The two biographies that I chose to read for the assignment are Harlem’s Little Blackbird by Renee Watson, and Lou Gehrig by David A. Adler. These two biographies are very similar, and very different in so many ways. Harlem’s Little Blackbird is about Florence Mills, who was born in 1896 to parents that were former slaves. At an early age she knew she had a passion to sing, and grew up performing with her sisters who were once called the Trio. Once she branched off on her own, people began to be captured by her dancing and singing, which then led her to Broadway in the 1920’s. It was a rough time for someone of her race to become famous, and she was getting scrutinized wherever she went. She did not give up though. Even though they are written for children, the authors and illustrators did a very good job creating them for anyone to read and get informed about the main characters. I think that the two characters, Florence Mills and Lou Gehrig, were portrayed and positioned really well. As a reader, you really get an understanding of how each character lived, and what struggles they were faced with as they got older, and how they might have overcome them. Florence Mills had to face the reality of racism when all she wanted to do was show what she was passionate about, which was singing and dancing. That didn’t stop her though. She was brave, and did everything she could to get herself noticed. Lou Gehrig on the other hand was one of the best baseball players that lived. He was hardworking, and loved the sport he played. He did not let the disease he got diagnosed with stop him from being apart of the team he was on for 14 years. That is what made everyone love him so much. In the story “In the Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson”, Shirley Temple Wong’s character becomes completely different over the course of the book. In the beginning, she lives in China with her entire clan except for her father, who is in America. Shirley is confident, happy, and not afraid to be herself. She knows her place in her family and that she is not to disrespect any of her elders, though she usually does try to impress everyone, and is very curious. She is very manipulative. When she got in trouble, since she knew that the Matriarch of her clan loves the youngest grandchild, Precious Coins, she takes him with her to try to soften the punishment. She knows all of the typical ways to do things in China, and fits in with her clan
Crack! Back, back, back the ball goes. Home run! Who hit it? It was Jackie Robinson, the first black baseball player in the major league. Many people would agree Jackie was one of the best players to ever swing a bat. However, he faced many difficulties on his journey to becoming a professional baseball player. Without Jackie playing in the pros, baseball and civil rights wouldn’t be the way it is today. Baseball may have taken a long time to not be made up of mainly white players. Jackie was a beacon of hope to black people in the fact that they could compete and succeed in a white man’s sport.
After the Civil War, African Americans encountered great discrimination and suffering. During this era, two influential leaders emerged from different philosophical camps. Brooker T. Washignton of Virginia and William Edward Burghardt Dubois of Massachusetts proposed, different means to improve African Americans’ conditions. These men had a common goal to enrich the black community. However, the methods they advocated to reach these goals significantly differed.
To the average person, in the average American community, Jackie Robinson was just what the sports pages said he was, no more, no less. He was the first Negro to play baseball in the major leagues. Everybody knew that, but to see the real Jackie Robinson, you must de-emphasize him as a ball player and emphasize him as a civil rights leader. That part drops out, that which people forget. From his early army days, until well after his baseball days, Robinson had fought to achieve equality among whites and blacks. "Jackie acted out the philosophy of nonviolence of Martin Luther King Jr., before the future civil rights leader had thought of applying it to the problem of segregation in America"(Weidhorn 93). Robinson was an avid member of the NAACP and helped recruit members because of his fame from baseball. Jackie had leadership qualities and the courage to fight for his beliefs. Unwilling to accept the racism he had run into all his life, he had a strong need to be accepted at his true worth as a first-class citizen. Robinson was someone who would work for a cause - that of blacks and of America - as well as for himself and his team.
For much of the 20th century, African-American citizens had been disenfranchised throughout the South and the entire United States, they were regarded as inferior second-class citizens. Despite efforts to integrate society, the political and economic systems were meant to continue the cycle of oppression against African-Americans, throughout the south and indirectly yet ever present in the north. These laws of segregation, otherwise knows as Jim Crow laws, applied to almost every aspect of southern American society, including sports. During this time period, African-American athletes had to resort to second class organizational leagues to play in, this included the famous baseball player Jackie Robinson. We can see that African Americans were still struggling for equality even after the emancipation and the abolishment of slavery. They still did not get the equal rights and opportunities compared to whites. This had been reflected in the first essay in Du Bois’s book with a title Of Our Spiritual Strivings that indicates blacks were denied the opportunity that were available to the whites even after emancipation. During the days of Jim Crow, people of color received unfair treatment from almost all aspects of their lives. As far as biographical stories go, this one is particularly informative. Having included numerous facts that reveal Florence Price’s remarkable life and her extraordinary accomplishments, Jackson makes you yearn for more. This biography has more than one could ask for. Because this biography is quite a bit longer than any of the others, I found that there is really nothing missing from it. It contains personal stories, actual quotes, real life occurrences reported by her own daughter, facts about her prize winning music, relations with others, and how she is to be remembered. Compared to other biographies I read about Florence, this one is by far the most complete. It is clear to me that Jackson did a tremendous amount of research on Florence and her family, and looked deep into finding out the most prominent facts about her life in order to write this biography. To make this biography work, Jackson acknowledged every aspect of what is known to be included in a good quality biography, mold[ing] complex biographical facts—birth and death, education, ambition, conflict, milieu, work, relationship, accident—… making sure she did not miss a thing.
Collecting the Harlem Riots It would have been better to have left the plate glass as it had been and the goods lying in the stores. It would have been better, but it would have also been intolerable, for Harlem needed something to smash. This quote by James Baldwin pertains to his thoughts on the Harlem Riots of 1943. A copy of Newsweek from August 9, 1943 described the riot in great detail,?Within a half hour Harlem?s hoodlums were on the march.
Both readings are about African American Men who are being discriminated against. Frederick Douglass was born 1817 and died 1895. His story is about his journey as a slave in Maryland. When Douglass was put into slavery, he was with a mistress who had never owned a slave before, so it was all very new to her. Mrs. Hugh Auld helped teach Douglass how to read and write, but her husband found out and told her that she should not, for it was dangerous and unlawful (125). Although Mrs. Hugh Auld stopped teaching Douglass, he knew enough to start his own education and eventually that lead him to freedom. Through all of Douglass?s teachings, he realized that slavery had a negative effect on him. Although his education was obviously good for him, he had his doubts. Before he was naive to all that was going on around him and what he was involved in. He obviously knew that he did not want to be a slave, but he did not know all of the information around and involving it. As his education grew, so did his anger and resentment for this world that...
Like the Blues women, Simone expands ideas pertaining to self-expression, identity and beauty as they relate to black women. She does this by embracing what is definitively African American and connecting that to a historical context. By doing so, she is the embodiment of a political statement. In Langston Hughes’ poem, the author gives us vivid examples of how dreams get lost in the weariness of everyday life. The author uses words like dry, fester, rot, and stink, to give us a picture of how something that was originally intended for good, could end up in defeat. Throughout the play, I was able to feel how each character seemed to have their dreams that fell apart as the story went on. I believe the central theme of the play has everything to do with the pain each character goes thru after losing control of the plans they had in mind. I will attempt to break down each character’s dream and how they each fell apart as the play went on.
