Many people have their own struggles in life, especially when it comes to wanting the best for their children. In “Mother and Daughter” by Gary Soto, the family of two have a struggle with money. In “Charles” by Shirley Jackson, the parents of a young boy are worried about the influences that are being exposed to their son at his elementary school. The authors both used dialogue and story descriptions to prove that parents want what’s best for their children. Gary Soto used dialogue throughout the story “Mother and Daughter” to show life may be a struggle at certain points in a lifetime, but eventually things will work out.
