Some of the earliest written American literature derived from the Age of Exploration. The explorers that founded the Americas in the name of Europe documented their findings. Soon after, Puritans fled to the new world seeking a land of the free. Explorer literature mainly came in the form of letters and narratives, whereas Puritan literature came in the form of sermons, journals and narratives. Both literatures came in the first person view, and just as explorers sent letters back to kingdoms in Europe, many puritans sent letters home to family in Europe. Puritans wrote to document life, or as religious writings. In Anne Bradstreets poem, To My Dear Husband, she confesses and illustrates her love for her husband; “Then while we live, in love let’s so preserve That when we live no more, we may live forever.” (Bradstreet, PG 120) This poem was humble and loving, but also showed religious aspects by saying “we may live forever.” Both Puritans and explorers stood with a strong backbone of religion. They both also wrote about a new land that was strange and scary. In Christopher Columbus’ “Letter to Isabella and Ferdinand”, he spoke of the strange and scary events that took place in the new world; “….I was made a prisoner and with two brothers thrown into a ship, laden with feathers, stripped to the skin, very ill-treated…..”(Columbus, PG 27) Just as Columbus has spoken of the fear and awe felt in the new world, in the story From The Wonders of an Invisible World, Cotton Mather also recalls the fear of the new world in his settlement.
