‘The Secret Life of Walter Mitty’ is about a boring man who has a lot of daydreams. It was originally a short story, but was also made into a movie. The way that the story is presented in both is a key factor in either’s success, and when compared the two are very different. For example, in the short story, Walter has little to no character development, but in the movie, nearly the entire production is him being put through a lot of situations that let us see more of the true character of Walter Mitty. This example and others is what makes the movie adaptation of “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” better than that of the short story. In the short story the theme isn’t understandable, and is barely even there at all. If there is, it doesn’t really seem to be some that makes sense as it wouldn’t really be a lesson, more as common sense. The theme of the movie is hinted at and shown multiple times throughout, but this is not the case in the short story. The theme of the movie came across as a “Don’t be scared of your true potential” or “Don’t let your life be eventless” kind of idea, but the only idea that could be brought by anyone out of the short story was, “Daydreams can be more dangerous than primarily thought” which is almost comedic when compared to the serious overall theme of the movie. The way that the movie presented the theme was also kind of interesting, and is also a reason that many would think it was the quote that showed up several times in the film, “To see the world, things dangerous to come to, to see behind walls, draw closer, to find each other, and to feel. That is the purpose of life.” It just doesn’t seem to make a good story when the theme is hard to understand, or the story doesn’t come together
