Many people have their own struggles in life, especially when it comes to wanting the best for their children. In “Mother and Daughter” by Gary Soto, the family of two have a struggle with money. In “Charles” by Shirley Jackson, the parents of a young boy are worried about the influences that are being exposed to their son at his elementary school. The authors both used dialogue and story descriptions to prove that parents want what’s best for their children. Gary Soto used dialogue throughout the story “Mother and Daughter” to show life may be a struggle at certain points in a lifetime, but eventually things will work out. Although there isn’t much dialogue that runs through the story it still leads the reader to get the bigger picture and
meaning. When Yollie’s mother, Mrs. Moreno says, ‘You know, honey, we gotta figure a way to make money,’ it really brings out the theme of life having its struggle at certain points in time. According to the story, Mrs. Moreno has tried to find a job so that she could give her daughter an easy life, but the problem was no one would hire her. The story narrates, ‘No, they won’t hire us.’ This shows that life is a struggle for Yollie and her mother right now. On the other hand, dialogue was also used very well in Shirley Jackson’s story, “Charles.” Throughout the story, the dialogue is where most of the big picture is. The way the Shirley has decided to word the text, helps you observe the different feelings between each character, especially Laurie’s parents. ‘Can this be true, about Charles?” I asked my husband that night. “Can something like this happen?’ This shows part of the theme where parents want what’s best for their children. In this situation, Laurie’s mother feels uncomfortable about Charles and wants Laurie to have a positive influence on him rather than a negative influence. If Laurie’s mother didn’t want the best for him, she wouldn’t pay as much attention to a kid at his school the way she is right now. Throughout the story “Mother and Daughter” the author used story descriptions which really brought the theme out.
All through the times of the intense expectation, overwhelming sadness, and inspiring hope in this novel comes a feeling of relief in knowing that this family will make it through the wearisome times with triumph in their faces. The relationships that the mother shares with her children and parents are what save her from despair and ruin, and these relationships are the key to any and all families emerging from the depths of darkness into the fresh air of hope and happiness.

In the first few paragraphs, author attracts the attention of the reader and explains the main point of the article. The author begins the article saying that she “Pity[s] today’s parents who want to do the right thing.” The sentence attracts the audience to continue reading the article because the sentence sparks curiosity in why the author pities today’s parents. The article continues, “They [parents] buy child-rearing books, explore over psychology articles, play Mozart in nurseries festooned with alphabet cards and the periodic table.” Parker shows good persuasive technique by describing an exaggerated scenario of what parents are doing these days to try to develop their child’s mind.

In order to build a strong, grounded house a person must use brick and cement. A brick is used to build the house, but yet it is the cement that molds and keeps the house together and intact. A family encompasses the same basic rules and needs. The father is the provider for his family, sort of like the brick, but it is the mother who holds the responsibility of teaching right from wrong, and they are the ones who keep strong when everything else is going wrong. Now days there are many single-mother families and the father is non-existent. Therefore, a mother plays a very strong, dominant, and essential role in her family.
In his narrative, Justin Burnell recounts his memories of his biological father changing into to a woman. There are many ways the people in this story reacts but as a whole, in his recounts, they are almost the same. The heavy atmosphere in this story tells you how this story is going to go. The author does not give the year this takes place but just the location, in Knoxville, gives the reader insight on the hate that would be prominent.
Don, Libby, Chelsea, Cheryl and Jesse all had at least one parent that encouraged them to pursue a grander goal for a marvelous future; whereas David had no adult figure in his life that was willing to mentor him to take actions that was best for his future. For many of us growing up, our mothers have been a part of who we are. They have been there when our world was falling apart, when we fell ill to the flu, and most importantly, the one to love us when we needed it the most. In “Two Kinds” by Amy Tan, it begins with a brief introduction to one mother’s interpretation of the American Dream. Losing her family in China, she now hopes to recapture part of her loss through her daughter. However, the young girl, Ni Kan, mimics her mother’s dreams and ultimately rebels against them.
The author uses imagery, contrasting diction, tones, and symbols in the poem to show two very different sides of the parent-child relationship. The poem’s theme is that even though parents and teenagers may have their disagreements, there is still an underlying love that binds the family together and helps them bridge their gap that is between them.
In the story “Only Daughter”, Sandra Cisneros is the only daughter in a family of 6 children. Since she’s the only girl, she faced challenges in her transition from childhood to adulthood. She constantly had to prove that she would be outstanding in life or that she was on the right path. Eventually, she did achieve awesome accolades, but still fret her father’s response to it all. More pressure was put on her, she felt than her brothers. Her story is related to mine because our transition from childhood to adulthood was filled with life lessons and memories that didn’t flow like it should’ve.
Being a parent is a full time job that by no means is easy. It takes a lot to raise a child. Usually there are many sacrifices the parent makes so their child has a better life and parents try to raise them in the best manner possible. In two different novels The Family of Pascual Duarte by Camilo Cela and The House of Bernarda Alba by Frederico Lorca, readers are introduced to two mothers who are anything but great parents. However, Bernarda is a better mother than Pascual’s mother because she was only doing what she thought was best for her daughter’s whereas Pascual’s mother didn’t always act in the best interest of her children. Everyone has experience with parenting in some form or another. Whether this is as directly as being a parent yourself, observing the cultural norms of a family, or memories of the individuals that you think of as your own parents, we all have events in our past with parenting that have helped us become who we are today. Over the course of the semester while learning about all different types of theories, practices, cultures and concepts of parenting I cannot help but reflect on my own parents and experiences with them. This connection between subjects and events is critical not only to my learning process, but to my ability to apply this outside of the classroom. Understanding these concepts when they are in practice can help me as an educator
Many parents would agree that they want their children to be happy, honest, and respectful, but how can this be achieved in today’s world? “How do parents control the often uncontrollable? Perhaps by returning to the traditional values that they hope will provide a solid foundation” (Rodgers). Family values help to build a strong foundation that will support a family. This strong family foundation is what will support the family when trials come and when beliefs are challenged. The base that the family builds is what will bring them together when crises arise.
