In 1966 one of the greatest songwriters ever, Paul McCartney, wrote a song the would peak at number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100, and was ranked as one of the 150 greatest songs of all time by the Rolling Stones. This song was Eleanor Rigby. 71 years before this one of the greatest American poets, Paul Laurence Dunbar, wrote We Wear the Mask, a poem that would become an embodiment of life lived by many African Americans of the time. Even though 71 years separates these two bodies of work they both explore a common theme. Society sets normalities of how people should feel emotionally and when a person doesn’t feel this way they will do whatever they need to do to appear to fit the societal norm. In the parable, "The Minister's Black Veil", written by Nathaniel Hawthorne. A minister named Parson Hooper decides to wear a black veil for the rest of his life. When he wore it, the only thing on his face you could see was his mouth. The mouth being the only facial feature that people could see made it the only feature that could show his emotions at the time. A smile is a universal sign of happiness, yet, Hoopers smile was described as being sad. “A sad smile gleamed faintly from beneath the black veil, and flickered about his mouth, glimmering as he disappeared.” He had a sad smile, but it also gleamed. For fear of judgment based on appearance, any human being might cover up his sorrows as to not display any signs of weakness. Throughout Dunbar’s poem, the characters reflect upon their perception of the world and ironically accept the world the way it is. Revealing the true nature of the world, Dunbar states, “Why should the world be over-wise, /In counting all our tears and sighs?” (Dunbar 6). The poet insists that everyone need to be more comfortable and open to new ideas while embracing each others uniquenesses defined by strengths and weaknesses. The world was never “over-wise” because people dismiss the idea of helping others in fear of ruining their own reputation. Because of the utter nature of society, citizens have no other option but to wear a mask of apathy and cover up their insecurities. The narrator feels the need to conceal their feelings by “wear[ing] the mask that grins and lies” (Dunbar 1). They use “lies” to cover themselves, but at the same time question why no one seems to care. This contradiction complicates the battle between the world and the individual. The veil is also seen as a blindfold and a trap on the many thousands which live with the veil hiding their true identity, segregated from the whites and confused themselves in biases of themselves. Du Bois’s Souls of Black Folks had helped to life off the veil and show the true paid and sorry which the people of the South had witnessed. Du Bois inclines the people not to live behind the veil but to live above it to better themselves as well as others.
In the poem “Strange Fruit” the author uses many deadly situations to explain the severe pain these human beings were experiencing. “Here is the fruit for the crows to pluck” (Allan 9) is a symbol of even after death African-Americans were still experiencing pain. After one passes away they usually go to peace and God, but these people were left there on the trees lynched for animals like crows to eat them away because no one cared about them. Crows are a symbol of death because they eat rotten, dead, and leftover animals and flesh. Crows can also be symbolic to the Jim Crow Laws that were racial segregation laws targeting a particular race and culture of people. Another symbolic example is “Then the sudden smell of burning flesh” (Allan 8). This quote is so graphic and distasteful to hear people were on purposely being burned to death in gas chambers and in fires. This symbolizes so many different aspects like inhumanity, pain, violence, torment, and misery. Everyone has the right to live and they were killed with no real cause. Similarly, in “We Wear the Mask” the phrase “We wear the mask the grins and lies” (Dunbar 1) embodies the tragic and excruciating truth being covered up with a fake lie. In the mid 1960’s particular people were not allowed to voice or show their emotions, feelings, or ideas because they would be murdered. They basically wore this mask to hide who they really was. The white society saw African American as basically an outsider and as people that were way below them. So many of these people got so a custom to society seeing them in that way that they sort of developed a “double consciousness”. What this mean is that to the world they act a certain way because it the “right” then to do, but at home or places where they can’t be judge they be who they really are. Du Bois states that we should fight back this “Double Consciousness” and just be who we were born to be. Good things come out when we act like the person that we are. We see this a lot during Celia Cruz career. Field Castro was trying to emerge her in this “double consciousness” idea but telling her who she had to be and what to say to the outside world. He wanted to control her very little step but she didn’t give in. The day that she left to Mexico and decided to never return to the island was the first day that she decided to fight back this “double consciousness” idea and just be herself. She didn’t want to do things she wasn’t comfortable, let alone be force to be someone she wasn’t. “We Wear the Mask” by Paul Laurence Dunbar and “Richard Cory” by Edwin Arlington Robinson are two poems that depict how many people hide their feelings from others. The two poems are similar in theme, but are told from different points of view and differ in plot.
It is Du Bois awareness of the veil that gives him the opportunity to step in and out it. He is not imprisoned and blinded by the veil, and writes not just to make black Americans aware of it, but also to give whites the opportunity to look at what they had created in erecting it, and how both races could play part in taking down the veil. The use of spirituals enforces the black Americans journey of striving for better in times of war, or the failed Reconstruction, and in the experience of living on the other side of the color-line, while trying push through it towards better times. The stories within the chapters are punctuated with beautiful and spiritual hymns, personal disclosures, facts, and psychological impacts that racism has imparted on the relationship between black and white Americans. The metaphor of the veil is impressive, and understood as a construct born of the color-line, which in turn created within the black American a double-consciousness. This condition would not allow them to see, or be themselves wholly, as the stereotypical images and beliefs of whites overshadowed them, made them invisible behind the veil. In the story "Battle Royal" the narrator's grandfather tells the family to undermind the whites with "yeses" and "grins", he also instructs them to "agree'em to death and destruction". The grandfather felt that in order to keep the family safe and also hold on to the oppression that scars them everyday, they should put on a mask. Paul Laurence Dunbar’s “We Wear the Mask” is a lyric poem in which the point of attraction, the mask, represents the oppression and sadness held by African Americans in the late 19th century, around the time of slavery. As the poem progresses, Dunbar reveals the façade of the mask, portrayed in the third stanza where the speaker states, “But let the dream be otherwise” (13). The unreal character of the mask has played a significant role in the lives of African Americans, who pretend to put on a smile when they feel sad internally. This occasion, according to Dunbar, is the “debt we pay to human guile," meaning that their sadness is related to them deceiving others. Unlike his other poems, with its prevalent use of black dialect, Dunbar’s “We Wear the Mask” acts as “an apologia (or justification) for the minstrel quality of some of his dialect poems” (Desmet, Hart, and Miller 466).

The purpose of a mask is to hide everything that is wrong by not showing it in the slightest. Not even that makes anything better for the mask user and will NOT solve anything for them. A short-term solution will not solve a long-term problem and can make the situation worse. Characters like Avis in the novel “We Are Called To Rise” use a variety of masks to hide the variety of problems in their lives. In the novel, Laura McBride uses Avis and their use of an emotional avoidance mask to demonstrate that she purposely hides how she really feels by showing no strength or emotion.
