The word “genocide” is a general term. It is vague and could be used to group together and refer to a number of very unique events in history. Defined as the systematic murder of a specific group of people, genocides have occurred since ancient times. America’s most famous genocide, and the longest genocide in history, was the Native American Genocide. Considered to have begun the day the Mayflower hit the shore of Massachusetts, and ended in 1924 when the Indian Citizenship Act was past, the Native American Genocide lasted for over four centuries. In the 15th century, over 10 million Native Americans lived on the land that is part of the modern day United States. By 1900, that number was a mere 300,000. Most Americans, however, hardly know …show more content…
However, creating a scale of genocides like this with the Holocaust at the top undermines the severity of all other genocides. Some historians have used the term “America’s Holocaust” for the Native American Genocide, but this indirectly invalidates it by inferring that it has to be comparable to the Holocaust to be a legitimate genocide. By considering it the Holocaust of America, it disregards the differences between the two genocides and indirectly erases the Native American Genocide from history. Although equivalent in magnitude and destruction, characterizing the Native American Genocide as “America’s Holocaust” is historically inaccurate and disrespectful. Considered the longest genocide in history, the Native American Genocide lasted for several centuries. Some historians consider the day the Mayflower hit the shore of Massachusetts to be the beginning of it. It ended in 1924 with the Indian Citizenship Act, but it reached its height in the 17th century, mainly when westward expansion had started and the amount of settlers traveling west was quickly growing. (United to End Genocide) Several million Natives had already been wiped out by early settlers, giving them smallpox-infected blankets and letting the disease spread
“Settler colonialism and the elimination of the native” by Patrick Wolfe In this reading the author argues that genocide and the elimination of the American Native population through colonial settlement are inextricably linked, though are not always the same. Also, during the presidency of Andrew Jackson, Indian tribes located in the Southeast United States were forcibly removed from their homes and ordered to relocate to the
There are many similarities between the German Holocaust and the genocide of the Native Americans but there is many differences. In 1838 Andrew Jackson proposed the indian removal act to remove the Native Americans and put them into reservations. In 1933 Adolf Hitler called for all jews to be put in “ghettos” or slums. The jews were then put into concentration camps and many died before even getting there. During the “Trail Of Tears” over four thousand Cherokee Indians died while going to the reservations. During the German Holocaust over six million Jewish people were killed at the concentration camps. According to the www.USHMM.org “ The Germans and their collaborators killed nearly two out of every three European Jews as part of the
The purpose of this essay is to compare and contrast the American Slavery and the Holocaust, in terms of which one was more malevolent than the other. Research indicates that “the “competition” between African-American and Jews has served to trivialize the malevolence which both has suffered” (Newton, 1999). According to L. Thomas “A separate issue that contributes to the tension between blacks and Jews refer to to the role that Jews played in the American Slave trade.”
Genocide is the act of killing a lot of people depending on their race, ethnicity, and religion. There are 8 stages of genocide which include extermination and denial. The victims of the Bosnian genocide consists of elders, women, men, children, and even babies. The Bosnian genocide is a war between Bosnian Serbians and Bosnian Muslim to which republic can control Bosnia. Many Serbains deny the fact that his genocide even happened even though there is scientific proof that this genocide happened. The purpose of learning genocide is so we are informed and we won't let it happen again.
When people hear genocide they normally think of the Holocaust which was the persecution of Jews by the Nazi’s. This took place under Adolf Hitler’s rule but there have been other genocides throughout history. The Armenian Genocide is one of the many that have taken place. It took place in the Ottoman Empire between the years of 1914 to 1918 (“Armenian” Armenian). It started when the “Young Turks” took control of the government (Beecroft). The Holocaust and Armenian genocide are similar in the reasons that started them, but they are different in who was involved and how the two genocides were executed.
The label of “genocide” can be an indefinite term, much like a binary model of examination, where discrepancies are not simply viewed as right or wrong, but rather with multidirectional perspectives. With respect to the atrocities the Native Americans endured, it is important to determine how to label the events based on the formal definition of Raphael Lemkin’s genocide which, in short, is defined as the intent to kill or destroy a specific group of people based on race, ethnicity or religious affiliations (Convention). I strongly assert that it is essential to define the Native American case study initially as genocide. With such a strong label, most will gravitate towards it and express more interest. However, that attention is more than
They are different because during the holocaust there were camps made to kill Jews, while Native Americans died on the way to a new home. During the Indian Removal Act, Native Americans were moved to a new town. The Nazis brought the Jews to concentration camps like, Auschwitz, where they were killed. In both of these events people were killed, but most Native Americans died when they were going west from diseases. The Jews were told it was resettlement or they were just forced to leave, then they were brought to concentration camps and killed. This shows how the incidents are different because they were carried out in different ways.
Imagination is the action of creating new ideas, scenarios, or concepts that are not present. It is the ability to form a mental image of anything that is not perceived through senses. It’s the ability of the mind to build mental scenes, objects or events that do not exist or are not there or have never happened. “...the pleasures of the imagination exist because they hijack mental system that have evolved for real world pleasure. We enjoy imaginative experiences because at some level we don’t distinguish them from real ones.” (pg.577 parg 4, Bloom)
The atomic bombings of Japanese cities and the genocides of the Holocaust are horrific events in human history. Although these events have their differences, they influence the world greatly today because they differ from each other to provide comparisons for history, have significance because of the survivors who tell their personal story, and achieve significance morally as well as immorally.
Genocide refers to the killing of large groups of people, especially among ethnic groups. Throughout the book, Stannard refers to genocide as a holocaust because throughout the history of the United States many ethnic groups were being killed and mistreated. A holocaust is described as a destruction caused by fire and nuclear war. In this case, the American holocaust occurred when Christopher Columbus and many Europeans began to kill Indians because their objective was to take the power of gold. According to Howard Zinn, author of the book “A people’s History of the United States” many Arawak men, children, and women were put on ships and were forced into labor. The Arawak began to form an army and defeat the Spaniards. In his book, Zinn describes the poor treatment that the Arawak were facing. Zinn states that “When it became clear that there was no gold left, the Indians were taken as slave labor” (Zinn Chapter 1). The Europeans, Spanish, French, British, and Americans each committed genocide by killing and mistreating the Indians who formed part of the land. Stannard describes what each group treated this minority group and why it was considered genocide. In his book, Stannard quotes Bartolome de las Casas who talks about the treatment. De las Casas says
History aims to examine the actions and legacy of mankind. The past is filled with the achievements that humans have reached, however, history also shows us the evil that man is capable of. No atrocity against mankind is more heinous than the act of genocide. Genocide is the aim to destroy all (or part of) of a racial, religious, ethnic, or national group of people. This paper will examine two famous cases of genocide in history: The holocaust of Jews and other groups in Nazi Germany, and the destruction of the Congolese people under Belgian colonialism. The Holocaust remains as one of the main legacies of Hitler and the Nazi party, who claimed an estimated 11 million victims, 6 million of which were Jews. Comparatively, the Congolese Genocide
Native Americans have endured the lengthiest form of genocide in modern history. While it is not this paper’s purpose to explore the traumas experienced by Native Americans via colonization and more modern policies which perpetuate Native American trauma, it is important to understand that those experiences have direct impact on these communities. Yellow Horse-Brave Heart (1999) reports that the Historical Trauma Response, which is a collection of symptoms that result in members of a group that have experienced trauma, reveals negative health outcomes that include: Increased suicide rates, mental health disorders, somatic complaints without medical merit, and obsession on trauma, guilt, and grief. Poupart (2003) explains that as First Nations
Did you know there are seven species of sea turtle in the world? Four of which make home on the Salvadoran coast. Throughout my 19 years of living I have encountered a handful of learning experiences. The most significant was when I went to visit my parent's motherland, El Salvador. For those who don't know El Salvador is a small, in fact, the smallest country in Central America. My experience there changed my perspective about life. El Salvador is filled with gang violence and poverty. Making it one of the most dangerous countries in the world. Yet, is also filled with amazing views, delicious foods and beautiful people. In my visit I witnessed how hard the people work for how little they get paid, the struggle of living there, and how little you need to be happy.
Genocide is the deliberate killing of a large group of people, especially those of an ethnic group or nation. Many people think that America never would do anything as atrocious as genocide, but there must be a reason the United States has so many laws about discriminating other races. The trail of tears is America’s own genocide. Also, the concentration camps that Japanese and Japanese- American people occupied during World War 2 were starkly like the Ghettos in Germany. Our most recent president Donald Trump has even started in on the first stage of genocide in present day America with the wall that he wants to build to further separate the American people from another race.
...eath of tens of thousands was smallpox. Columbus returned from England on his second voyage to the islands that he had found with the disease known as smallpox. The Spanish would use the smallpox disease as a weapon in some cases. They would take a piece of clothing from someone who was or had been sick with the smallpox disease and give to one of the natives. When that native brought it back to his/her village. It would infect the entire village, effectively using that one piece of clothing as a bio-weapon. When we think of holocaust we usually think of what the Germans did to the Israelis. But in reality, what Columbus did the Indians was much more horrible. Columbus killed over eight-million people, many more than what Hitler did. This was caused by to things the greed for gold and the disregard for human life. Thankfully today we live in a better world than that.
