Knowing where knowledge comes from was a huge focus for philosophers. However many of the philosophers argue on the origin of knowledge. Some believe that it comes from the senses and some believe that it comes from reason alone. Others can be somewhere in between or have completely other ideas. However, it is most interesting to compare opposing views on where knowledge comes from. John Locke and Plato are two famous philosophers who have completely opposing of their views on where knowledge comes from, but they have reasons behind their opinions. He was a rationalist, which means he believed knowledge comes from reason alone, without any help from the senses. Plato tells a lot of stories about his cousin Socrates. Plato has a “two-world” theory that distinguishes between the objects of knowledge and the objects of opinion. These can also be known as the world of Forms and the world of Things. Plato shows this theory with imagery. There is a cave of senses, where the senses have a very limited view. He believes the people are prisoners of their senses and you can only receive minimal information from the senses alone. However by coming out of the cave, meaning using your senses, you have the ability to see more. There is a better grasp on reality with reason, and can see actual things for what they are instead of just shadows. According to Plato, ideas exist objectively, they exist on their own for us to discover. Discovery comes from reason, by forming ideas and thinking. Another way Plato shows reason as the main factor of knowledge is his theory of the form of the good. He compares the form of the good to the sun. The sun gives the ability of sight so you have the ability to see life much like how the form of the good gives the soul and mind the ability to know a form and gives the soul the power of knowing. The sun brings life like the form of good brings the being of forms. It is a cycle where all things are needing in order to work correctly. The source of knowledge is not a topic that is universally agreed upon. To rationalists, who usually have a sense of the divine, innate ideas give them cause to base knowledge in reason, being derived from ideas. To empiricists, who do not hold innate ideas to be valid, knowledge is unearthed through the senses, derived from observations. In “The Allegory of the Cave”, Plato argues that what we perceive of the world through our sense does not give us the entire picture of what is really there. He states that what we can see is only shadows of what is true, but since we are born believing what we see, we don’t know that there is anything missing at all. Plato believed that in the “knowable realm”, the form of the good, the ultimate truth, is the last thing that we can see, which requires more effort that simply perceiving it. Contradicting Hobbes, Locke maintained that the original state of nature was happy and characterized by reason and tolerance; all human beings were equal and free to pursue "life, health, liberty, and possessions." The state formed by the social contract was guided by the natural law, which guaranteed those inalienable rights. Plato, like Pythagoras, believes that knowledge of pure Forms and of “Being” is the direct path to someone living a life of salvation and of the highest quality. Plato, like Pythagoras, also believed that all of the forms are geometric figures and mathematical in nature. Also, Plato, like Heraclitus, believed that our world is constantly changing, or in a constant flux. Plato, also agreed with Parmenides, who believed that the real world is not the same as the world of our experience.

In order to define knowledge, Plato utilizes his dialogue Theaetetus, specifically a conversation had between Socrates and Theaetetus about knowledge, the divided line diagram, and the Allegory of the Cave. In the dialogue Theaetetus, Plato introduces the three definitions of knowledge as proposed by Theaetetus. He, Theaetetus, states at the prodding of Socrates that knowledge is perception [Aistheta ] or as expressed by Protagoras that “ man is the measure of all things”. Socrates rejects the first proposal stating that if man is the true measure of all things and his perception is infallible; thus making man the sole judge of what is right and wrong. If man is the sole judge, then there is no need for the teacher who claims that man is the measure of all things.

As he understands, what is an every lasting reality is a true knowledge, which is the heart of what needs to be understood and everything people need to know.
