Contrasting Ender’s Game: The Movie and the Book Ender’s Game is all about adults manipulating children’s minds and children training to fight aliens, what else is there to know? In my English class we recently read the book and watched the movie Ender’s Game. In Ender’s Game there is a boy named Ender who goes to battle school. At battle school Ender is younger and smaller than most of the children there, he is bullied and treated very badly. However, he soon finds that he is smarter than everyone else and excels to command school. While he is at command school he plays the simulator and attempts to defeat what he thinks is his teacher, but is actually the aliens, known as buggers. Although, he was in the book and the movie he didn’t have as much of an effect in the movie than the book. Peter was extremely mean to Ender and bullied him all the time. In the beginning of the book Peter bullied Ender very badly, but later in the middle of the night he was going back to bed when he thought Ender was sleeping, and apologized for being so mean to him and even cried. In the movie, Peter showed no sign of remorse for his actions against Ender. Also, in the book there were two characters named Locke and Demosthenes. These characters were actually just Valentine, Ender’s sister, and Peter who were secretly using the nets to communicate politically. However, Locke and Demosthenes did not even exist as characters in the movie Ender’s Game. Another difference between the book and the movie is about the battles. While Ender was in battle school he was in a platoon that contained an army. The army’s would have battles all the time and the book went into great detail of many of these battles. In the movie there was only one battle scene other than Ender defeating the buggers. Lastly, in the book Ender’s sister Valentine went to the planet Eros with Ender after he returned to Earth, but in the movie Ender didn’t even return to Earth and Valentine stayed on Earth instead going with Ender in search of new

Introduction: Ender is one of the main characters in this book, Ender is intelligent on and off the battlefield he is the youngest in the salamander army but he is more skillful than anyone else in the army. The book Ender’s game is written by Dr son Scott Card, This book was the Hugo and Nebula winner.
Ender is selected to go to Battle School in space because of the actions he has displayed against a bully after a device known as a monitor, which allows the leaders of the I.F. to watch and hear everything Ender perceives. Although Ender’s conception was predetermined (in this time period, families are only allowed to have two children unless stated by the government which is why Ender is often called a “Third”), he had to display the correct characteristics to be selected. Ender’s siblings, Peter and Valentine also wore the monitor, but neither wore it as long nor was selected because Peter was too cruel and Valentine was too mild. Once Ender arrives, he makes a couple new friends from the other selected children, including a boy named Alai. When Ender is alone, he plays a mind game and progresses farther than anyone has before so out of the blue, Ender becomes promoted to a group called Salamander Army, where he befriends the only girl, Petra Arkanian, at Battle School. After years of being monitored by government officials, Ender Wiggins, the main character of Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game, finds himself completely alone. The loneliness set's in as he finds himself in a new school, away from the watchful eyes of the government and bared to the world. He is a Third. This feeling of being a third makes Ender feel even more isolated, "It was not his fault he was a Third. It was the government's idea, they were the ones who authorized it - how else could a Third like Ender have got into school?" (Card 5). There was no one there to keep the bullies away now. Although he never really liked the monitor, he now found himself alone and missing the advent ages of having it on and knowing that someone, somewhere was always with him and watching him. At battle school, Ender knows that he will be isolated from the other students. Colonel Graff tells the other students of Ender and how superior his talents and intelligence is compared to the rest of the group. The other students don't like Ender and don't trust him. Throughout battle school, Ender is kept from his family and isolated from other children.
Another event that Ender had to finish that had been started before him was his conflict with Stilson on the bus to Battleschool. Stilson and his friends make fun of Ender by calling him a ‘Third’ and they do not let him get to his seat on the bus. Stilson calls Ender names and summons his friends to hold Ender back because he had tried to grab Stilson’s arm in defense of himself.
After much internal debate Ender decides to go to battle school and leave home. He knows he won’t see his family until he is at least 12 but most likely he will have to wait until he is 16. When Ender is inside the ship on the way to battle school, the adults start their manipulation game. Graff calls out Ender as the only one who will save mankind, making the other kids hate Ender and become envious. Ender already lost the chance at having a normal childhood when he was born a third, but he was also considered to be the chosen one to save mankind from the very beginning. The manipulation of Ender is shown through the book and the children at the school either take part in his abuse or ignore the adults who cause it. Through this abusive training tactic Ender becomes the skilled fighter and leader the government wants. Ender gets moved through the program fast. He gets to the command school at age 9, a school no one can go to until they are sixteen. The adults tell him he will be doing simulations to practice the attacks on the buggers, but after the last simulation he finds out he killed the entire bugger species. The novel shows Ender to be morally innocent throughout his story, but he takes on the guilt of xenocide of the buggers. He is shocked at what he did, even when he didn’t know what he’s doing. Ender loses his innocence at this moment. He knew he was being manipulated by the adults throughout his career at the battle schools, but he had no idea he was being manipulated into exterminating a whole race. Throughout the novel, the adults use the children's innocence in order to manipulate them. To begin, the adults cover their true identities, as controlling personnel, by portraying themselves as good people to the children. While Colonel Graff and Anderson are conversing they say, "' I like the kid. I think we're going to screw him up.' 'Of course we are. It's our job. We're the wicked witch. We promise gingerbread, but we eat the little bastards alive'". (Card 10) The adults explicitly state that they use the children's innocence to control them, they display one thing but have an outcome of another. By choosing methods of manipulation that appeal to children, the adults influence the children’s actions as they do things they naturally wouldn’t perform. Furthermore, the adults control every component of the soldier's lives. While reflecting Ender says, "I've spent my life as someone's pawn"(312). The adults choose Ender’s ultimate fate and every other small factor. They have an upper hand in their relationship, hence Ender refers to them as the chess player determining each of his moves. During the book ender plays many battle games, intelligence games, and mind games. It basically turns enders life into a game, or saying life is “Ender's game”. Next, there is the part where Ender destroys the Bugger (alien) army he believes it is just a game. The leaders of the schools tell Ender that it is just a simulation, just a game, but really it ends up he is leading the real armies to beat the buggers. Once again there is a game, Ender's game. Throughout the book it is constantly telling you low key that life is Ender’s game, that he can do whatever. Lastly, one of the mind games ender plays ends up being real in real life. The Command School authorities were justified in how they handled the final evaluation of Ender and his peers. Although their method of tricking Ender’s team into defeating the Buggers was not politically correct, it was extremely effective and lead to success. Ender may have been fit to be a commander due to his killer instinct and intelligence, but he was too young to be mentally ready for such a task. Therefore, the authorities at Command School felt a great need to make the battles seem like a series of tests.

In battle school, out in space, Ender, the young boy is a genius and is taught many tactics to destroy their prime enemy the buggers. He excels in school and battles his way into command school before the required age. There he is told he is battling buggers in simulations or is he? Throughout the novel, Ender is manipulated, bullied, and isolated, which creates many themes and messages. In this novel Ender’s Game the main theme is life is a game. Three characters that best prove this are Ender, Peter, and Bonzo.
In Orson Scott Card’s novel, Enders Game, at the age of six, Ender is chosen by Colonel Graff and the International Fleet to help save mankind from the buggers. However, through his journey, he experiences manipulation and deception from significant figures that surround his life. This deceit from Colonel Graff, Valentine, and Mazor Rackham is focused on defeating the buggers in the Third Invasion.

This story has an up and down of emotional events. The Westing Game book and movie contains many similarities and differences that are worth exploring.
The character Colonel Graff, on purpose tried to keep the students to stay away from Ender. Stated in the book, “Ender’s Game”, on page 31-32 that Colonel Graff said was, “There’s only one boy on this launch with any brains at all, and that is Ender Wiggin. Take a good look at him, little boys. He’s going to be a commander when you’re still in diapers up there”, and also stated on page 32, “ He felt a sharp pain on the top of his head…giggles from behind him…then it became clear. Graff had deliberately caused it. These 2 quotes explain how Colonel Graff tried to isolate Ender by insulting other boys that were also newcomers like Ender and praising Ender that he is the wise one from the others. Therefore, this caused the boys to turn against Ender leaving no one to accept Ender as a friend, making Ender to be independent, instead of relying on others. Also, the character Mazer Rackham, who was Ender’s trainer, also tried to make Ender to not contact with others from face to face. Stated in the book on page 260-261, “He was in the room when Ender awoke in the morning…was an old man, sitting cross-legged on the floor… the door locked…seemed to go on for hours…Mazer Rackham.” This quote explains how the character Mazer Rackham tried to isolate Ender by locking the doors and not letting Ender go out causing Ender to not even meet new people neither new
In the book Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card he introduces Andrew "Ender" Wiggin, the third in a family of child geniuses, is selected by international military forces to save the world from destruction. Before being chosen Ender wears a device called a monitor that allows the heads of the military to see things as Ender does. Ender's brother Peter and his sister Valentine also wore this monitor, although neither was selected, and they didn’t have it for as long as Ender, and Peter hates Ender for this. Peter hates Ender, and even when the monitor is taken out it does nothing to decrease Peter's anger. The same is true of Ender's schoolmates, and he is forced into brutally beating the leader of a gang of bullies in order to protect himself. Although Valentine tries to protect Ender from Peter, he is only saved from his brother when Colonel Graff of the International Fleet comes to take Ender away to Battle School. Ender leaves behind Valentine, who loves him, in order to help save the world from the buggers.
The book, "Being There," is about a man named Chance, who is forced to move out of the house he lived in his whole life and his experience in the outside world. Based on the success of the book, the movie, "Being There," was made. The author of the book, Jerzy Kosinski, also wrote the screenplay for the movie. I think the major difference between the book and the movie is that in the book, we get to read what Chance is feeling and thinking, but in the movie, we only get to see his actions.
