The Truman Show and “The Allegory of the Cave” are both examples of what people see, is the only reality they know. In Plato's allegory, it tells a story about prisoners. They are all chained up facing a cave wall. There is a fire behind them that causes shadows. Since these people have never been outside the cave, they believe that this is their reality. The cave also doubled as a pathway. Animals and people would pass by every day. The fire projected the shadows of the people and animals onto the cave wall. The prisoners actually believed that the shadows were real. One day one of the prisoners was freed from the cave. They were able to see the world around them for what it really was. Confused and amazed the freed prisoner came back to untie
everyone else. They did not want to leave thought. The cave was the only thing the prisoners had known. People are afraid of the unknown. They would rather spend their whole lives locked away.

The cave can be seen as a permanent chain or an opportunity for change.
What is reality? An enduring question, philosophers have struggled to identify its definition and basic concept since the beginning of time. Plato, in his provocative essay, The Cave, used symbols and images to ridicule and explain how humanity easily justifies their current reality while showing us that true wisdom and enlightenment lies outside this fabricated version of reality. If he were alive in modern times, he would find society unchanged; still uneducated and silently trapped in our own hallucination of reality with only the glimmer of educational paths available. The balance of utopia, power, and the good life has been challenged throughout history and been shown in different stories, such as The Truman Show and Animal Farm. This balance is tough to achieve, and this is shown numerous times throughout both The Truman Show and Animal farm. Power, which is the ability to act in a particular way, is shown to be easily corrupted, utopia, which is a perfect society, is proved to be near impossible to achieve, and the good life, which is the life someone would want to live, is shown by different people at different times.

In Plato’s “Allegory of the Cave”, a group of prisoners are trapped in a cave for the entirety of their lives, unable to look at anything but the shadows cast on the walls. Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 depicts an eerily similar scenario, in which firemen are repurposed as book-burners instead of firefighters in order to keep its people ignorant and unquestioning of the world around them, only vacantly caring about what is on their televisions. Imagine living through life completely bound and facing a reality that doesn’t even exist. The prisoners in Plato’s “Allegory of the Cave” are blind from true reality as well as the people in the movie “The Matrix” written and directed by the Wachowski brothers. They are given false images and they accept what their senses are telling them, and they believe what they are experiencing is all that really exists. Plato the ancient Greek philosopher wrote “The Allegory of the Cave”, to explain the process of enlightenment and what true reality may be. In the movie “The Matrix”, Neo (the main character) was born into a world of illusions called the matrix. His true reality is being controlled by the puppet- handlers called the machines who use the human body as a source of energy. In the movie, Neo, finds and alternate reality and he has to go on a journey to discover himself and what is around him. Much like “The Allegory of the Cave” the prisoners in a dark underground cave, who are chained to the wall, have a view of reality solely based upon this limited view of the cave which is but a poor copy of the real world. Both the prisoners of the cave, and Neo from the Matrix, have to transcend on the path of ‘enlightenment’ to know the truth of their own worlds.
The Allegory of the Cave has many parallels with The Truman Show. Initially, Truman is trapped in his own “cave”; a film set or fictional island known as Seahaven. Truman’s journey or ascension into the real world and into knowledge is similar to that of Plato’s cave dweller. In this paper, I will discuss these similarities along with the very intent of both of these works whose purpose is for us to question our own reality.
This is the case for both Plato’s Allegory of The Cave and The Truman Show. Both characters are kept from the real world and their thinking is influenced by their surroundings, which can trick them into believing something else. This is where the acceptance of reality comes in. The characters are brought up to believe whatever someone else makes them believe, and they are unexposed to the real world. The Truman Show and Plato’s Allegory of the Cave have more similarities than differences. The similarities are the characters and symbols, and the difference between the two is the setting. Both characters are trapped inside a “fake reality”, which of what they perceive to be real. Another similarity is the symbols that are present throughout both pieces. The symbol for Plato’s Allegory of the Cave is the chains that hold the prisoners inside the cave, and in The Truman Show its Truman’s fear of water. What are the issues of watching and voyeurism in film? The intention of this essay is to discuss both films (The Truman Show, 1998 and Rear Window, 1954) alongside established theoretical criticism (Laura Mulvey and Norman K. Denzin) in an attempt to demonstrate how the issues of watching and voyeurism, as seen in todays mainstream Hollywood cinema, both engages and entices the spectator and to look at how the definition of the voyeur has changed. Before entering into a discussion about voyeurism in Rear Window and The Truman Show, an understanding of what is meant by ‘the dynamics of voyeurism’ in film must be attempted. The dictionary definition of a voyeur is: (1) a person who gains sexual pleasure from watching others when they are naked or engage in sexual activity, and/or (2) a person who enjoys seeing pain or distress of others. Voyeurism is initially noted for the investigation of the woman, demystifying her mystery, however, I think this definition is a small interpretation of the word voyeur. So the intention of this essay is to explore further the meaning of voyeurism by looking at two films adjacent to, two critics with conflicting opinions of what voyeurism is represented by in film. But to understand what voyeurism means we need to look at the cinematic gaze and two types of looks; scopophilia and narcissism.
The human mind is the greatest tool, which is able to give humans ideas, thoughts and the ability to form speech. Yet, there is still something out there that the human mind cannot fathom, something that is bigger than anything humans want to know. The mind can be compared to a cage, in that sense of being limited to knowledge and finding out what else is out there. Once the mind is released and is open to new ideas, humans can understand what is real and what is not real. This concept was shown in The Matrix and The Allegory of the Cave which shows the theme of Alice In Wonderland , that reality is not always what it seems and the concept of choices.
One of the major differences between the film and the novel is the depiction of the delusional image of reality. However, it still manages to bring forth the dystopian image of both their Utopian societies. In The Truman Show, life is a real life play in an environment that provides comfortable lifestyle and happiness at the cost of reality. The producer of The Truman Show, Christof states, “We accept the reality of the world with which we are presented”. This message is the underlying theme in the story and as such, will foreshadow Truman’s acceptance of a delusional reality in the film. Meanwhile, in the film everyone except for Truman is acting and not living an authentic life. There is no sense of “real”; no real affinity, no secrecy, and no faith, all of which Truman is blindly unawar...
The Allegory of the Cave and Oedipus the King are two very different stories. The Allegory of the Cave is about a single prisoner who is lead out of a cave he had been in since his childhood and sees the true light of day. Oedipus the King is about a man who wants to find the murderer in his city and all the secrets of his past come to light and lead to a tragic end. Hmm…maybe when you really think about it The Allegory of the Cave and Oedipus the King really are kind of similar. Along with comparisons, there are contrasts with these two stories.
