While contrasting with her sisters, Belle is the light, and her sisters are the darkness. Apparently, Belle's patience and unsophisticated personalities make her become the light, and on the other hand, her sisters' jealousy and vanity are the darkness. Nevertheless, while contrasting with the beast, regardless of the appearance, the beast is the light, his kindness and patience, he had not give up even though Belle rejected him every day. As a morality tale, the darkness is the ugliness of inner mind, such as jealousy and vanity, and the light would be the kindness and the
virtuousness.
In the story Sonny's Blues the author, James Baldwin, uses the image of darkness quite frequently. He uses it first when the older brother (main character) talks about his younger brother Sonny. He says that when Sonny was younger his face was bright and open. He said that he didn't want to believe that he would ever see his "brother going down, coming to nothing, all that light in his face gone out." Meaning he had gone from good (clean and innocent) to bad ( giving into drugs like so many of the other young people).
Yet as we journey from the dark to the light in Aeschylus, we cannot leave the dark behind – the darkness breeds the light.
The Light vs Darkness archetype, can be found in many other works of literature and movies, which show its overwhelming significance. Indeed, it is possible to see light vs dark in many piece of British literature. For example in the classic Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen. Sense and Sensibility is a book first published in 1811 so it is not the newest example but it is still 200 years after the first performance of Romeo and Juliet. Sense and Sensibility is a book about these two sisters Elinor, the eldest one and Marianne Dashwood. During the book these two sister face many challenges that reveal the different way they think and act in certain situations. Elinor acts more based on her mind and what should be done instead on what she
The use of light and dark motifs by Mulisch explains many reactions of Anton when encountered with problems of his past. Perception of darkness Anton Steinwijk, the main character, experiences such assault by soldiers during the Occupation and his family being shot by them. His desire to leave what has happened to him in the past has been influenced thoroughly by some of the people he encounters as well as the trauma. Light and darkness symbolizes Anton's sense perception as well as moral issues conveyed by people he met, which influences him observing the war and his past years of life, and the desire to leave the past behind and move on.
It can be argued that the theme of light VS darkness is used to good
The contrast of light and dark begins with the description and characterization of the apparently angelic [comment4] Sheppard, and continues with the introduction of the obscure and ominous Rufus Johnson. O'Connor is not pretentious in her description and development of either character. Sheppard's white hair and "halo" are obvious references to his protagonistic status as the story's do-gooder [comment5] (Norton 371). The narrator continues on by lauding his charitable contribution to the community as a counselor and weekend volunteer for "boys no one else cared about" (372). The reader's only initial clue toward Sheppard's self-righteous mania is his deliberate, guilt-implying sermon towards Norton, his disconcerted and doomed son. It is n...
The dark is seen as a mask that can disguise and hide, this is foreshadowed when King Duncan at the announcement of his successor says; ‘but signs of nobleness, like stars, shall s...
Throughout Macbeth there are many examples of light verses dark imagery. The lightness represents peace and the darkness represents disastrous events or death. In the beginning of the play, the character Macbeth was a friendly guy that could only hurt who deserved it. He starts out with a sense of innocence and only killed traitors of the king. But, later she becomes desirous and in order to take King Duncan’s place he murders him. This was the turning point for him and he became a killing machine. Lady Macbeth started as a character of darkness; she yearned for power and did not want to express any emotion. Later on she became guilty and started sleep walking and she committed suicide. In the beginning of the play all of the murderers were committed with a sense of darkness. However, this changes once three murderers kill Banquo in presence of lightness.
"Darkness? I was puzzled. I thought, Darkness is the last thing that religion is. Religion is light. Was he testing me?'" (Martel 27). In the book Life of Pi by Yann Martel, the contrast between light and dark is being interpreted in different ways, depending on the individuals opinion. It is up to them whether or not to find the light or darkness within their aspects. With a comparison between two opposite views, Martel brought to the reader a continuous contrast between the motif of light vs. dark. This motif conveys the theme of good and immoral within life.
“I like the darkness, there is something to the feeling of not seeing the colour of things as they appear, but as they truly are. There’s something about the unknown, the quiet the cold. There is something unspoken about the dark, something I can never quite put words to, something terrifying yet stunning. I have found so much comfort in the dark, and twice as many horrors in the light,” said poet Victoria Archer. Salman Rushdie explores the idea of darkness holding beauty in his book Haroun and the Sea of Stories. In the book a young boy named Haroun goes on an adventure from his home in a sad city, to the moon called Kahani. Haroun goes to have his father’s story tap reconnected after it had been disconnected by a Water Genie named Iff. Haroun
Good and evil are symbolized by light and darkness in the play Macbeth, by William Shakespeare. When there is peace and good, Shakespeare mentions light; whether if it is the sun shining brightly or merely a candle giving light. On the other hand, when there is evil and disorder, he mentions darkness; a shadow or a horrible thunderstorm. Witches are known for evil, chaos, and conflict. Since Witches are known to be evil, whenever they appear, the weather is usually horrible. Shakespeare utilizes light and darkness in order to portray when good or evil will take place.
In this thematic essay, I’ll be going over John’s theme of light and dark in John 1:4-5, and possibly touch on other sections of John containing the light and darkness theme, such as John 3:19; John 8:12; and John 12:35, 46. I will also give this an interesting twist to keep this essay interesting by giving some comparisons with the Disney Movie, Beauty and the Beast.
Light, unlike in A Christmas Carol, is not necessarily virtuous in Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness. The narrator is Nellie, and beginning at sunset, Marlow suddenly starts, “And this also has been one of the dark places of the earth,” (pg. 2, para. 3. 5) while stranded on the flooded Thames River. He tells about his dark journey to the heart of darkness (outside the center of Africa). He takes over another person’s responsibility to visit the Interior and meets two women knitting black yarn.
There are many classic stories that have been made and created throughout the years, but even through the large gaps in time periods there are some similarities and some things that set the different stories apart. Romeo and Juliet as well as Beauty and the Beast were both love stories that had two people that had differences that caused their relationships to have some turmoil between the way they can live and be together. In Romeo and Juliet both of them came from a family that has had previous troubles and problems so they have had conflict for the longest time. The same for Beauty and the Beast the “Beast” had a spell put on him that caused him to be viewed as a monster and everyone exiled him from their villages for fear that he would
The "Heart of Darkness," written by Joseph Conrad in 1899 as a short story, is about two men who face their own identities as what they consider to be civilized Europeans and the struggle to not to abandon their themselves and their morality once they venture into the "darkness." The use of "darkness" is in the book's title and in throughout the story and takes on a number of meanings that are not easily understood until the story progresses. As you read the story you realize that the meaning of "darkness" is not something that is constant but changes depending on the context it used.
