The two paintings have much more differences than meets the eye. Firstly, the periods during which the portraits are made are very distinct with a difference of an estimate of four centuries. Mona Lisa's portrait was made in the early 1500s while that of Adele Bloch-Bauer was painted in the early 1900s. Many transitions took place since the Renaissance period to the post-industrialization period. Possibly, this could be used to explain the clear-cut differences between the two. Secondly, the portrait of Mona is half-length her full body while that of Adele is full length. This depicts a varied art in use of space by the two artists. Thirdly, the two subjects display a discrete type of clothing. Mona is quite ordinary and simple despite the
fact that she is from an aristocratic family. The mourning veil is also attributed to a low-class social status possibly to indicate the need for the Royals to associate with the commoners. Adele, on the other hand, is inarguably a noble character. The vast portion of her veil is golden hence the name ‘The lady in Gold.' Unlike Mona whose physical appearance is highly evidenced by the art, Adele's physical characteristics hardly make a twelfth of the entire portrait.

For my assignment, I will be comparing the two pieces of art titled Louis XIV painted by Hyacinthe Rigaud and Portrait of Marie Antoinette With Her Children by Marie-Louise-Elisabeth Vigee-Lebrun. I will be analyzing and breaking down the different techniques used in both paintings and explaining the similarities between them as well. Though the paintings contain the same family throughout both, there is a clear imbalance in power and something very normal for this time period. The Renaissance in Western Europe brought a “rebirth” to the arts. No longer was the church the only accredited patron for the arts. Instead, a wealthy middle class arose as patrons and were able to purchase artist’s works. Although many pieces still had religious themes, the styles, freedom of creativity, and less reserved pieces were created. The Renaissance was not only confined to Italy, although it is often mistaken as the birthplace of the movement. All over Western Europe artwork flourished. Artists from the north came to Italy to study the classical arts and the renowned Italian Renaissance artists. Many of the same themes and subject matters were depicted throughout Western Europe. One such subject matter, the Annunciation, was portrayed by Jan van Eyck, a Flemish panel painter, as well as, Fra Angelico, an Italian fresco painter. In short, the Annunciation occurred when God sends the angel, Gabriel to deliver the message to Mary that she will give birth to his only son. Although both artists had the same understanding of the biblical account, their styles varied to agree with the concerns and interests of the people of the time as well as where they lived. They were able to establish their individuality through their artwork, even with the same subject matter. The Annunciation by Jan van Eyck is a perfect reflection of Northern Renaissance panel painting while Annunciation by Fra Angelico is the essence of Italian Renaissance fresco painting.

In four of Hawthorne's stories there is a struggle for power and control as a vehicle to obtain perfection or beauty. It is a not so unique portrait, of a not so unique woman, set before a blurry landscape.
