The Masque of the Red Death" and "Nothing in the Dark" appear very different at first but a closer look reveals the two stories actually have very similar plots, characters, and settings. In the short story "The Masquerade Of The Red Mask" Prince Prospero was the protagonist he is described as " a bold and robust man." (Poe,3) During Prince Prospero's time there was a very ill plague going around killing people so for the few thousand that did survive Prince Prospero ended up throwing a little masquerade ball everyone came dressed up in costumes and mask. The masquerade is a little party for everyone that survived the plague they wanted to be happy and celebrate that they are still alive Prince Prospero welded the castle gates close so that …show more content…
way nobody would be able to get in or out of the castle everyone was trapped inside. During the masquerade a figure appears out of the mist with the masque of The Red Death Prince Prospero demands that the figure unmask himself and that he be hung at sunrise.

walls. In the short film "Nothing In The Dark" the old woman Wanda Dunn was scared of death the same way Prince Prospero was when the story first began both characters from the story feared death but Wanda Dunn knew that Death would come in a figure as a human and he tried many times to get to Wanda but she just didn't want to die. Wanda Dunn wasn't stupid she knew Mr.
Death would be coming for her anytime so she locked herself away in her little apartment and never went out she didn't go out to get groceries or anything she said that she had seen Mr. Death plenty of times while she was out and she would never forget his face she remembered every time someone came to her door she thought that it would be Mr. Death and most of the time she was right because she could remember what he looked like. Wanda never went out for food or anything she said in the short film that if she needed groceries a young boy would come by and pick the list up from outside and leave the groceries outside and she would leave the money outside for him to grab and leave. Wanda knew what death looked like but she wasn't scared to die she was scared of what death would feel like while she was being taken away. Wanda's fear was Death in the short story Prince Prospero was the same way he thought that he could escape death but everybody knows that their day will
come. Wanda has pretty much trapped herself inside her apartment to avoid Mr. Death but while doing that she is also avoiding life and doesn't communicate with the outside world at all Wanda doesn't want her life to end so she locks herself away and she tells you in the screen play that she has locked herself away for years. When Wanda steps outside to help the so called police she is surprised that she is still alive and she can't believe it Wanda was amazed that she made it outside she was afraid to get her life taken away. Wanda gets confronted by the city contractor about taking the building down because it is very old and could fall at any moment but Wanda looks at the police officer and tries to get him to explain her reasoning to the contractor. When the contractor leaves Wanda asks the police man why didn't he say anything to the contractor and then the so called police man tells Wanda to look in the mirror and then Wanda notices that nobody can see him because it is really Mr. Death. Mr. Death tricked Wanda into letting him in and it was all because he had to find a way to gain her trust Wanda acts so surprised when she knew that she couldn't live forever and that it was her time to go. In the screen play and the short story they are both the same they are just a little different they have different characters and different settings when you look closer into the short story and screen play you will see that they have their similarities and their differences they could both be close to identical because both characters thought of a way to be able to avoid death. Everybody knows that you can't escape death when it is your time then its your time to go everybody has their own calling and when it happens you would never know when it is coming.
Similarly, in “The Masque of the Red Death”, Prince Prospero is confident he can cheat death, but he is in disbelief when a masque figure resembling the Red Death shows up to his masquerade ball in his protected castellated abbey. “The mummer had gone so far as to assume the type of the Red Death. His venture was dabbled in blood and his broad brow, with all the features of the face, was besprinkled with the scarlet horror” (518). Prince Prospero angered attempts to defeat the masked figure, but “there was a sharp cry and the dagger dropped gleaming upon the sable carpet, upon which, instantly afterward, fell prostrate in death the Prince Prospero” (519). After Prince Prospero’s death, “was acknowledged the presence of the Red Death. He had come like a thief in the night” (519). Comparably both Brown and Prince Prospero believed they could overpower the antagonist, which did not occur in either
He shows off his prosperity while ignoring the sick people of his land. Poe unmasked, “There were buffoons, there were improvisatori, there were ballet-dancers, there were musicians, there was Beauty, there was wine. All these and security were within. Without was the "Red Death."”(Poe 1). Prince Prospero shuns the Red Death without worries; he mistakenly believes his wealth will protect him from death itself. Unlike the Prince, Goodman Brown falsely assumes that his faith will protect him. The two characters rival in thought and inevitably both pay the price for
“The scarlet stains upon the body, and especially upon the face of the victim, caused terror in those watching the afflicted” (7). The story starts off with the prince getting away to a castle with his healthy friends. They were going to throw a masque party, and all was going well until the masker showed up. Everyone was scared including the knights. As the masker made its way from the blue room to the black room, nobody moved. The prince felt like it was his job to get up and take control. He entered the black room with the Masker and that’s when everyone heard a scream, the prince was dead. Eventually, all his friends dropped dead too. In “The Masque of the Red Death” the seven rooms represent the seven stages of life; infancy, childhood,
In “The Masque of the Red Death,” Edgar Allan Poe uses imagery, sensory detail and symbolism not only to build suspense, but also to convey the idea that an individual can not hide or run away from death which becomes closer as time passes on. Throughout the story Poe uses imagery details to create suspense in the story. For example when the author is describing the disease that has taken many lives he describes the unfortunate event as, “ Blood was its Avator and its seal- the redness and the horror of blood. One can understand that in the story the tragic death of someone might occur as tragically as the disease is described. Accordingly, as the story progresses the deep shade of the color red is evident in many areas to represent symbolism.
In the story “The Masque of the Red Death” the title slightly reveals the story. The story is about a fatal disease known as “The Red Death” and Prospero not caring about and dies. Poe writes this story in third person .Prince Prospero knew about the people dying from the disease but he paid it no attention. So one day Prospero decides to throw a masquerade ball. In the ball there are seven rooms. The seven rooms are different colors such as blue, purple, green, orange, white, violet, and black. While people are in enjoying the ball, midnight strikes and everyone silently fall to their deaths. Prospero see that everyone is dead and becomes frightened. Prospero runs in a rage and The Red Death catches him and Prospero dies.
Edgar Allan Poe was famous for his poems, short stories, motifs, themes, etc. After reading three of his most famous works: “The Pit and the Pendulum,” “The Raven,” and “The Masque of the Red Death,” I found that the “Masque of the Red Death” was my personal favorite. In this story, Edgar Allan Poe enthralled the reader with his entire concept, symbols, and the way he infused history into the interesting and haunting story.
The characters in “The Mask of the Red Death” include Prince Prospero (who is the only person that speaks in the story), a multitude (a thousand) of the Prince’s wealthy friends, and the masked figure, which doesn’t appear until the end of the story. Prince Prospero’s name signifies happiness and good-fortune. Ironically, this is not the tone of the story. The prince is an unusual man with strange tastes. “His plans were bold and fiery, and his conceptions glowed with barbaric luster". After half of his dominions were killed by the disease is...
Edgar Allen Poe, in the short story “The Masque of the Red Death”, shows how people may try to outsmart death and surpass it, but in the end they will die since death is inevitable. He reveals this in the book by showing all the people closed up in the abbey that belongs to Prince Prospero. They are trying to escape the “Red Death” and think that they can escape the death by hiding away in the abbey. They manage to stay safe for six months but in the end they all die after the stroke of midnight during the masquerade ball Prince Prospero puts on from the Red Death itself which appears after midnight and leaves no survivors in the end. Poe develops the theme of how no one can escape death through the use of the point of view, the setting, and symbolism.
In the short story “ The Masque of the Red Death,” Edgar Allen Poe uses symbolism to express ideas to develop his theme and characters. “ The Masque of the Red Death” tells a story of prince Prospero who locks his friends and himself in a castle to escape the Red Death, a deadly disease. Much to Prospero’s dismay, in the end, the deadly disease causes them to perish. Poe uses the dark room to reveal Prospero’s unusual character and reveal that death is always there and cannot be avoided.
The story continues as Prince Prospero (meaning happiness and prosperity) summoned a thousand of his worthy friends to join him in his home that was surrounded by high walls and iron gates, he reinforced the idea they all would be happy and secure inside while the “Red Death” destroyed the world outside those gates as they knew it.
The setting of “The Masque of the Red Death” is an invite only party the prince is having in his isolated abbey. The story says “When his dominions were half depopulated; he summoned to his presence a thousand hale and light- hearted friends from among the knights and dames of his court, and with these retired
In the story, “Masque of the Red Death” it covers six months during the Red Death. It takes place in a castle which has seven different colored rooms. In the beginning of the story it describes the main character prince Prospero as happy, fearless and wise. Towards the end of the story a new guest appears to the party and everyone is scared and Prospero goes from being happy to mad and in the end the new guest kills Prospero and everyone dies because he was the Red Death. The message in this analogy ,”The Masque of the Red Death “ by Poe is life passes by so quick that you don't realize what's going on until it's your time to die.
I chose to write about the comparison of two of Edgar Allan Poe’s stories. The two stories that I chose to write about are “The Masque of the Red Death” and “The Fall of the House of Usher”. Both of these stories create and have a gothic mood to them, which draws you in as a reader. The story of the masque of the red death is written about the black plague that was spreading across Europe at the time, and the story of the fall of the house of usher is written about a sickness or a disease that affects the characters of the story. In Edgar Allen Poe’s story of the “The Masque of the Red Death “, it is narrated by an unknown onlooker within the castle itself. In both stories with the narrator being an onlooker or as an unnamed friend as in “The fall of the House of Usher” forces or draws the reader to feel a part of the story itself. “The Masque of the Red Death” is about a prince who is rich that invites a thousand of his close knights and people of nobility to his castle where he has it sealed up to keep the plague from reaching his guest and his self. Edgar Allan Poe made the rooms of the castle in this story to be bazaar with all seven chambers of the castle different colors that went in one direction from east to west representing a life cycle. The last chamber was colored black with red stained windows that represented the final stage of life or death. The prince and his guest did not dare to enter this chamber because they feared death and were terrified of the idea of it (2012). In this story the prince and his guest think that they are safe and have a masque ball, while at the party they drink and are having a good time not thinking of the plague that is ravishing the country around them nor the poor that are being stric...
Edgar Allan Poe is known for his masterful writing on all aspects of mortality, but his famous short story “The Masque of the Red Death” proves to be more than a simple story about death. While it is about death, Poe’s short story can be read and applied as a cautionary tale whose purpose is to illustrate a worthy way to live and die by portraying the opposite of both. This interpretation comes about when the story is viewed through the lens of New Criticism. This viewpoint shows how the story uses its formal elements converge to create one complex theme. Poe’s short story develops its theme through the use of paradox, tension, irony and ambiguity, all of which come together to identify
