William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is the classic story of two families, the Montague’s and Capulet’s who have an age old feud. Two children of the families, Juliet Capulet and Romeo Montague, meet and fall in love. The feud of their families encourages them to keep their relationship secret. They get married without telling anyone, but their family feud gets in the way. Juliet’s cousin, Tybalt, and Romeo’s friend, Mercutio, get into a sword fight and Mercutio is killed. Romeo kills Tybalt for revenge and is banished from Verona. Juliet and Friar Laurence come up with a plan to fake her death and get her out of Verona to be with Romeo, but Romeo does not receive the message of the plan and sneaks into Juliet’s tomb and kills himself. Upon waking, Juliet sees dead Romeo and kills herself also. This tragic ending is displayed in two very different ways by Baz Luhrmann (1996) and Franco Zeffirelli (1968). The death scene in Luhrmann’s version better portrays the intensity and emotion of the moment using script changes, setting, and music/sound.
Luhrmann’s script better focuses on the emotion and intensity by only keeping or changing things that contribute to how Romeo and Juliet feel. Contrary to Shakespeare’s original play, Luhrmann did not include minor characters like Paris or Friar Laurence, which allows us to give all our attention to Romeo and Juliet’s final moment. This way we are not distracted by other things happening in the scene and can instead appreciate the emotional scene. Luhrmann kept the line, “Tempt not a desperate man,” which coupled with the scene around Romeo and great acting the simple line showcases the desperation Romeo feels in his need to be with Juliet as he dies. ...d. The lack of sound eliminates all potential for intensity in the moment. As Romeo sees Juliet we hear the theme “What Is a Youth” once again and by this time it’s been very overused. The lyrics of the song would fit, but because there are no vocals and the song is starting to just bore us. Zeffirelli’s quiet approach lacks any intensity or suspense for what’s to come. Final there is noise, warning horns and hounds, but as Juliet is about to kill herself it is a mere interruption. To some it may add to the intensity as they are about to be discovered, but to focus on the emotion it would have been better to center on Romeo and Juliet’s final moment.
Both movies have their merits and downfalls overall, but Luhrmann clearly has the better death scene. Using great script edits, setting, and sound effects, Luhrmann created an intense moment filled with emotion.

In conclusion, Lurhmann uses a lot of modern filming techniques to make Romeo and Juliet appeal to a contemporary audience. By relating certain aspects to situations in modern society, it makes the audience understand the ideas behind the original play and he simplifies the complicated old English of Shakespeare by adding exciting and dynamic visuals. Lurhmann tried to create a modern version of Romeo and Juliet and he was completely successful in his aims. Lurhmann defied all odds by making his film appeal to a modern audience and not only is this film very clever, it is a must see for any film lovers.
Zeffirelli’s ultimate goal for his version of Romeo and Juliet was to capture Shakespeare’s original intentions for the play while targeting the teenage audience of his generation. Luhrmann’s intentions were different however; he changed the way an audience looks at Shakespeare’s masterpiece by modernising the props, costumes, and sets. The film transforms the original texts into modern notions, whilst still employing Shakespearean language. Compared to Franco Zeffirelli’s adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, Luhrmann’s picture is easier for a teenage audience to understand and relate to because of his modernisations. Romeo and Juliet is a play written by William Shakespeare, where a boy and a girl fall in love with each other during a party hosted by Juliet’s father, Lord Capulet. The two teenager decide to get marry, despite their family's hate for each other and only meeting each other a few hours ago. However, the Montagues (Romeo’s Parents) and the Capulets end their feud after they discover that their children killed themselves. Romeo and Juliet’s death was caused by Juliet’s parents, Juliet, and Friar Lawrence.
Paramount aspect of the movie and the play, the theme, were the same, and the overall messages in both were the same. For example, one main message in the stories was that love conquers all. This was demonstrated in both the play and the film when Romeo and Juliet kept secretly meeting each other even though they knew it was against their families’ wishes. In one scene of both the movie and the play Romeo and Juliet even got married and died together so that even if they could not be together on earth they would be together in death. Another message you learn from watching the movie and the play was that fighting solves nothing. In the play, when the two feuding families, the Montague’s and the Caplets, find their children dead they resolve their differences and agree to build a gold statue of Romeo and Juliet made out of gold after they state that their fighting only brought suffering. In the movie, although the families didn’t make up, you can infer that it was if the families and not been fighting that Romeo and Juliet would not have killed themselves, because they would not have to meet in secret and have Friar Lawrence devise a complicated plan so they could be together without their parents knowledge .
The 1996 film, tries to show too much emotion, in doing so, it makes the scene weaker, by lessening some important aspects. In this version, Romeo visits Juliet in her tomb, unknowing of her and Friar Lawrence's plan. Juliet is shocked when she awakens to a dying Romeo. On screen, all she can do is stare into his eyes, as he slowly slips from the earth. While this seems to make it more emotional, it adds drama which doesn't have to be present.
