Tragedy That Shook The World
The Holocaust Vs. The Trail of Tears
the Holocaust was one of the most devastating things to happen in history today and people still talk about it, but the Trail of Tears was also as devastating as the Holocaust. Also the Holocaust was run by a Dictator by the name of Hitler, and the Trail of Tears was run by Andrew Jackson. The Holocaust lasted for so long and a lot of innocent people suffered for that long under the hands of Hitler, they were thrown in concentration camps, gas chambers, etc. the Trail of Tears only lasted a year which is not that long compared to how long The Holocaust lasted which was 12 years, The Cherokees were the ones that suffered during the Trail of Tears. Hitler killed a lot of people

not only during the Holocaust but at any time. Both of these genocides have huge ripple effects throughout history and the world and they’re still talked about to this day. Although they happened a couple miles away and a couple years apart, the Holocaust and the Trail of Tears Genocide were both the results of power-hungry dictators seeking to control a much weaker population. Therefore there are a lot of reasons why These started but here are a few, The Holocaust one reason is because they hated jews and their race and religion, another reason is Hitler just wanted to blame the jews for the Great depression following WWII. Also the Trail of Tears one reason is Andrew Jackson wanted to remove the indians by paying them $5 Million dollars to leave and abandon their family’s, but they declined and then they removed them by force. Actually the Holocaust started on January 30, 1933, and ended 12 years later on May 8, 1945. Mainly the Trail of Tears only lasted a year from 1838 to 1839. The Holocaust took place in Europe, but mostly germany, Poland, and Austria. The Trail of Tears mostly took place in the Mississippi river, and sometimes oklahoma. Even though The Trail of Tears was only a year long, it was still a really sad year for the Cherokees, “The cherokees walked a total of 2,200 miles which is about (3,500 km)” (Bowman, 2), the trail ran through nine states and included land and water paths. The things that happened during these genocides were terrible, because about 4,000 Cherokees died of disease, famine, and warfare. What’s really interesting is that the Trail of Tears happened, during the Holocaust which was a lot harder on the cherokees, because they could get caught, and tortured, and killed. The numbers of Jews murdered in the holocaust is huge, there were an estimated death of 5 to 6 million Jews. The Holocaust lasted a while but Both the Jews and the Cherokees suffered horrific fates at the hand of brutal, sadistic killers.
There’s a lot of things that people lost during these genocides, some were life threatening. A lot of people were affected by these genocides, these were some of them. the Holocaust consists of the Jew, mentally/physically handicapped, and dissenters. The people who were in danger during the Trail of Tears Were the Cherokees. The people who were lead the Holocaust were Adolf Hitler, the Nazi’s, and the SS/Gestapo. Also The person who was leader of the Trail of Tears was, Andrew Jackson. Hitler despised the jews so much, that they were his central point of attack, and he didn’t care that he murdered that many innocent people, nothing else meant anything to him except for the Jews and how much he wanted to get rid of them, Hitler was the main leader of the Holocaust while the Nazi’s worked under him, and Andrew Jakson was the main leader of the Trail of Tears, and his troop’s worked under him. Hitler also targeted the handicapped, the reason why is he knew that they were I mobile so he messed with that by also killing people who were handicapped. Then Andrew Jackson went after the Cherokees because they had nothing so he thought if he bribes them to move and abandon their family for 5 million dollars then he was wrong. They refused so him and his troops forced them out of theirs homes by burning them to the ground and killing their family’s, only a few survived. Also many cherokees died tragically walking the trail because of starvation, dehydration, and their legs gave out. After that he made them walk along a long trail known as The Trail of
Tears. The Jews and the Cherokees both had to face the devastation of not only losing their rights and homes, but losing their life as well, although the modes and methods for these losses were strikingly different. The Holocaust killed a lot of people whether it be Gas Chamber, or just killing them, but also people lost a lot of things they loved like. They lost their rights it’s called the (Nuremberg Laws), The Jews lost their homes where they live like (Ghetto’s), They also most importantly lost their life. In the Trail of Tears they lost almost the same thing’s like. They lost their (camps/homes), “They lost their land where they grew crops such as cotton, and food for them to survive” (Rolo, 3). However the Jews had somewhat rules they had to follow but if they didn’t they got killed, “They couldn’t marry, they lost their business, and they couldn't move anywhere” (Rolo, 3). Their homes were looted, they were forced to march or to board trains, and convoys to get to concentration camps. They were also lured into getting into gas chambers because the nazi’s told them it was safe then when they were in there they shut the door behind them and killed them slowly with the gas, they were also murdered by the SS. The Trail of Tears however the Cherokees, lost their homes/villages/camps/etc. And also their own family’s were taken from them, so just imagine a 5 year old being taken away from their mom or dad. Of course they lost their, crops, food, cotton, etc. It was definitely a hard time for them as well as the Jews. These Genocide’s have some stuff in common but the most common thing is they’re both terrible. One difference between the Holocaust and The Trail of Tears is, the holocaust happened between 1933 and 1945, when “The Trail of Tears took place only one year from 1939 to 1940” (Boggs, 1). Some more similarities are that they both took people from their homes, they both hated the other people and treated them like animals, Jews/Cherokees. They both discriminated them because of their race. These genocide’s caused huge ripple effects through history and studying these genocide's can be good to learn because they give information of past events that were devastating and sometimes it’s good to learn at least some sort of history this is a good start to research about genocide’s or anything else. All the pain and suffering these people had to go through for a long time, and let us just be happy for where we are now and that we have a family, and can have friends, and a house, and food, and everything else in our life. Be thankful for what you got, Because the people who led those genocide’s whether it be Hitler, or Andrew Jackson, they are bad people for what they have done, The Holocaust and The Trail of Tears still people today.
There are many similarities between the German Holocaust and the genocide of the Native Americans but there is many differences. In 1838 Andrew Jackson proposed the indian removal act to remove the Native Americans and put them into reservations. In 1933 Adolf Hitler called for all jews to be put in “ghettos” or slums. The jews were then put into concentration camps and many died before even getting there. During the “Trail Of Tears” over four thousand Cherokee Indians died while going to the reservations. During the German Holocaust over six million Jewish people were killed at the concentration camps. According to the www.USHMM.org “ The Germans and their collaborators killed nearly two out of every three European Jews as part of the
The Trail of Tears was one of the examples of when America treated Native Americans terrible. This event was absolutely terrible. We forced the Indians to walk to the West because white settlers wanted to grow more cotton. There was actually a law that let America remove all indians to the West, so that they can get more land to grow cotton. Now this wasn’t just a normal peaceful walk. These people were dying of starvation, most of them wasn’t able to keep their belongings, and there was many sicknesses. This 1,200 mile walk led to over 5,000 Cherokees dying.
To begin with, The trail of tears and the holocaust genocides happened for very different reasons. The Holocaust happened over hatred of Jews because of race and religion. Hitler wanted to
Millions upon millions of people were killed in the holocaust, that is just one of many genocides. There are many similarities between different genocides. Throughout history, many aggressors have started and attempted genocides and violence on the basis of someone being the "other".
The purpose of this essay is to compare and contrast the American Slavery and the Holocaust, in terms of which one was more malevolent than the other. Research indicates that “the “competition” between African-American and Jews has served to trivialize the malevolence which both has suffered” (Newton, 1999). According to L. Thomas “A separate issue that contributes to the tension between blacks and Jews refer to to the role that Jews played in the American Slave trade.”
When people hear genocide they normally think of the Holocaust which was the persecution of Jews by the Nazi’s. This took place under Adolf Hitler’s rule but there have been other genocides throughout history. The Armenian Genocide is one of the many that have taken place. It took place in the Ottoman Empire between the years of 1914 to 1918 (“Armenian” Armenian). It started when the “Young Turks” took control of the government (Beecroft). The Holocaust and Armenian genocide are similar in the reasons that started them, but they are different in who was involved and how the two genocides were executed.
The United Nations was formed on October 24, 1945, after the Holocaust, to prevent genocide from ever happening again. A cartoon depicted by Michael Sutherland illustrated the unsuccessful intent of the United Nations. The United Nations is pictured standing over many graves of countries and groups that have suffered from genocide. However, many genocides have taken place since the formation of the United Nations (i.e. the Bosnian genocide). Both genocides began as simple misconception or dislike between peoples but ended in tragic and unnecessary murder. The Holocaust and the Bosnian genocide had many similarities and differences in their course of events. Unfortunately, genocides like the Jewish Holocaust and the Bosnian genocide still continue to happen today.
The word “genocide” is a general term. It is vague and could be used to group together and refer to a number of very unique events in history. Defined as the systematic murder of a specific group of people, genocides have occurred since ancient times. America’s most famous genocide, and the longest genocide in history, was the Native American Genocide. Considered to have begun the day the Mayflower hit the shore of Massachusetts, and ended in 1924 when the Indian Citizenship Act was past, the Native American Genocide lasted for over four centuries. In the 15th century, over 10 million Native Americans lived on the land that is part of the modern day United States. By 1900, that number was a mere 300,000. Most Americans, however, hardly know
“Quantie’s weak body shuddered from a blast of cold wind. Still, the proud wife of the Cherokee chief John Ross wrapped a woolen blanket around her shoulders and grabbed the reins.” Leading the final group of Cherokee Indians from their home lands, Chief John Ross thought of an old story that was told by the chiefs before him, of a place where the earth and sky met in the west, this was the place where death awaits. He could not help but fear that this place of death was where his beloved people were being taken after years of persecution and injustice at the hands of white Americans, the proud Indian people were being forced to vacate their lands, leaving behind their homes, businesses and almost everything they owned while traveling to an unknown place and an uncertain future. The Cherokee Indians suffered terrible indignities, sickness and death while being removed to the Indian territories west of the Mississippi, even though they maintained their culture and traditions, rebuilt their numbers and improved their living conditions by developing their own government, economy and social structure, they were never able to return to their previous greatness or escape the injustices of the American people.
The trail of tears was a hideous harsh horrible time that the Native Americans will not forget the 1830s about 100,000 Native Americans peacefully lived on 1,000,000 and 1,000,000 of akers. They have been on this land generations before the wight men arrived. There was gold found in Gorga and the land was for ital. They used huge cotton plantations because the people would get rich off of them. In 1830 Andrew Jackson privily sinned the removal act. Te removal act gave the Government the power to trade the land for the land that the Native Americans were on. The Native Americans did not want to move, but the precedent sent troops to force the removal. Solders who looted there homes traveled 15,000 Cherokees, and gunpoint marched over 12,000
Along the way 4,000 Indians died because of the harsh terrane and the cruelty of the soldiers and many of them are buried in unmarked graves along the trail of tears. The trail of tears has been Know according to a white Georgian the “Cruelest work I ever knew”(Tindall pg 343).A few Cherokees Indians hide in the mountains and became knew as the Eastern Band of Cherokees. Later the Creeks and the Chickasaws went back to try to take back control of their lands. During the trail of tears nearly 100,000 Indians were forced to relocate to the west. The government during that time sold about 100 million acres of Native American lands, and most of the land was prime cotton growing
In history classes, students are briefly taught about the Trail of Tears and many never think of it again. This historic event is an attempt at the eradication of a race of people just like the Holocaust but history is written by the victors therefore the awful treatment of the Native Americans is summed up with two words, "Manifest Destiny." An incredible amount of Indian history was lost along the Trail of Tears where over 5,000 Cherokees died or went missing, almost nothing was kept on record and almost everything was word of mouth (History.com). The rare books and manuscripts that do remain are safely preserved in museums and special libraries like the ones here at the University of Georgia where everyone is granted access to the material
The Trail of Tears was a hard battled journey for the Cherokee Nation. The Cherokee were driven to move west. They had to compromise and sign treaties, which drove them out of their land by the U.S. government. This was unfair to the Cherokees; the white settlers wanted the land for gold. Trail of tears is historically monumental because it shows the U.S. government cruelty to the Native Americans. It was unfair rights because they basically stole Cherokees land to satisfy their hunger for gold.
“Our nation was born in genocide when it embraced the doctrine that the original American, the Indian, was an inferior race.” - Martin Luther King Jr. The Trail of Tears is a historical title given to an event that happened in 1838.In this event, the Cherokee community of Native Americans was forced by the USA government to move from their native home in the Southern part of the contemporary America to what is known as the Indian territories of Oklahoma. While some travelled by water, most of them travelled by land. The Cherokees took 6 months to complete an 800 mile distance to their destination.
I walked into the room on New Year’s Day and felt a sudden twinge of fear. My eyes already hurt from the tears I had shed and those tears would not stop even then the last viewing before we had to leave. She lay quietly on the bed with her face as void of emotion as a sheet of paper without the writing. Slowly, I approached the cold lifeless form that was once my mother and gave her a goodbye kiss.
