School uniforms are something that have been around for centuries. According to the article by Michele Meleen, “History of Uniforms” the first uniform ever used was in 1222 in England. The students wore robe-like outfit called a “cappa clausa”. It was not until the sixteenth century that the uniforms were more modern and the students wore cloaks and stockings. As time went on uniforms were mainly used as a way of showing family economic status. If you attended a private school it showed that your family was wealthy because they could afford a better education then a public school. How will school uniforms affect the learning environment? Will it make it better or worse? Will the amount of bullying decrease in the school. Ever wonder what it would look like to have all students wearing the same white polo shirt, black pants, and a district sweater walking in the hallway? Nowadays, public school and many districts are discussing the possibilities of enforcing the uniform policy. In most places, many private schools already require students to have their mandatory uniforms; however, there are only a few public schools adopting this mandatory school-uniform polices as one of their enrollment requirements. The reason why not all public schools participated was because people believe that they are violating the freedom of choice when enforcing this mandatory uniform policy; yet problems such as bullying and segregation, emerged in these schools. Some people still think uniforms have no benefits at all. However, all public school students should be required to wear uniforms because it would improve the academic performance, reduce the violent behaviors based on appearance judgment, and provide less stress for both parents and students.

Uniforms are seen in almost every country in the world, but they are not really common in public schools in the United States. Some people think that wearing uniforms is a good idea while others oppose it. In my case, I had to wear uniforms at school when I started 1st grade up till my senior year in Vietnam. I found out that there are a lot of benefits for middle school and high school students when they are required to wear uniform at school in the United States.
It has been observed that the adoption of school uniform policies can promote school safety, improve discipline, and enhance the learning environment. The potential benefits of school uniforms include decreasing violence and theft. Some instances involving designer clothing and expensive sneakers have even led to life-threatening situations among students. Uniforms would also prevent gang members from wearing gang colors and insignia at school. Uniforms would also teach students discipline and help them resist peer pressure. Uniforms would also help students concentrate on their schoolwork and would help school officials detect intruders who come unwelcome into the school.
Many opposing views feel that uniforms are a “Band-Aid Approach” to more serious problems throughout the school community says Bárbara C. Cruz. Finding creative ways to express their individuality through other outlets other than fashion can help children forge friendships based on their common interests. In conclusion, I feel that school uniforms are something all schools should consider implementing in their policy. All of these points show that they could be budget-friendly, help children focus, and lower the barriers children can build up because of merely what they are wearing.
A major reason that schools should have uniforms is because students will get along better. They wouldn’t compare each other based on whose wearing what. Firstly, there tend to be fewer dress-code infractions to begin with when all students wear uniforms. Secondly, uniforms make it easier to enforce dress codes, because they create a single, set standard for all students. Many also argue the economic practicality of uniforms, as parents spend less money on trendy clothes. However, it must also be noted that uniforms themselves can be quite pricy, causing Americans spend an average of one billion dollars on school uniforms every year (Joe Mathews, L.A. Times,), and are paid for by either the students ' parents, or by taxpayers. Overall, uniforms may very well be more practical, but they come with a few of their own inconveniences as well.
All families already have other expenses to pay for such as bills, food, taxes, and they still have to buy regular clothes for their children to wear when they are out of school. Parents located in Anderson, Indiana, sued over a schools uniform policy because it broke the guarantee of a free public education. They said they were required to pay $641 for their children's uniforms in Aug. 2007 (Carol Motsinger, "Ironing out Policies on School Uniforms," usatoday.com, August 6, 2007) Most families probably cannot afford this expense on top of every other expense they have to pay at the same time. It should not have to be an expense for these families to worry about because it is technically imposing on the promise of free education.
School uniforms are a boiling conversation point these days. There are so many well-built points of view about what route parents, students, and superintendents wish to go in. It has been disputed that school uniforms have the potential to make a school safer, that uniforms reduce harassment or self-esteem issues, and that uniforms return the focus to the students' learning. I disagree. I, in fact think that school uniforms do not help make our schools a more secure place, I think that they do not revisit the center of attention to student's education - they just shifted where the attention was previous, and that they won’t help cut down on harassment or self- esteem issues in school.
School uniforms are affecting the amount of money spent on clothing in a negative way. Many people think parents/guardians are saving money, but really, they are just spending more money. If one were to think about it, school uniforms can’t be worn outside of school. Why would someone want to spend $300 on school uniforms, and then have to spend $200 on clothes worn outside of school?
Parents are also impacted when schools require uniforms. Some argue that this policy is too expensive; uniforms are actually more affordable. For example, an average parent of a teen that attends a public school spends over $500.00 a year on clothes alone, while a parent of a teen with a uniform policy spends less then $200.00 a year. There are fewer clothes to purchase, therefore less money to spend.
School Uniforms are a logical choice for the public school venue. Uniforms prevent students from a lower income background to be singled out for poorly made or cheap clothing, prevents use of gang colors, allows for certain safety measures, and allows teachers to form impressions of students based on actions and work rather than dress code choices.

Mitchell, UCLA School of Education says, "I think its great news for all of us who have advocated school uniforms as a way of building community.” A pressing issue, bullying has become a big problem in many school, and to eliminate this problem, school policies should require students to wear uniforms. Many people believe that school uniforms build the community into a safer, more positive environment. School uniforms improve school academics, prevent gang violence, and assist families, who can not afford expensive clothing.
School uniforms mean no hassle when choosing what to wear at school, often more affordable than fashion clothing and have much less get ready time in the morning. Which could be extended amount of time and effort with wealthier families. Uniforms also work great for making students feel equal and balanced.
