Have you ever tried to accomplish something and failed well there is a story of two people that accomplish something and one that didn't. There are many ways to compare and contrast the passages Wesley Harris and Jeffery . First of all Jeffery wasn't as determined as Wesley was because Jeffery gave up easy and even though Wesley was badly injured he still managed to escape and accomplished what he wanted to do. Unlike Wesley ,Jeffery just gave up and failed to accomplish what ever he wanted to do. That is why I know Wesley was more determined than Jeffery was. There are still more ways in which they are alike and different. Wesley Harris and Jeffery had many qualities that were similar and that were different. For the first thing both of them were slaves trying to accomplish something. Another thing they both have in common is that both of there plans didn't go the way they planed it would. Also both Wesley and Jeffery both were courageous and brave cause of what they did. Also in both passages they received help from someone. In the first passage Jeffery received help from his master and in the second passage Wesley received help …show more content…
In the first passage Jeffery's master really does help him unlike in the second passage. In the first passage something happened and at last Jeffery and Dorcas fail to accomplish what they wanted which was to get married and in the second passage Wesley accomplished what he wanted ,but not the way he wanted it. In the second passage Wesley was more determined to escape because eve though he was badly injured he still managed to escape by going down his window and into the woods. That shows how much more Wesley was determined to accomplish something then Jeffery. This another difference both of these passages have. In passage one the slaves were not trying to escape ,but in passage two they were trying to escape to the
The novel guides you through the 8 crazy years that led to Wes Moore 1's success and Wes Moore 2's life sentence in prison. Wes Moore 1 definitely did not have the perfect life but his life had more positives than Wes Moore 2. Wes's family, friends and the military impacted his decision making and life choices that make him successful today. But the more he tried to be like his brother, the more Tony pushed back.”
“The chilling truth is that his story could have been mine. The tragedy is that my story could have been his” (Moore, 2011). This quote perfectly describes the book The Other Wes Moore. This book was a story about two people who have the same name and grew up in similar environments, but had very different lives. The author of the book, Mr. Moore, became successful and was given the opportunity to receive “one of the most prestigious academic awards for students in the world” (Moore, 2011). On the other side of the spectrum, the other Wes Moore “will spend every day until his death behind bars for an armed robbery that left a police officer and a father of five dead” (Moore, 2011). Mr. Moore decided to contact the
Wes & Wes Moore could’ve of easily ended up with the same fate. It is the choices they made, the environment they were provided with, the support and choices of their families and the mind set they chose to have the set them apart from each other. The two Wes Moore’s paths went different ways for many reasons but some were more significant than others.
While reading the book The Other Wes Moore by Wes Moore, many readers come to find out why Wes states, “The chilling truth is that his story could have been mine. The tragedy is that my story could have been his.” (Moore Introduction). What Wes is saying here is that both Wes Moore have a very similar life; they shared the same name, they both lived in Baltimore with similar histories, yet they had two completely different lives. This is not to say that I agree with the statement, but rather disagree to an extent.
In life, multiple factors work together to influence the choices one makes, and these choices affect both one’s present and their future. In a narrative about two boys who share the same identity, their two seperate lives are compared to one another by the differences of their futures. Choice versus Fate is a theme in The Other Wes Moore that is developed throughout the plot to display how the two forces work together and against each other in the two characters’ lives, and to also emphasize the reality that at times, one’s fate is already pre-destined and the choices that one makes may not be impactful enough to change their destiny.
To be able to influence a positive or negative light in someone’s life is what means to be a role model. Both the author and convict were born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland. The two controversially named Wes Moore, were like each other until role models were introduced into their lives. There were many people that influence the author and convict to make their life choices. People like Captain T.Y Hilton, as a influence for the author and Tony for the convict. Role models and their capabilities to influence others actions are the reason that both Wes’ lives are different. I'll be explaining how these people influence their situations, starting by talking about the author role models first.
In “The Other Wes Moore”, by Wes Moore, the author takes the readers through his life growing up as well as the life of someone who was a stranger to him during his childhood but turned out to be a huge part of his life later on. His name was also Wes Moore and both he and the author grew up in poverty and did not have the best childhood. Although they grew up similarly, their adulthoods were the polar opposite. The author Wes Moore became the top in his class, a Rhodes scholar, and studied at Oxford University to later become very successful. On the other hand, the other Wes Moore is in prison for the rest of his life for a robbery and murder. How did these two grow up so similarly, yet had completely different adulthoods?
“I guess it’s hard sometimes to distinguish between second chances and last chances” (Moore 67). This is a powerfully central theme to the book The Other Wes Moore, written by Wes Moore. For the two men this book is about, it all begins with a wide-open future. The mothers that gave birth to them and the influences they had, along with their own powerful choices, sealed their fate . People don’t ever stop growing or improving and the two Wes Moore’s are no different. Throughout their lives, they are constantly changing and in some places calling the shots. One chose correctly, and one did not.
In the same way, both Wes Moore’s both regret in their childhood and through their adulthood about their mistake in their lives. This point is illustrated in the passage, “Try again. Fail again. Fail better.” (Quoted from Samuel Buckett)...“Failing does not make us a failure. But not trying to do better, to be better, does make us fools” (Moore 185). The explanation of quote point is the quote is to attempt till you succeed or never surrender. On the chance that you come up short once, attempt once more. On the chance that you fall flat second time, do it again. This disappointment again ought to be superior to the past disappointment. There ought to be some realizing and some change. They cannot make it in the first attempt. The (author) Wes Moore acknowledges and tries to enhance by taking a shot at the reasons of his
Education, environment and family factors can determined a person’s future life is success or failure. The other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates talks about two people with a same name and the environments they grew up were similar. However, the decisions they made let they ended up with a different life. The author Wes Moore became a successful political, and the other Wes Moore became a criminal in the end. The reason is the author Wes Moore made a correct choice to enrich his future life. The other Wes failed his life because he made a wrong choice. Overall, the author Wes Moore was more successful than the other Wes Moore because of the supporting family, and strong education.
Wes (the author) has a family who wants to see him succeed. Although Wes didn’t know his father for long, the two memories he had of him and the endless stories his mother would share with him, helped guide him through the right path. His mother, made one of the biggest effects in Wes’s life when she decided to send him to military story, after seeing he was going down the wrong path. Perhaps, the other Wes’s mother tried her best to make sure he grew up to be a good person, but unfortunately Wes never listen. His brother, Tony was a drug dealer who wish he could go back in time and make the right decisions and he wanted Wes to be different than him. He didn’t want his brother to end up like him and even after he tried everything to keep Wes away from drugs, nothing worked and he gave up. As you can see, both families are very different, Wes (the author) has a family who wants him to have a bright future. Most importantly, a family who responds fast because right after his mother saw him falling down the wrong hill she didn’t hesitate to do something about it. The other Wes isn’t as lucky, as I believe since his mother already had so much pressure over keeping her job and her son Tony being involved in drugs. Same thing with Tony, he was so caught up in his own business that no one payed so much attention to
Not taking action upon the chance that is given to one in a way defeats the purpose of why the chance was given to that person. Wes had wanted to have a fresh start. So he left Cheryl, and went over to a friend who had recommended the Job Corps, and soon after that, Wes went for an interview. It states, "Two weeks after his conversation with Levy, Wes stood in the parking lot on the corner of Saratoga and Greene streets, waiting for the bus that would take him to the Woodland Job Corps Center in Laurel" (Moore 140). This situation perfectly supports the quote that in which, it shows that the Other Wes Moore was given a chance to act on changing his life, and he did in fact do that. This proves that acting on a chance can lead one to success. One cannot lose anything in a situation similar to this, so acting upon it is very important. Therefore, act upon a chance that is given, it may lead one to extreme
Equiano way of slavery is differently than that of Jacobs. Equaino was taken from his homeland of Africa. He was apart of what is known as the Middle Passage which was considered a deadly voyage for many slaves that were apart of this voyage across the Atlantic. After his arrival, he experience the hard labor. Jacobs, who was born into slavery was already born in what was considered the "New America". Equiano way of telling his narratives was in more of a chronological way with vivid description of what he was being faced with everyday. Jacobs not only told what slavery was like for her, but also provide more emotion than that of Equiano. She gave stories of others like slave that was previously own by Dr. Flint and fathering of other slave 's children. Unlike Equiano, he was given his other name of Gustavus Vassa by his master, Jacobs wrote her narrative under the name of Linda Bendt and changed names of others in her narrative in order to protect the reputation of those . Although Equiano talks about what woman 's went through during slavery, it was Jacobs he gave more of an in-depth of it with dealing with lust from a master and only being known as the property of her master and her master only. Both authors expressed in their own way that once you fall into slavery, you lose sense of who you are and the morals you were brought up
Mark’s gospel and John’s gospel contain many differences from the beginning, but both end with Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection. The gospels of John and Mark represent Jesus as two different people. The disparity is that Mark represents Jesus as a servant while John portrays Jesus as a divine being. However, one must realize the two texts are meant to read by different audiences during different time periods. Each description presents a particular aspect of the life of Historical Jesus.
For example, these two passages were based around slavery and the main characters are both slaves. In the first passage, Jeffrey is known as chattel No. 319 which is a label given to a slave that is being sold. In the second passage, it states that Wesley Harris studied a note from the master that informed Mrs. Carroll about selling, and that Harris was going to escape the plantation. Next, they were both determined, brave risk takers. While Harris attempted to escape twice after being caught the first time, Jeffrey persuaded his master to buy Dorcas. As Jeffrey persuaded his master, he was also risking his life because this could have been considered back-talking to the master. Lastly, both of these stories have plot twists. In the love story, many readers could have potentially thought that Jeffrey and Dorcas would work for the same plantation owner, but, in the end, they get sold to different masters. There could also be a possibility that many readers thought that, when they read the story about escaping slavery, Wesley would have stopped striving for
