Once when I was in Chicago, with a friend and his family, my friend and I were both waiting for his parents to come out of the hotel. Then a man came up to us and asked if we can help him get his kid out of a trapped car in a McDonald's parking lot. We both told him no and that we were waiting for his parents. The story shows how my friend and I used our intelligence to know not to go with this guy. In which could’ve been a dangerous for both my friend and I; but many books show off their character's intelligence in even worse or more dangerous situations. Day from the book Legend and the IRA sniper in “The Sniper” both show their intelligence through them being in dangerous situations.
Firstly, the IRA sniper is intelligent by patching

himself up and and tricking the enemy sniper. An example is after being shot by the other sniper in his good arm(dominant arm) “He broke the neck of iodine bottle and let the bitter fluid drip into the wound….He placed the cotton ball wadding over the wound and wrapped the dressing over it¨(O'Flaherty 3). While in a sniper battle on rooftops, in Dublin, Ireland, the IRA sniper is shot after revealing his position. After finally realizing that he has just been shot in the arm, he quickly went for his medical supplies to patch up his wounds. This show off his intelligence by that he knew what to do whenever he shot in the midst of battle. Another example of the sniper is, when he devised a plan to kill the other sniper by losing his cap and rifle is “His ruse had succeeded. The other sniper, seeing the cap and rifle fall, thought that he killed his man¨(O'Flaherty 3). To trick the other sniper the other sniper put his cap on his rifle showed it and waited for the shot. He then faked his own death and waited for the other sniper to show himself. Now having a chance to kill his wits show off his intelligence. He was able to use his intelligence to heal his own wound and trick the other sniper to kill him. Secondly, Day is shows off his intelligence by finding a escape route and leaving no traces behind.
The first example is, when Day is at a military protected hospital and is in a need of an escape route “My eyes jump to the tiny windows in the stairwell’s plaster walls” (Lu 30). In this situation, Day has broken into a hospital ,with military protection, for cures for the plague, a unknown disease in the book, to give his family; but it did not go as plan. Day is now running away from military police while also looking for a escape route. Then finding a window he is willing to take his chances and jumps. By being able to think on his feet, Day is showing off his intelligence by finding an escape route. Another example is when Day has escaped the hospital and is in the sewage system and the military police are on the scene ”If he has any sense, he’ll have taken half a dozen turns down there and done it in sewage water too. He wouldn’t have touched the walls”(Lu 44). After Day has made his escape the military police see’s he has thought of everything to make sure he wasn’t followed. Even though he was badly hurt and wounded Day showed off his intelligents be leaving no trace behind. Day is intelligent by how he was able to find a escape route and leave no traces left
behind. Finally, out of both Day and the IRA sniper, Day is the more intelligent one out of the two. A example of how Day is more intelligent is when he sling shotted a flaming gasoline ice ball into a police barracks “There was, after all, no evidence. I had committed my first perfect crime”(Lu 22). When Day was just seven years old he came up with a plan that would burn down a whole building. Not only to mention that it left no evidence behind to get him in trouble. It also proves at a young age how intelligent he was compared to the IRA sniper. This shows that Day is more intelligent than the IRA sniper by how he thought of a plan that felt no evidence link back to. Day from Legend and the IRA sniper from “The Sniper” show how intelligent they are by using their intelligence to get out of tough situations. Firstly, the IRA sniper shows off his intelligence by being able to heal himself and make a plan to kill the other sniper. Secondly, Day showed off his intelligence by finding a escape route and leaving no traces of where he went behind. Finally, Day showed off how much more intelligent he is by creating the perfect crime when he was seven and left no evidence. By people knowing what to do in tough situations, know what to do, or how to do something that will protect them/others can show off how intelligent they truly are. Days intelligence showed how he can find escape and leaving no traces, when the IRA sniper showed his intelligence by patching himself up and make a plan to kill the other sniper.

John Allen Muhammad and Lee Boyd Malvo are two murderers that are known as the Beltway Sniper. Muhammad and Malvo killings are known to be random, which categorizes their killings as a killing spree. During the duration of their killing spree, they caused major panic throughout the United States. This notorious shootings that terrorized the United States took place in 2002. The shootings ended up taking the lives of 10 individuals and injuring 3 others (Blades, 2005, para.1). The shooting at the time it took place is considered unique because their weapon of choice to carry out their plan was a sniper rifle. What is unique about this case is that investigators and criminal theorist
In “Hidden Intellectualism,” Gerald Graff pens an impressive argument wrought from personal experience, wisdom and heart. In his essay, Graff argues that street smarts have intellectual potential. A simple gem of wisdom, yet one that remains hidden beneath a sea of academic tradition. However, Graff navigates the reader through this ponderous sea with near perfection.
at all it made the clip a lot more tedious for me anyway. I feel the
Saving Private Ryan starts out on June 6, 1944, which marks the beginning of the invasion of Normandy, in World War II. As learned early on four brothers from the Ryan family all go out to serve the United States, and in action three of the four are killed. This story follows a group of soldiers on their journey as they search for, the last surviving of the Ryan brothers, Private First Class James Ryan, and send him home. World War II is the deadliest and most extensive war in history that lasted six years. In World War II there were battles fought and rescue missions that took place, and the US Military showed their bravery as they went in to fight for our country.
In “Hidden Intellectualism”, author and professor Gerald Graff describes his idea of what book smarts and streets smarts actually are. He details how new ideas can help to teach and build our educational system into something great and that perhaps street smarts students could be the factor that traditional education is missing that could make it great.
...est high school students in America” (Gladwell 82). It was shocking to learn that all the Nobel Prize in Medicine winners did not all come from the most prestigious schools. Also, in the third chapter I notices some aspects that were highly relatable to me. My life relates to subjects included in chapter three because I am a student. It is interesting and helpful to learn that one does not need the highest IQ to succeed in today’s world. This is how I relate to chapter three. The third chapter in Outlier by Malcolm Gladwell had striking information that stated that IQs do not always determine who will be successful, and I can relate to the information in the chapter because I am student who has thought about my IQ before.
“Hidden Intellectualism” written by Gerald Graff, is a compelling essay that presents the contradicting sides of “book smarts” and “street smarts” and how these terms tied in to Graff’s life growing up. Graff felt like the school was at fault that the children with more “street smarts” were marked with the reputation of being inadequate in the classroom. Instead of promoting the knowledge of dating, cars, or social cues, the educational system deemed them unnecessary. Gerald Graff thought that “street smarts” could help people with academics. In his essay, Graff confessed that despite his success as an “intellect” now, he was the exact opposite until college. Where he grew up in Chicago, Illinois, intelligence was looked down upon around peers
"There are wounds that never show on the body that are deeper and more hurtful thananything that bleeds. Don 't wait until you break. - Laurell Hamilton" This is oftentimes the sentiment felt by soldiers who have served in active duty and have been witnesses to tragedies that leave them emotionally scarred. The Clint Eastwood directed film, American Sniper is amovie that features the real life tragedy of American soldier, Chris Kyle, who served in theUnited States military as a Navy Seal, which is an elite group (Kenny, 2014 and Treitschke,2015). His story is unique in that he himself suffered from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder(PTSD), but as he worked to recover, he valiantly served again by helping fellow soldiers withPTSD ("Chris Kyle," 2013), and was senselessly gunned
With these three examples helped prove that, though dealt certain mental deficiencies, savants whether fictional or real still excel in some aspect of their lives. Being a shrimp boat captain, a Vegas card shark, or a famous artist these three men showed that they were worth more than what others estimated about them. It also proves that no matter what you are given in life there is always a way to achieve more. Mrs. Evelyn Clemons sums it up as she states
“The Sniper” is a short story written by Liam O’Flaherty that was released on January 12, 1923 in an issue of a weekly socialist publication, called The New Leader. It’s a very easy read with a surprise twist at the end that I felt complimented what the author was trying to convey about civil wars. I enjoyed reading this story because of its militaristic and subtle political theme. It shows what humans are when conflict stirs. A huge downside to civil war is brought to the surface with this story’s surprise ending. I would recommend reading this because I believe it really shows the true nature behind wars and the effect it can have upon humans involved in wars. Being threatened for your life, a human can overcome unsurmountable feats with critical thinking and wit, but it’s not without its downfalls as this story shows.
When reading a novel or watching a movie, the audience often looks for a guiding light; a character that steps up to take the lead when all hope is lost. It is not uncommon for that beacon of hope to be a complete stereotype, all too often, the hero of the day is a strong, virile, ruggedly handsome man, but what if he was not? What if he was just an average man, or not even a man at all, but a woman or a child? When reading fiction, the imagination is allowed to run wild, painting vivid pictures interwoven with personal life experiences, relatable to the characters in the novels and to one’s own life experiences. The most memorable content of both The Road, by Cormac McCarthy, and World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War, by Max Brooks, leaves a lasting impression due to strong lead characters, their resolve to survive, no matter what obstacles may wind up in their paths, and the simple truth that they are human and flawed, but still resilient and willing to push forward as an example to others, both in the novel and in the target audience.
Verbal Intelligence; Non-verbal Intelligence; Concrete Reasoning; and Abstract Reasoning are several of the mental abilities that have been identified by psychologists (Santrock, 2013). Spearman’s thoughts were that intelligence is general cognitive ability that can be numerically expressed and measured.
It was April 5, 2006 a boy named Tom had attended a school out the outskirts of his little town named Millet and this town had a little population of 1,650 people but along with this was a odd history of the town being that it was a battle field from long ago. This particluar day Tom was at the school early to help his teacher with a class project that was for a class parade, Tom had asked his teacher for a bathroom break when he left the room and started down the long dark hall he noticed a man dressed in a nice uniform standing at attention with his hands to his side the closer Tom got to the soldier, the soldier would become more tranparent and when Tom got to the exact spot where the soldier was standing he smelt a fowl sour smelling oder.
Intelligence is the aggregate or global capacity of the individual to act purposefully, to think rationally, and to deal effectively with his environment.’ (Wechsler, 1944, p. 3)
