Piccard’s and Walsh’s Deep Sea Decent
Jacques Piccard and Don Walsh were the first people to take a deep sea-vehicle to the oceans deepest point in 1960. They were transported by a bathyscaphe called the Trieste, 35,797 feet into the Marianna trench, in the Pacific Ocean.

The Trieste was built in Italy. It was a Swedish design and was invented and worked on by Auguste Piccard and his son Jacques Piccard.(Bathyscaphe Trieste) Who helped design the bathyscaphe to be capable to dive deeper into the ocean. In 1956 Jaques Piccard went to the U.S., inquiring about funds for future development and experimentation with the Trieste. This was after the Trieste went on a 10,168 foot dive in the Mediterranean off the coast of Capri Italy.

The Trieste was given its name after the city it was built in, which was on the border between Italy and Yugoslavia. The deep sea submersible vehicle has a spherical research and observation room made out of steel. (First Trip to the Deepest Part of the Ocean) This room was located at the bottom of the Trieste with a window for observation. The rest of the vehicle was mostly made up of compartments such as, two water blast tanks and two gasoline tanks. The gasoline tanks held 130,000 liters. The purpose of the gasoline was to use it for resurfacing from the bottom because it is more buoyant then water, and it is very resistant to the compression that happens during deep sea dives. (bathyscaphe)

On January 20, 1960 The Trieste was transported out into the Pacific Ocean by a tug boat from Guam and was accompanied by a command ship. They were ready for the mission. But before they could achieve their goal they needed to find the deepest part of Challenger Deep in the Marianna's Trench. Since the depth sounder on the ship could not measure the large depths of Challenger Deep, they used TNT explosives.(Strickland) Lighting the fuses and throwing them overboard while counting the seconds until the explosion was picked up by the ships
