America’s public education is in the process of being changed because groups wish to insert their lifestyle, their wants, and their ideas into the public education system. Public education was created as a systematic method of teaching and training to acquire knowledge with the ability to use knowledge wisely. To quote Benjamin Franklin from Education and Public Health: Natural Partners in Learning for Life; “Nothing can more effectively contribute to the cultivation and improvement of a country with wisdom, riches, strength, virtue, welfare, and happiness of a people than a proper education of the youth.” (qtd. in Smith 1) Education is not just getting prepared for life; it is life itself. By doing this the dread of failure was eliminated; the curriculum was adjusted to match the mental thought power of the average student. Classes were grouped by age, social status rather than by mental preparedness and also allowing classes to advance at their own rate of progress. Traditional education states school is a preparation for life, whereas Progressive Education says school is only a part of life. Teachers have different roles to perform in each type of educating. Progressive Education declares teachers are leaders that guide the students to do their own thinking of a situation through play and social interaction. Traditional Education implies teaching consists of lectures, worksheets to be informative with strict discipline. Students are required to sit and listen while the teacher discusses the text. Progressive Education is driven by inquiry generated by the student and assessed mainly by benchmarks. The contrast is the traditional way that is straight-forward; based solely on correct answers and is grade oriented. The results of both types of education produced controversial dispute. Both approaches produced some failure. However, new and better ideas were tried. The country has gone mainly with Progressive Education with the idea of producing free and original productive citizens contributing to the good of the country. This thought pattern removed all restrictions from the lives of public school students. It gave the teachers the responsibility of developing the curriculum. Teachers are split on which way of educating is the best. According to William Owen, a lifetime teacher, “Under Progressive Education, authoritative sources and control were lost.” He also said “Original thinking came first over textbooks which became second and discipline became a problem.”(14-15, 53-55)
America’s public school system started off very rough, but through the dedication of many hard-working Americans, it was starting to shape into a system that allowed all children, regardless of race, gender, religion, or nation of origin, to have an education.
Many progressives thought that the greatest way to reform society was through its schools. Public education had grown rapidly since the Civil War. Progressives had new ideas about the purpose of education. Progressive educators believed that children should learn best by contributing in activities where they can work on projects and learn at their own rate. I thought this idea was a better way of learning because memorizing methods were really stressful and many people have diverse ways of learning: visual, hearing, hands on, and etc.

All over the world, people have always sought for power, they have struggled to defend their culture; they have worked beyond imaginable to obtain economic prosperity and political freedom. A matter of fact equality is something that nowadays we are still fighting to obtain. Education has always been the key to power. In the twenty-first century education means a way to obtain the American dream, in other words, to achieve success. However, schools were never intended to empower people to think for themselves or to help them succeed. At the beginning of the American school, different groups of people wanted different things to come out of schooling, one of those things was to facilitate reading the bible in the text it states that “Schooling became important as a means of sustaining a well- ordered religious commonwealth” (Spring 22).
Education has always been in existence in one form or another. As each child is born into this world regardless of who or where they are born, life lessons immediately begin. He/she will learn to crawl, walk, and talk by the example and encouragement of others. Although these lessons are basic in the beginning they evolve as the child grows. However, the core learning method of a child does not change. Learning from others, they will watch, listen, and then act for themselves. Thomas Jefferson believed that an education would lead men and women to the ability to be self-governed and become positive contributors to society (Mondale & Patton, 2001). Today, we can see how true this is by the examples of others. Those that are given the opportunity for education are more likely to find jobs and develop skills that not only improve a community, but influence the economic growth of their nation (Ravitch, Cortese, West, Carmichael, Andere, & Munson, 2009, p. 13). On the other hand, if an education is not provided to individuals, they can become a hindrance to that nation’s growth.
Personal Thoughts- Education is a life-long endeavor. Education isn’t restricted to a classroom or confided by the time restraints of the bell. Education can, and does happen anytime and anywhere. Students who attend public schools are certainly becoming well-schooled, but are they becoming well-educated? For example, take politics. Eighty-six percent of public schools in the United States operate on a traditional school calendar, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. Although you can receive the same education at a year round school that you can at a traditional school, traditional schools are better. They are better because traditional schools educate all students, have access to government funds, and have qualified teachers.
Throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, the American educational system has undergone much transition in response to our changing society. Education is a fundamental aspect of any civilized nation. The goal of public education in America is to turn uninformed children into knowledgeable citizens who are fully capable of participating in a society driven by democracy and economics. Students drop out every year by the hundreds of thousands, and those who remain receive a less than satisfactory educational experience due to lack of funding, inadequate teachers, and flawed educational strategies. Americans must improve school funding and increase teacher pay to ensure all students receive quality primary and secondary education as well as reduce remediation and drop out rates through improved learning standards, effective assessment tools, and early-college initiatives that prepare students for college and the workforce.
The American Education System has been a core component to the development of generations since it became a public system in the 1870s. Since then more rules, higher expectations for some, and even lower expectations for others have been added to the original structure. In recent years, many debates have surfaced over whether the American education system is failing. Too few they believe the American Education System is on the right track. Most researchers however have shown statistics that it is in fact slowly declining as new acts and regimens are added. It has been on a downward spiral for years and citizens have been watching it happen, the lack of government funding, acts like the No Child Left behind Act, focus in the wrong places, and the curriculum set up is acting as a deterrent for success.
When you think of education, the thing that probably comes to mind first, is the institution of formal education, i.e., primary, secondary and then higher education. We have this closed perception that education has to be formal, and nothing else. Often times we, as human beings, tend to weigh things too heavily on formal education. We frown upon the fact that if a person doesnt choose to go and become educated in the traditional way, they wont be able to make something of themselves in their lives. Personally, I strongly disagree. As Jon Spayed, Learning in the Key of Life, put it, there are many ways to become an educated American, as there are Americans (Spayde 63).
Throughout the course of time, teaching, scores, and curriculum have changed to where education is mainly about “being okay” and never about actually improving; and abundant amount of people hold the theory that the government is well aware of this fact and has contributed to the continual downfall of American education in an effort to systematically decrease the competency and literacy of the American population, making them easier to manipulate and allowing the government to achieve increasingly greater power and control over the American population; as a result, Americans are being submerged in a culture that has encouraged them to become more complacent and less interested in bettering themselves which has allowed the government this power that continues to grow.
