From 1830 to 1950 railroads were being developed and network was expanding. During 1830 and 1840 railroad lines increased from 23 to 2,808 miles and more than 6,200 miles had been completed and opened within the next ten years. By 1850 the total network was increased to 9,021 miles. Although other states were developing the Atlanta and Seaboard states obtained the most growth. A trip could take a few days if one was coming from Boston and going to Chicago on a lake steamer, stagecoach, or by rail. Population in the United States was doubled within the first twenty years of railway development. Between 1850 and 1860 railway expansion increased the most. this decade railway development was beginning in the west of the Mississippi River and the Iron Horse was headed towards the Missouri river by 1860. Railway development was stopped temporarily due to a war between the states. Once the railway development started back up the nation’s network expanded in 1860 to 30,626 miles and in 1870 to 52,922 miles. The first railroad to the Pacific Ocean was the most significant because we were able to travel across the country. Another remarkable development was in the Missouri and Mississippi valleys. By 1880 40,000 miles were built increasing the network to 93,267 miles making every state have railway transportation. Immigration, agricultural, and industrial growth was influenced in 1880. From 1860 to 1890 population increased in the Mississippi river.
Farmers began to cultivate vast areas of needed crops such as wheat, cotton, and even corn. Document D shows a picture of The Wheat Harvest in 1880, with men on earlier tractors and over 20-30 horses pulling the tractor along the long and wide fields of wheat. As farmers started to accumilate their goods, they needed to be able to transfer the goods across states, maybe from Illinios to Kansas, or Cheyenne to Ohmaha. Some farmers chose to use cattle trails to transport their goods. Document B demonstrates a good mapping of the major railroads in 1870 and 1890. Although cattle trails weren't used in 1890, this document shows the existent of several cattle trails leading into Chyenne, San Antonio, Kansas City and other towns nearby the named ones in 1870. So, farmers began to transport their goods by railroads, which were publically used in Germany by 1550 and migrated to the United States with the help of Colonel John Stevens in 1826. In 1890, railroads expanded not only from California, Nebraska, Utah, Wyoming and Nevada, but up along to Washington, Montana, Michigan, down to New Mexico and Arizona as well. Eastern States such as New Jersey, Tennesse, Virginia and many others were filled with existing railroads prior to 1870, as Colonel John Stevens started out his railroad revolutionzing movement in New Jersey in 1815.
During the 1880's and 1890's, the United States focused on broadening their territory and expanding their country westward. During the early part of the decade, a vast amount of land was disappearing due to the fact that millions of people were moving west looking for gold mines and new farmland. The government was encouraging this move to happen in such ways as the Homestead Act of 1862 that gave 160-acre plots of land to settlers for an extremely low price. As people moved in that direction, more towns were built, leading to the need for railroads that spanned across the country. The very last spike of the transcontinental railroad was driven in during 1869, paving the way for easier travels across the country. There was a huge increase in commercial farming, which led to a market boom. This market increase caused an international market that was filled with competition. This international trading between a select few different nations was about the extent of the United States' foreign relations in the 1880's.

The Transcontinental railroad could be defined as the most monumental change in America in the 19th century. The railroad played a significant role in westward expansion and on the growth and development of the American economy (Gillon p.653). However, the construction of the transcontinental railroad may not have occurred if not for the generous support of the federal government. The federal government provided land grants and financial subsidies to railroad companies to ensure the construction. The transcontinental railroad contributed to the formation of industry and the market economy in America and forever altered the American lifestyle.
