984’. Postman does not see America that way…in the way that Orwell viewed America. As an alternative, Postman believes that America is actually threatened by “an enemy with a smiling face,” where “Big Brother(George Orwell’s ‘1984’) does not watch us…We watch him” (155).
In reality, the government only exists because the people have chosen it to execute their
Early on in his essay, Orwell describes how the abuses and treatment he witnessed oppressed him '… with an intolerable sense of guilt,'; (Orwell,277). This is not some minor pang, or nagging worry. The shame pressed down on his shoulders with an unbearable weight. He also describes the injustices in detail, using vivid pictures like 'The wretched prisoners huddling in the stinking cages…'; (Orwell,277). This does not come from someone who condones such behavior. It stems from a troubled, remorseful soul.
From 1990 to the present, government welfare such as income assistance and food stamps have aided the unemployed, the ill, and the broken families of America, but government assistance greatly affects the myth that hard work is the only pathway to success, and welfare provides many negative, as well as positive impacts to society. In the United States, many different welfare systems offer a wide range of benefits including money and food stamps to a variety of people. Plagued with economic issues and a shrinking middle class, the poorest Americans keep getting poorer, and the door seems to be shutting more and more on the opportunity to rise above their impoverished roots. Welfare aims to provide aid to those poor Americans who need an extra boost to keep up and help them in achieving the sought after “American Dream.” According to the US Committee of the Budget: House of Representatives, “There are at least 92 federal programs designed to help lower-income Americans. For instance, there are dozens of education and job-training programs, 17 different food-aid programs, and over 20 housing programs. The federal government spent $799 billion on these programs in fiscal year 2012”. Welfare also greatly affects a large number of the United States’ population, and as Robert Rector states in the article “Spiraling State of Welfare Spending,” “Roughly 100 million people- one-third of the United States population- received at least one means-tested welfare program each month (Feulner). Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) provides cash assistance for families with children in need. TANF was created after the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Act, which was instituted in 1996 under President Bill Clinton. PRWORA aimed ...
Poverty is an issue in America that has become a growing problem. While it may not necessarily be an issue that gains a lot of attention from people in today’s society, it is still a problem that should be addressed, especially in times of economic hardship like the ones that we are currently experiencing. Money has become tight for a lot of people, but there are still those that have always had a problem meeting the needs that they have in everyday life. In order to address this problem, the government put into place many government aid programs that are designed to help those when they are truly in need of it. However, it seems that today there are many people who are receiving government aid that do not truly need it. These are the people that cheat the system and the tax payers who are paying for the benefits that they are receiving.
George Orwell stated, “Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two make four. If that is granted, all else follows.”() The government is able to control how each and every
Millions of people in the United States today are on some type of public assistance. Some Americans are on Medicare, which provides to the people who cannot afford private health insurance and for those 65 or older. Another type of public assistance is TANF, which many families are on; an organization that helps needy families with some grants and guidance provided by the government. Some states are taking all obligatory measurements to make sure that the taxpayers’ money for public assistance is being used properly by those people who actually need the help and not to buy drugs and alcohol. These public restrictions are put in place, so the people who actually need the help to survive and who wish to live their lives with the American dream in mind, may have a chance.
This is a remarkable book of objective description as well as of rhetoric. While he does have a bias, he is still able to recognize points on either side. Orwell had the rare courage to overcome centuries of class prejudice to live among and respect the people his peers could casually dismiss. He shows us the role that the middle class play in creating these deplorable conditions.
change the economy, and, the control is given to the people with the money, or,
Based on the two essays, George Orwell is a vivid writer who uses a unique point of view and strong themes of pride and role playing to convey his messages. His writings are easy to pick out because of the strengths of these messages. Just like politicians in government, people with power turn corrupt to stay in power and keep their reputations. Anyone who takes on power must be prepared to live with the consequences of his actions. Orwell knows this challenge well and conveys this principle in his writing. After all, his narration is based on real life experiences and not fictional fantasies.
Aldous Huxley claims, “Systematic reasoning is something we could not, as a species or as individuals, possibly do without. But neither, if we are to remain sane, can we possibly do without direct perception.” Huxley makes a very good point in saying, it is key to our society to have unsystematic reasoning, as much as it is key to have systematic reasoning. Direct perception cannot be overlooked for it was the individuals that had this thought process that brought upon some of the key factors that make up our language and systems today. A balance of both systematic and unsystematic reasoning is the groundwork for our society, and without balance we may “become the victims as well as the beneficiaries of these systems”.
The Government dictates so many aspects of our lives that it would most likely be easier to list how they don’t dictate us. In my essay I will give a few of the many ways our Government is ruling our lives.
