“ I think the future deserves our faith (Green 296).” Both Green and Dickinson portray how important it is to live in the moment. Dickinson creates this theme in line 1 and 2, “ Forever- is composed of nows- ‘Tis not a different time.” Green portrays this on page 33, “And now life has become the future.” However, Dickinson addresses this theme by using Personification, but Green uses more imagery in his writing. Living in the moment is one of many themes in the novel Paper Towns by Green, and Forever is Composed of Nows by Dickinson. For example, when Dickinson says the allusion, “ From Anno Dominos (Dickinson line 12).” This means the time period after Christ. She includes this to tell us that we all are the same, and we cannot live our lives by looking at the future or the past. However, Green uses a little more metaphors in his writing. For instance, he writes, “ All those paper people living in their paper house, burning the future to stay warm (Green 57).” Green is stating that those people who believe everything is going to be ok are looking at the future rather than the present. In the poem she states, “Let months dissolve in further months- And years- exhale in years (Dickinson line 7 and 8).” This quote is explaining how fast time can go bye, and if you live your life looking at what to come you’re going to miss what’s going on right now. Green doesn’t use personification like Dickinson does. For instance, Green says, “ The clock was always punishing, but I feel like I was closer to unravelling the knot (Green 200).” This meaning he felt like time had been going against him the whole time, but he had never felt so close to her.
